Worst best picture winners (Oscar) (1 Viewer)

Watching IJ ROTLA and wondered what beat it in 1981.  Chariots of Fire.  Ok.  On Golden Pond was there too.  Ok

BUT, in 1990, Dances with Wolves beat Goodfellas.  In 1994, Forrest Gump beat Pulp Fiction, and (gasp) Shawshank.

Made me wonder, what is the WORST winner ever, and who should have won instead.   Gladiator in 2000 was bad,  never saw Annie Hall, but they were mostly great back to the 60s.

If La La Land had won, it would have been up for discussion.

That movie is so terrible, I thought it was supposed to be a parody (ie Scary Movie).

Crash over Brokeback Mountain was a travesty.

Return of the King didn't deserve it(particularly against the competition)......but I guess the Lord of the Rings Trilogy as a whole might have.

IMO, 12 Years A Slave could have lost to Dallas Buyers Club and it wouldn't have been wrong.

Chicago - Meh.

I think A Thin Red Line is MUCH better than Saving Private Ryan....but both should have beaten Shakespeare.

Braveheart doesn't feel like a legit winner....but it didn't have much competition.

Pulp Fiction should have beaten Gump handily.

Crash is probably the worst. It's fairly entertaining.....but it's a "smart" movie for "dumb" people....kind of like American History X.

Couldn't disagree more about Braveheart.  I do agree it was a light year but it was deserving IMHO.

1985: Out of Africa was deserving for best Cinematography, but not best picture. Kiss of the Spider Woman or The Color Purple were far more deserving.

But, historically, I think "The Greatest Show on Earth" is widely recognized as being the worst winner of all time. I think at one point the Academy might have even apologized for giving it the award. It beat "High Noon" and "The Quiet Man".
Just read the wiki on this. Pretty cool. It's seen as a lifetime achievement award for DeMille. Plus he was conservative and it's chief competition had a writer and director blacklisted.

I'll watch it on television occasionally now...and it just doesn't hold up well.

Just looking at 1995, in regards to Braveheats competition...it seemed like the best movies of that year weren't nominated.

Rob Roy

Basketball Diaries

Usual Suspects

Casino

Heat

Toy Story

All  deserved a nod... ...   The most rewatchable? Friday.

Usual Suspects was a good flick.  I was amazed when I saw it the first time.  Not as much the second time for obvious reasons.

I'll say it.  Taxi Driver and Network both > Rocky

eta but in no way is rocky in the running for worst best picture winner

Crash and Gump obviously. Both are outright bad movies imo. Raging Bull and Goodfellas got shafted but Dances and Ordinary People were at least good movies.Going way back, Cavalcade is a mess of a movie. Considering that they did the awards for 2 year periods, it's even more ridiculous. Some of the musicals like 42nd Street or Gold Diggers of 1933, King Kong, Duck Soup or Design for Living would have been much better choices.

Haven't seen The Artist, but has anyone?  2012 wasn't a great year for nominees overall - although I haven't seen all of them nothing really jumps out at me.

It's an excellent movie and one of my favorites of the decade.Although I'm biased since I am also a fan of older movies. People that don't care about the history of movies might find the topic boring.

The English Patient. So bad.
Actually just watched it again recently and it was a lot better than I remember (which makes sense, I was probably about 16 when I first saw it.)

Yep, I have.  Not my thing, but not horrible. It wasn't a great year for movies, but Tree of Life is one of the best movies of the decade IMO. (also one of the least popular movies around these boards).

The English Patient, easy.  Jerry Maguire, please.  But the idea of The English Patient winning anything, let alone Best Picture, is laughable.  Horrible, treacly, maudlin, unwatchable film.  At least Hollywood finally got over the idea that Kristin Scott Thomas was supposed to be some beauty that men would die for

As a kid I was pretty annoyed by Gandhi over E.T. and Annie Hall (?) over Star Wars.

Right with you, except for the ET thing.  That was just awful.

Surprised everyone is so anti The English Patient. It had action, sex , WW setting and a pretty solid mystery.

It is one I need to rewatch.  I remember being bored by it, but that was in college when it came out.
Same thing happened to me. High school girlfriend made me watch it. Was bored and probably spent some of the time hooking up. After rewatching, I can firmly say I had no clue what was going on so it was like a brand new movie.

Wait Gladiator and Braveheart weren't worthy?  Say what now?

Also is this supposed to be worst winners as in the worst movies that have won the award, or worst choices for the award?  IE Forest Gump beating Shawshank was a huge travesty but Forest Gump is nowhere near the worst movie that has won the award.  People seem to be responding both ways so it's unclear.

I haven't seen a very high percentage of films that won just looking at a list. I would say Gump is way better than Birdman though.

I really liked Shakespeare in Love, but it had no business winning over Private Ryan.  That one was criminal.

Crash is easily the worst Best Picture winner that I've seen...but there are a lot that I haven't seen, especially the last decade or so.

Gladiator was highly overrated.

You think Gladiator was a bad movie?

Yeah, I thought Gump was a great movie. Even if you weren't a big fan of the movie, to say it was the worst movie to win the award is silly.

Titanic.

Good  Will Hunting... LA Confidential... As Good As It Gets..... all infinitely better movies than the sinking boat.

Chariots of Fire for me.  We were not doing anything one winter night and was thinking of Best Movies that I had never seen and rented it.  Tried to watch it twice and fell asleep both times.

I grew up with E.T, loved it as a kid and when I got into my teenage and twenty something era(1990s movies Pulp Fiction/Fargo/Usual Suspects/Clerks)...derided it and said it was overrated.

It's not. Speilberg really nails it with that movie. As much as I love Raiders of the Lost Ark....E.T. might be the best movie of that era and  the best "mature" kids movie of all time.
