Worst Drafting Teams of the Decade? (1 Viewer)

Bob Magaw

Footballguy
i nominate the rams... i guess with the lions record in recent years, they might show up high on a list like this... any other teams come to mind (OAK, etc)?

below is by a poster at a rams homer site i frequent...

the commentary can be skipped, though it is kind of funny (if redundant... understandably says UGH! a lot  ), in a painful kind of way...

this decade long list just goes 5 rounds deep (but not a lot of late round gems in this span - amazing they had london fletcher and let him get away... and he was a UFA!!)...

i shudder when i look at the sheer, utter carnage after the remains of some of these drafts... very few of these players are still on the roster (many of the rest are backup caliber, if they are even in the league)... ironically, and a sign of more bungled front office management compounding and adding insult to injury to the heinous draft record... a few of the rare competent picks, like pickett and chillar, were allowed to leave (to GB)...

i would say thanks for the memories (detritus doesn't roll off the tongue as well) to zygmunt/shaw & martz/linehan, but much of this was too traumatic, and blacked out...

_______________________________________________________

I'm only going 5 rounds deep with my true feelings at the time of the selections.... I'm a draft junkie every year since I was a young lad.

2009

1 Jason Smith Baylor.......... ....I was not super mad but I wanted Sanchez or Crabtree way more!

2 James Laurinaitis Ohio State.. I was very happy with the selection! Finally the Jacoby Shepard trend was broken!!!

3 Bradley Fletcher Iowa............ I was not happy with the pick because I thought he was a reach at the time.

4 Dorell Scott Clemson............. I was fine with the pick after reading his bio.

5 Brooks Foster North Carolina... Injury prone WR a head scratcher for me? Still dont like the pick when we had WR injury issues going into the draft???.

2008

1 Chris Long Virginia.......... I will admit he was my first choice I can't lie. Matt Ryan was my 2nd choice ughhh!

2 Donnie Avery Houston..... I was pretty mad at the time. I thought he was a reach, though he had a decent rookie year. Another 2nd round reach by the Rams.

3 John Greco Toledo...........I was ok with the pick. He has shown me nothing for a 3rd rounder. After I read about him more I was happy. ooops wrong again.

4 Justin King Penn State ... I was very happy with the pick thought he was going to be a steal. I was very wrong ughhh!

4 Keenan Burton Kentucky. I thought he was going to be a steal if he could stay healthy. Burton is much slower than I predicted.

5 Roy Schuening Oregon State.. I liked the choice thinking he would develope into a starter in 2 years based on his bio.. wrong again!

2007

1 Adam Carriker Nebraska...... I was happy with the pick because we got Ty Hill the year before so CB D.Revis was not a need for me at the time.

2 Brian Leonard Rutgers.......... I thought another 2nd round reach by the Rams ughhh! Thoughts of Jacoby Shepard danced in my head.

3 Jonathan Wade Tennessee... I was so freaking upset after the Leonard reach that they followed up with a college track star WR/converted DB ughhh!

5 Dustin Fry Clemson.............. I was disgusted with this whole draft I called in sick on Monday..

5 Clifton Ryan Michigan State... I didnt have any feelings about Ryan was a pathetic draft in my mind at the time even though he's shown some flashes.

2006

1 Tye Hill Clemson................. I was very angry and wanted CUTLER!

2 Joe Klopfenstein Colorado.... I thought OMG another 2nd round blunder Jacoby Shepard pick..

3 Claude Wroten Louisiana State... I thought he had upside so I didnt throw a fit but I dont like boom/bust upside picks in the 3rd round.

