World's Greatest Draft (1 Viewer)

I know this is a late followup on the Joe Lewis pick, but I wanted to add that from most accounts Max Schmeling loathed how Hitler and the Nazis promoted him as a Teutonic golden boy and symbol of Nazism. He hated that he wasn't allowed to show his immense respect for Lewis as a fighter. Many have suspected this is why he lost so quickly in their second fight: not because he threw the fight, but because his heart wasn't 100% into it. He loved being a national hero, but hated all the racist superiority crap that people said about his victory. Some think he feared having to live through all that again.

It's a sad story, really.
Timschochet made a passing reference earlier in the thread about Kistallnacht, the night of broken glass. In a coordinated attack on Jewish people and their property, 91 Jews were murdered and 25,000 to 30,000 were arrested and deported to concentration camps. More than 200 synagogues were destroyed and thousands of homes and businesses were ransacked.Max Schmeling agreed to hide the two teenage sons of a Jewish friend of his, David Lewin, November 9-10, 1938 when Nazi pogroms against the Jews reached new heights. He kept the Lewin boys, Henry and Werner, in his apartment at the Excelsior Hotel in Berlin, leaving word at the desk that he was ill and no one was to visit him.

Later, when the rage of hate died down a little bit, did Schmeling help them flee the country to safety. They escaped and came to the United States where one of them, Henri Lewin, became a prominent hotel owner. This episode remained under shrouds until 1989, when Henry Lewin invited Schmeling to Las Vegas to thank him for saving his life.

Hitler never forgave Schmeling for refusing to join the Nazi party, so he had him drafted into the Paratroops and he was sent on dangerous missions. He survived the war and lived to be 99; IIRC he died 3-4 years ago.
:goodposting: Great story. Thanks for the response.

No game has the worldwide participation that soccer has. Not even close.Pele is the greatest player ever to play that game (in my opinion), but he is not a unanimous choice. There are 2 or 3 others who qualify for that title.Babe Ruth played on a limited stage. A one nation sport at the time, in fact, a regional sport, concentrated in cities in the northeast and midwest. Soccer players played on an international stage. There are other sports which have been truly international for decades.
like Cricket
Tennis down? Somewhat myopic, for an Aussie. :goodposting:

Of course Tennis is truly international, but is anyone clearly the best ever? There are probably good arguments for at least 4 men or 4 or 5 women.

sorry, didn't even realize I was up.

17.04, George Washington Carver, Inventor (but might be moved to WC later)

I'll write up more if needed. This isnt' a creative pick, but he was extremely influential through his work and research

Slow weekend. Here's my team entering the home stretch: Note to Tim, given the general lack of clarity over the Celebrity category, but with the majority opinion seeming to favor the modern conception, I'm going to formally move Elizabeth to a wild card spot.

Leader - Constantine

Military - Charles "The Hammer" Martel

Scientist - Alhazen, The first modern scientist and father of the Scientific Method

Inventor - Karl Benz, generally credited as the inventor of the gasoline powered automobile

Discoverer/Explorer

Humanitarian/Saint/Martyr

Novelist/short story - Cervantes

Playwright/Poet - William Shakespeare

Villain - Torquemada, first Grand Inquisitor of the Spanish Inquisition

Athlete - Joe Louis

Composer - Frédéric Chopin

Muscian/ Performer - The Rolling Stones

Painter - Vincent Van Gogh

Artist/ Non Painter - Phidias - "No artist will ever surpass Phidias - for progress exists in the world, but not in art. The greatest of sculptors who appeared at a time when the whole human dream could blossom in the pediment of a temple will remain for ever without an equal." - Auguste Rodin, 1911

Philosopher - Ludwig Wittgenstein, arguably the most important philosopher of the 20th century

Religious Figure - Zoroaster, Prophet of the world's oldest living religion, major influence on Judaism, Islam and Christianity

Celebrity -

Intellectual - Thucydides

Rebel - Martin Luther

Wildcard - Elizabeth I of England

Wildcard

Wildcard

I have to say as I look over all of the teams, they are still strong. You can quibble over a pick here or there, but generally I think everyone continues to do an exceptional job.

She'd make a perfect villain.

Babe Ruth is, IMO, a terrible choice for the World Draft. The fact that baseball is popular now worldwide has nothing whatsoever to do with Babe Ruth. Most people around the world have no idea who that is. We are not talking Ali or Jordan- there was NO worldwide recognition of the Babe. The only reason you made this choice, Larry, is because you are an American. I'm surprised that with so many great international athletes available to be drafted, several of them who are American, that you would be so limited in your choice. I'm pretty sure that except for Bruce Lee (who IMO is not really an athlete) this is the worst choice in this category. But now that you've made it, I don't necessarily advise you moving it to wildcard, because it's an equally bad selection there. Sorry.
you are massively underestimating how well known Babe Ruth is...
Do you have any evidence to support this? If you do, perhaps I'll change my mind. I'm always open to new facts. What evidence do you have that Babe Ruth was an athlete of international repute?
I grew up in Australia and if you asked me to name 1 baseball player it would have been Babe RuthThe only other names that would even be considered would be Joe Di Maggio, Micky Mantle and Cal Ripken Jr.Most Australians would probably have heard of Babe Ruth. Ask them to name 3 Baseballers and unless they currently follow Baseball, Babe Ruth would definitely be in the list. Internationally.Basketball = Jordan, Magic & BirdBaseball = Babe RuthHockey = GretzkyCricket = BradmanSoccer = Pele, Beckham or ####
Dude. Come on.

