I wanted to start a forum series here of worst case scenarios on big injuries to key players. I'll start a new one every few days or so, and I'll try to keep track for anyone interested.

NOTE: THIS THREAD IS JUST PRETEND. DONT HOLY CRAP YOUR PANTS!

Okay, here's the situation:

You took Barber #4 overall, and after a monster game in Week 1 and a monster game en route in Week 2, he is tackled awkwardly out of bounds on the 11 yard-line on a 26 yard dash toward the endzone. He was looking a lot like the #1 fantasy back in the NFL until he went down, and although you're no doctor, the replays look like it could be the dreaded ACL tear, maybe even worse.

You did draft back-up RB Brandon Jacobs for just such a situation, but after his initial carry (only his second of the year) went for that 11-yard barreling TD the very next play, he finished the game (two quarters) with 13 carries for 31 more yards. The Giants didn't score again.

Now, this is your dynasty league, and you've been offered Joseph Addai for Jacobs. The reports say Barber's injury might be career-ending. Thusfar, Addai has taken largely a backup role to Dominic Rhodes for the first few weeks. While he's still learning the offense, and he should surely emerge as the winner here and be the future back (hopefully) for IND, but in the 19 carries he's seen in two games, he's looked terrible and lost a fumble. JJ Arrington kind of terrible.

You know this owner, and if you don't decide by Week 3, you won't be able to trade again. In your league you can start an extra WR and only 1 RB, so you can afford to dump Jones and wait for Addai to emerge, if he does. But you would be trading away potentially a starting back.

Okay sharks, given these facts, do you trade Jacobs for Addai?

I say yes,I trade for Addai. Addai still has a better chance at being a starting rb tha Jacobs does even if the scenario you wrote happened. Jacobs is bigger at 260lbs. than Bettis was. While I'm not saying it wouldn't happen I just don't think Jacobs has the ability to take the pounding of starting a full season,IMO. Even if Addai fumbled and looked like crap early on he's a rookie and has tons more potential than Brandon Jacobs. I'm just wondering too what kind of owner would give up Addai for Jacobs. If he's gonna do it though I'd surely make the trade. My feeling would be I'd have to give up more than Jacobs to get Addai though. While this scenario about Tiki would be devasting in the fantasy world I think it would be more devasting to the Giants as they don't seem to have a viable replacement for Tiki other than Jacobs. Who would it be? Derrick Ward,Idon'tknow much about him.Little John Flowers?Sounds like he belongs with Robin Hood and his band of merrymen  You have posted a situation that bears looking at if you're a Tiki owner, which I am. He is one of my keepers in a 3 keeper money league along with S,Smith and D Jax. We are only required to start 1 rb but I surely want another decent starting rb and a couple of backs who can do bye weeks. With the way injuries happen to rb's in the NFL I can see why it's paramount NOT to be caught short in that dept. in your fantasy league. Good post and worthy of some serious consideration for Tiki owners. He is getting up there in years in terms of an nfl running back.

I suppose the real question is do you risk tanking your short-term for the long-term potential.

I personally wouldn't trade him, because I'm such a strong proponent of the "win now, worry about later."

At worst, I'd figure you've got a servicable back probably for the rest of this season, and I'm not sold that Addai will develop into a starting back, although I see no reason to doubt that he could.

In a keeper league "yes."

In a re-draft "no." You don't trade a starter for a backup. Every game in a season is so important as in most leagues, you only have 14 regular season games to decide if you make the playoffs or not. This is my starting RB (Tiki Barber) and team's best player here. With Addai* in my lineup while going through his growing pains ... my team may lose 4-5 games in a row. However, with Jacobs in there as the clear cut starter, he can pull off a few 100 yard games with a score or two sprinkled in here or there and my team plays above .500 ball and is still on pace for the playoffs.

Think here people .....

See that's my problem. I know Jacobs can be a full-load back, he just won't be amaze anyone.I would have a very hard time, even, in a multi-season league like this hypothetical situation states, trading a clear-cut starter for a guy who is no sure bet to get the starting job outright even next year.

I would rather have a dependable RB2 than a potential for servicable RB1 that has a similar chance at 40-50% workload.

Id think given Barbers age, the Giants are thinking of drafting/signing a RB after this season. Jacobs hasnt proven he can be more than a TD vulture, and his running style doesnt fit the #1 rb role of the Giants O. Hes not the great pass catcher Tiki is, and he doesnt have breakaway speed. That early in the season I MIGHT even consider pulling the trigger on the trade in a redraft league. Rhodes does have an injury history, and could see significant playing time despite not posting stellar numbers. He was drafted by the colts because of his blocking skills. The running talent could develope in the second half of the season like Kevin Jones did a couple years ago. You can likely afford to take the risk and plug in someone who'd post similar numbers to jacobs in the meantime if you draft deep at RB.

Say it loud, say it proud:

Little John Flowers

rocking in the free world
i missed that he made the move to "the other ny team." good for him. seems like he always made a good play in preseason, but was never heard from again.

Never even heard of that guy.... any info?
You'd have to watch jets pre-season games to hear of him. gotta love a guy who could live with that name (from robin hood btw):Posted: June 22, 2006

Associated Press

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- After failing four times to make the New York Jets, running back Little John Flowers was signed by the Giants on Thursday.

Flowers played this past spring in Europe with the Berlin Thunder, running for 283 yards and two touchdowns. He also caught 10 passes for 112 yards and another score.

Flowers spent the 2002 season on the Jets' practice squad, and had two stints on the same squad the following year. Named for the character from Robin Hood, Flowers was also in the Jets' training camp the past two seasons.