3 Jon Alston Stanford.................. I never liked the pick I thought he was a reach. A LB from Stanford ughhh!

3 Dominique Byrd USC............... I dont like drafting TE's in the 3rd round so I was not at all excited.

4 Victor Adeyanju Indiana........... I was ok with the pick after reading his bio.

5 Marques Hagans Virginia ........ I never heard of him so I was not happy once again.

2005

1 Alex Barron Florida State........ I thought we needed an OT very bad so I was happy with the pick..

2 Ronald Bartell Howard............ I thought another Jacoby Shepard 2nd round reach!

3 Oshiomogho Atogwe Stanford. I lived in California at the time so I knew about OJ and was happy with the pick.

3 Richie Incognito Nebraska..... I was happy with the pick even though he had charactor issues with bar fights.

4 Jerome Carter Florida State... I was very upset with the pick.

4 Claude Terrell New Mexico.... I was ok with the pick after reading his bio..

5 Jerome Collins Notre Dame... I did not like the pick at all.

2004

1 Steven Jackson Oregon State... I loved the pick because I saw him play at Oregon St and knew Faulk had lots of miles.

3 Tony Hargrove Georgia Tech.... I did not like the pick because he was considered a project with upside. I dont like boom/bust upside picks with 3rd rounders.

4 Brandon Chillar UCLA............ I was ok with the pick never got excited.

5 Jason Shivers Arizona State... I didnt like the pick and thought after Jackson the draft was a bust.

2003

1 Jimmy Kennedy Penn State... I was upset when Seattle took Marcus Trufant but I will admit he was my second choice after Trufant was gone.

2 Pisa Tinoisamoa Hawaii......... I was confused about the pick but not upset.

3 Kevin Curtis Utah State.......... I liked the pick even though he was not on my radar at the time.

4 Shaun McDonald Arizona State.. I did not like the pick thought he was a reach.

4 DeJuan Groce Nebraska......... I did not like the pick.

5 Dan Curley Eastern Washington.. Did not like the pick.

5 Shane Walton Notre Dame......... Did not like the pick.

5 Kevin Garrett Southern Methodist..I was ok with the pick but just ok with it.

2002

1 Robert Thomas UCLA..........I was mad at the pick.. I wanted WR Josh Reed or DE Kalimba Edwards at the time. Just being honest.

2 Travis Fisher Central Florida.. I was throwing a fit! I thought Jacoby Shepard all over again ughhh!

3 Lamar Gordon North Dakota State.. I didnt like the pick.. Thought he was a huge reach for the 3rd round.

3 Eric Crouch Nebraska....... A stupid lame @#$%& me off pick!

4 Travis Scott Arizona State... After Crouch was selected I knew this draft was going to be a bust!

5 Courtland Bullard Ohio State... Another horrible pick for me.

2001

1 Damione Lewis Miami (FL)..... I wanted DT Marcus Stroud but I was not upset with the pick because he was my 2nd choice.

1 Adam Archuleta Arizona State.. I loved the pick thought he was going to be special at the time.

1 Ryan Pickett Ohio State........ I was not very happy at the time we already took a DT D.Lewis.. I wanted TE Todd Heap or DE Kyle Vanden Bosch at the time.

2 Tommy Polley Florida State... I was ok with the pick. He was on my radar and I saw him play some for FL St.

3 Brian Allen Florida State ....... I was not happy at all because we already took his teamate LB in the 2nd round ughhh!

4 Milton Wynn Washington State.. I thought what a wasted pick! never heard of him at the time.

4 Brandon Manumaleuna Arizona... I was so/so with the pick but not happy at the time.

5 Jerametrius Butler Kansas State.. I was ok with the pick because he was on my radar at the time.

2000

1 Trung Canidate Arizona.............. I was screaming REACH!! I wanted DE Darren Howard. WR D.Northcutt or DE John Engelberger at the time. Being honest.

2 Jacoby Shepherd Oklahoma State... THE BEGINNING OF THE 2nd Round Reach TREND for the Rams. UGHHHHHH!!!!!!

3 John St. Clair Virginia.................I was not happy with the pick..

4 Kaulana Noa Hawaii............... I thought he could of been had in the 5th or 6th.

5 Brian Young Texas-El Paso.... I had no problem with the pick but I cant remember him on my radar at the time.

So there you have it. Those were my honest feelings about all the drafts right after each pick.