I'm confused. Is the Athlete selection simply a popularity contest? I was leaning heavily towards freakishly gifted myself.

 all I know is there's a few people still out there that I may grab, despite having Thorpe already. I'm curious to see how some of these categorical people would stack up in the wildcard rating. I mean, would a useless celebrity with world renown score as well as an important scientist?

I'm too lazy to go to page one and count athletes taken so far, but yeah, there are a few top tier guys left. In my eye, I would weight them equal to the top remaining scientists left (admittedly, I don't have any more scientists left on my cheat sheet; got lazy after drafting Darwin).

this music video is even dumber than I couldve imagined. A French middle aged club singer wannabe #####cat doll. Horrible song ridiculously stupid production people. I don't know. I was more referring to his spotlighting of someone else.
For the record, Beckham is a great player, but not even close to being among the all-time greatest.
Of course not.My point is that if you ask Joe Sixpack to name soccer players Beckham will be more commonly name dropped than Franz Beckenbauer or Ferenc Puskas

It's interesting to me that the generally accepted next tier of soccer players below Pele seem to be players who have been active fairly recently or are still playing. For a sport with the history and worldwide popularity that it has, there seems to be a dearth of "All-Time" greats.

I'm going with Artists - Non Painter here. As soon as I read the rules I was going to take a director here, but I thought I would be the only one. No bother, I still got the guy that I had on the top of the list.

I select Woody Allen . Woody Allen (born Allen Stewart Konigsberg; December 1, 1935) is an American film director, writer, actor, comedian, musician and playwright.

Allen's distinctive films, which run the gamut from dramas to screwball sex comedies, have made him one of the most respected living American directors. He is also distinguished by his rapid rate of production and his very large body of work.[1] Allen writes and directs his movies and has also acted in the majority of them. For inspiration, Allen draws heavily on literature, sexuality, philosophy, psychology, Jewish identity, European cinema and New York City, where he was born and has lived his entire life.

Allen is also a jazz clarinetist. What began as a teenage avocation has led to regular public performances at various small venues in his Manhattan hometown, with occasional appearances at various jazz festivals. Allen joined the Preservation Hall Jazz Band and the New Orleans Funeral Ragtime Orchestra in performances that provided the film score for his 1973 comedy Sleeper, and a rare European tour in 1996 featuring Allen was the subject of the documentary Wild Man Blues.

Over the course of his career Allen has received a considerable number of awards and distinctions in film festivals and yearly national film awards ceremonies, saluting his work as a director, screenwriter and actor.[10] When premiering his films at festivals, Allen does not screen his motion pictures in competition, thus deliberately taking them out of consideration for potential awards.

Allen's film Annie Hall won four Academy Awards in 1977, including best picture.

Allen won the 1978 O. Henry Award for his short story "The Kugelmass Episode" published in The New Yorker on May 2, 1977.

Allen twice won the César Award for Best Foreign Film, the first in 1980 for Manhattan and the second in 1986 for The Purple Rose of Cairo. Seven other of his movies were nominated for the prize.

In 1986, Allen won the Golden Globe for Best Screenplay for The Purple Rose of Cairo, and in 2009 he won the same award for Best Motion Picture - Comedy or Musical for "Vicky Christina Barcelona". He was also nominated four times as Best Director, four times for Best Screenplay and twice for Best Actor (Comedy/musical).

At the 1995 Venice Film Festival, Allen received a Career Golden Lion for lifetime achievement.

In 1996, Allen received a lifetime achievement award from the Directors Guild of America.

In 2002 Allen won the Prince of Asturias Award. Subsequently, the city of Oviedo, Spain erected a life-size statue of Allen.[24]

In 2002, Allen received the Palme des Palmes, a special lifetime achievement award granted by the Cannes Festival and whose sole other recipient is Ingmar Bergman.[25]

In a 2005 poll The Comedian's Comedian, Allen was voted the third greatest comedy act ever by fellow comedians and comedy insiders.

In June 2007 Allen received a PhD Honoris Causa from Pompeu Fabra University (Barcelona, Spain).

[edit] Academy Awards

Woody Allen has won three Academy Awards and been nominated a total of 21 times: fourteen as a screenwriter, six as a director, and one as an actor. He has more screenwriting Academy Award nominations than any other writer; all are in the "Best Original Screenplay" category. He is tied for fifth all-time with six Best Director nominations. His actors have regularly received both nominations and Academy Awards for their work in Allen films, particularly in the Best Supporting categories.

