NEW YORK, May 18 (UPI) -- Major League Baseball and Fox Sports said the start of this fall's World Series games would be moved up about 40 minutes.

Last year's World Series games, which featured two Eastern time zone teams, ended on average about midnight EDT, leading to a call for earlier start times, MLB.com reported.

Baseball Commissioner Bud Selig said World Series and American League Championship Series games on Fox would also begin earlier. Games that had begun about 8 p.m. EDT will have their first pitch scheduled for 7:30 p.m. EDT.

Plans for games televised on other networks weren't released.

"Our goal is to schedule games so the largest number of people can watch and Fox has gone to an enormous amount of effort to make this happen," Selig said. "It's been a great joint effort between the two us."

Fox Sports President Ed Goren said World Series games "have been running longer and we made the adjustments with the acknowledgment that young kids can only stay up until a certain hour."

The 2009 World Series is scheduled to begin Oct. 28.