Hey Bob, here are the Lions selections. I believe there's only 1 or 2 players that the Lions draftd in the Matt Millen era even on the team. What makes the Lions the worst IMO are all of the consistently high picks and they keep blowing them over and over.

There's no doubt though that looking at all of these teams and their poor picks, you have to do well in the draft or you have nothing.

From 2002 through 2006, Ernie Sims is the only draft pick that is still on the Lions. I believe they had top 10 picks in all of those drafts. Calvin Johnson is really the only significant talent that Millen drafted in his 8 drafts. Last year, Mayhew had a great draft and it produced more good players than the 8 Millen drafts combined.

Hey Anthony,I'll even say that I think the Roy Williams draft was a good one. My reasoning is they drafted Roy Williams in the 1st, they got some decent years out of him, a slightly above average wide receiver and then they traded him for a 1st and 3rd.So, for that draft pick, they got an extra 3rd for it plus they got to use him as a decent player for a few years. So to me, that actual pick was good for the Lions even though he's not on the team.

Number of players drafted (2000 - 2009) that were later selected to the Pro Bowl (on any team):

10 - NYJ, SD

9 - BAL, IND, NE

8 - ARI, DAL, GB, PHI

7 - BUF, CAR, DEN, NO, NYG, SEA

6 - CHI, TEN, HOU, MIN, PIT, SF

5 - CIN, WAS

4 - ATL, CLE, JAX

3 - KC, MIA

2 - DET, OAK

1 - STL, TB

One of those picks for the Raiders is perennial Pro-Bowl punter Shane Lechler, one of the best punters, if not the best, of the past decade. Pretty sad...At least Al Davis hasn't lost his eye for punting talent.

nice list, david...& thanx for the team draft comparison link upthread...aside from pro bowl, it would be interesting to see comparisons of teams by measures of...players still on roster... poor record could also indicate poor scouting & failure to identify internal talent... poor coaching & inability to develop prospects... and poor front office work to bungle the cap...players on other rosters, but not starting caliber...players out of the league...by any measure... the rams have been really, really, really bad...i forgot about TB, but i guess you don't draft #3 for nothing...STL, DET & OAK were predictable... i almost put CLE, but thought they have had some good picks in recent years, like joe thomas, d'qwell jackson, kellen winslow... braylon edwards gets mixed reviews, but the rams should be so lucky to have a WR as talented...KC should have been obvious...ATL & MIA seemed down and out a few years ago, and i guess must have drafted poorly to hit the skids at that time...i guess JAX has blown a lot of picks other than MJD, and going forther back to stroud/hendo... daryl smith has been good, not great... rashean mathis was pro bowl caliber... garrard has done OK where they got him... harvey and groves blew up in their faces... last years draft looks good, so maybe they get back on track (new GM)...interesting (to me), that in david's list, even though a pro bowl appearance that might have occurred in 2000 for a since long retired player would have got on the list... ALL nine teams in the top three tiers made the playoffs last season. polian, ozzie and belichick are counted among the shrewdest draft mavens in the league, & not surprisingly, they are all their in the second tier...i wonder if it is an advantage to pick later (many years, especially recently, that describes IND, BAL & NE)... belichick is famous for his philosophy of trading down into the 2nd round (prospects grade about same between 20-40, sometimes 10-40, and they cost a lot less)...the rams have picked #2 in '08 & '09, and may not have gotten elite players in chris long & jason smith... the jury is still very much out on both of them... long finally flashed in the seond half of the season last year... it was disappointing to see smith line up at RT, with barron at LT... passing on both ryan and sanchez has practically compelled them to take bradford, who hopefully will be the franchise QB they need, but would cause them to pass on rare prospect suh... they will have to committ a huge amount of money to these three players (though not sure how much that matters in a possible post-salary cap landscape?)...anyways, the rams were blowing 1st round picks on kennedy, carriker, tye hill, and teams like BAL were NAILING lower 1st rounders, and landing ray lewis, ed reed, todd heap, etc (overcame some whiffs on boller & travis taylor)...it is funny to me that SD had maybe the worst pick ever in leaf... and nimbly recovered not once, but TWICE! when brees got injured, they got rivers... this is a team that understands the importance of QB...they also benefited from downswings leading to #1 picks, which they leveraged into the manning & vick trades... belichick is a master of manipulating the draft... of course, it helps to have a coveted players those years, which rams haven't benefited from.