Annie Hall won four Academy Awards (Best Picture, Best Screenplay, Best Director and Best Actress). The film received a fifth nomination, for Allen as Best Actor. Hannah and Her Sisters won three, for Best Screenplay and both Best Supporting Actor categories; it was nominated in four other categories, including Best Picture and Best Director.

Despite friendly recognition from the Academy, Allen has consistently refused to attend the ceremony or acknowledge his Oscar wins. He broke this pattern only once. At the 2002 Oscars Allen made an unannounced appearance, making a plea for producers to continue filming their movies in New York City after the 9-11 attacks.[26] He was given a standing ovation before introducing a montage of movie clips featuring New York.

I have never seen a Woody Allen movie and have no desire to do so.
Doesn't surprise me. You liked Castaway too.In fact, if it weren't for your correct belief that Wrath of Khan is not only the best science fiction movies ever made, but perhaps one of the best movies ever made, I would, in all honestly, find your movie opinions..... well, let's not go there.Kirk saves another one. So to speak.

Trailers for the new one look great but so does the Bruno trailer that I just watched

17.07 Petrarch, Poet/Playwright

Francesco Petrarca (July 20, 1304 – July 19, 1374), known in English as Petrarch, was an Italian scholar, poet and one of the earliest Renaissance humanists. Petrarch is often popularly called the "Father of Humanism".[1] Based on Petrarch's works, and to a lesser extent those of (redacted) in the 16th century created the model for the modern Italian language, later endorsed by the Accademia della Crusca. Petrarch is credited with developing the sonnet to a level of perfection that would be unsurpassed to this day and spreading its use to other European languages. His sonnets were admired and imitated throughout Europe during the Renaissance and became a model for lyrical poetry. Petrarch was also known for being one of the first people to call the Middle Ages the Dark Ages, although the negative connotation of that word, as we know it today, is largely the legacy of romantic literature.

...

Petrarch is traditionally called the father of Humanism and considered by many to be the "father of the Renaissance." He was the first to offer a combining of abstract entities of classical culture and Christian philosophy. In his work Secretum meum he points out that secular achievements didn't necessarily preclude an authentic relationship with God. Petrarch argued instead that God had given humans their vast intellectual and creative potential to be used to their fullest.[21] He inspired humanist philosophy which led to the intellectual flowering of the Renaissance. He believed in the immense moral and practical value of the study of ancient history and literature - that is, the study of human thought and action. Petrarch was a devout Catholic and did not see a conflict between realizing humanity's potential and having religious faith. A highly introspective man, he shaped the nascent humanist movement a great deal because many of the internal conflicts and musings expressed in his writings were seized upon by Renaissance humanist philosophers and argued continually for the next 200 years. For example, Petrarch struggled with the proper relation between the active and contemplative life, and tended to emphasize the importance of solitude and study. Later politician and thinker (redacted) argued for the active life, or "civic humanism." As a result, a number of political, military, and religious leaders during the Renaissance were inculcated with the notion that their pursuit of personal glory should be grounded in classical example and philosophical contemplation.
I may move him depending on how things shake out, but I think pretty good value for round 17.

So this is interesting.

Look at the categories. :football:
I've never even heard of this site. What's the story? Are they former/current FBG people? Why are they ripping Joe Bryant? Obviously they're choosing to copy us, is that typical?
That's the site Matt Waldman was on staff for years. They preceded FBGs by several years; major board crash 3-4 years ago, been shrinking ever since.

The Geek Club is their version of FFA except it's more or less unmoderated (you have to go a few miles over the line before anything gets deleted). Lot of them have been banned here multiple times, hence, major love for Joe over there.

ETA: crassic

Round One

1) Lackman - Jesus Christ - Religious Leader

2) TAS -Adolf Hitler - #######/Scumbag

OK, they got the top two right; the turn picks are an awesome juxtaposition:

12) Titans&Bucs - Napoleon Bonaparte, Military Leader

Round Two

1) Titans&Bucs - Jenna Jameson, Porn Star

2) Kutulu - Micaelangelo - artist
:excited:

Post by Voltaire, the draft creator over there:After thehuddle implodes in 2001, I went over to FBG first before I came here. It was a new site in it's first offseason. But I had managment issues (got banned for no reason, saw all the other thehuddle people, quality people, getting banned around me as well) so said "#### it, I don't need the aggravation." I swore the place off and have been perfectly content to ignore their site for seven or eight years. I liked it better here at the time.

Well then a couple of weeks ago a FBG friend asked me to help him as a consultant to put together a "World's Greatest" draft. When I saw what was going on at FBG and how they actually can do somethng like this -well- I couldn't believe myself. I'm actually really impressed with the insightful posters there and what they've been able to do. Then I contrasted it to this dump and wondered if we could scrape together enough brain residue to pull off something like that here.

Yeah, they're a little more twisted with their categories.

I first joined there in 1999, had some effing great threads.

Most FFT also belong here, or like me, post only here now.

That's because you don't know the sport. There's Garrincha, and Bobby Charlton, and Di Stefano, and Cruyff, and Eusebio, and Stanley Matthews, and Labruna, and Jairzinho and Gerson, etc. Look them up.