i guess JAX has blown a lot of picks other than MJD, and going forther back to stroud/hendo... daryl smith has been good, not great... rashean mathis was pro bowl caliber... garrard has done OK where they got him... harvey and groves blew up in their faces... last years draft looks good, so maybe they get back on track (new GM)...

interesting (to me), that in david's list, even though a pro bowl appearance that might have occurred in 2000 for a since long retired player would have got on the list... ALL nine teams in the top three tiers made the playoffs last season. polian, ozzie and belichick are counted among the shrewdest draft mavens in the league, & not surprisingly, they are all their in the second tier...

i wonder if it is an advantage to pick later (many years, especially recently, that describes IND, BAL & NE)... belichick is famous for his philosophy of trading down into the 2nd round (prospects grade about same between 20-40, sometimes 10-40, and they cost a lot less)...

the rams have picked #2 in '08 & '09, and may not have gotten elite players in chris long & jason smith... the jury is still very much out on both of them... long finally flashed in the seond half of the season last year... it was disappointing to see smith line up at RT, with barron at LT... passing on both ryan and sanchez has practically compelled them to take bradford, who hopefully will be the franchise QB they need, but would cause them to pass on rare prospect suh... they will have to committ a huge amount of money to these three players (though not sure how much that matters in a possible post-salary cap landscape?)...

anyways, the rams were blowing 1st round picks on kennedy, carriker, tye hill, and teams like BAL were NAILING lower 1st rounders, and landing ray lewis, ed reed, todd heap, etc (overcame some whiffs on boller & travis taylor)...

it is funny to me that SD had many the worst pick ever in leaf... and nimbly recovered not once, but TWICE! when brees got injured, they got rivers... this is a team that understands the importance of QB...

they also benefited from downswings leading to #1 picks, which they leveraged into the manning & vick trades... belichick is a master of manipulating the draft... of course, it helps to have a coveted players those years, which rams haven't benefited from.

The three drafts from 2006 to 2008, I believe he only "hit" on Mayo? Sure, he's done great manipulating other teams into giving up picks; but look at what he has to show for those picks...

Number of players drafted (2000 - 2009) that were later selected to the Pro Bowl (on any team):

10 - NYJ, SD

9 - BAL, IND, NE

8 - ARI, DAL, GB, PHI

7 - BUF, CAR, DEN, NO, NYG, SEA

6 - CHI, TEN, HOU, MIN, PIT, SF

5 - CIN, WAS

4 - ATL, CLE, JAX

3 - KC, MIA

2 - DET, OAK

1 - STL, TB
nice list, david...& thanx for the team draft comparison link upthread...

aside from pro bowl, it would be interesting to see comparisons of teams by measures of...

players still on roster... poor record could also indicate poor scouting & failure to identify internal talent... poor coaching & inability to develop prospects... and poor front office work to bungle the cap...

players on other rosters, but not starting caliber...

players out of the league...

by any measure... the rams have been really, really, really bad...

i forgot about TB, but i guess you don't draft #3 for nothing...

STL, DET & OAK were predictable... i almost put CLE, but thought they have had some good picks in recent years, like joe thomas, d'qwell jackson, kellen winslow... braylon edwards gets mixed reviews, but the rams should be so lucky to have a WR as talented...

KC should have been obvious...

touche...

nice rejoinder... belichick probably is trading on his rep from prior drafts (in my case)...
