Worst owner in sports right now? (1 Viewer)

Tom Gores/Pistons.  Doesnt even go to games and when he does, he's drunk.  NTTAWWT

I dunno, the Haslams seem pretty bad, but they might have finally turned it around.  

I think the Spanos family is awful for moving the team from San Diego.  

 
This is a loaded field, but it's gotta be Snyder.

He's Nixon during Watergate - for 20 years and running. Just completely out of touch and misreading everything. He thinks people love him.

Crazy stuff. Thread on Reddit I was reading like a year ago here. Just read thru some of the top comments.

This one here, I mean this is like slave owner mentality, like wtf. Granted it's Reddit, take it as legit as you will, but...

I’ve actually done plumbing/water treatment on his property. The property manager promptly stated upon my arrival that Mr. Snyder doesn’t allow direct eye contact with workers so If I should happen to see him to look down or away from his direction. Really swell guy... /s

As a Browns fan, I would agree with this. I think he may have turned it around with Dorsey. 

If you haven’t read the ESPN article, it’s pretty enlightening and embarrassing if your a fan. 

 
Haslam, Snyder and Dolan are tough to beat in this one.  The Browns' recent success was despite Haslam, not because of them.  But at least they have had some recent success, which can't be said for Snyder and Dolan.  Still, Haslam belongs in jail, not a luxury box.

 
Fords - Detroit Lions

  • 1 playoff win in 60 years - all other teams have at least 3
  • 1 conference title appearance in 60 years - all other teams except the relatively new Texans have at least 2
  • only NFC team never to go to a Super Bowl
  • havent won a division title in a 4 team division in 25 years
  • gave Matt Millen an extension after years of futility because he enjoyed talking football with him
  • Caused two generational talents to retire in their prime because of the franchise’s ineptitude at winning
  • honestly doesn’t care about the product on the field since fans will continue to sell out games
Gores of the Pistons is also awful but the Fords have been incompetent for at least a half of a century longer.

It sure as hell isn't Dan Snyder. Snyder's Redskins have won 2 division titles in the past 7 years. Ford's Lions have won 3 division titles in 50 years including zero in the past 25 years.

Going to have to second this nomination.  Bought the Piston as a investment and it has been a good one nut now it the time to sell.

The Ford family who owns the Lions are good owners in terms of investing in the city but they just have never known what do to or how to win...so I guess they would be bad owners as well.

I think you need to look beyond the field when it comes to worst owner.  I don't think the Fords have the off-the-field baggage that Snyder has, and has brought to the team (the cheerleader escort scandal, defense of the name, claiming Rueben Foster are a few that immediately come to my mind).  Here's an article by Dave McKenna from a few years ago that listed many of his failings.  And, oh, Snyder sued the Washington City Paper for publishing this article.

Really depends on what is meant by worst.   If it means inability to put out a winning team, Ford's should be the only first ballot unanimous HOFer.

My definition of worst owner is inability to put a winning team on the field. If your opinion differs then I guess we'll agree to disagree. No question Snyder sucks as a person and deserves all the hatred he gets. I can understand the viewpoint of Snyder as a worse owner if you're factoring in off-field baggage. With that said, the Redskins are light years closer to winning a Super Bowl than the Lions and that makes Ford worse IMO.

Yeah, I guess we'll have to agree to disagree on the criteria then.  My main problem is that, even if the Redskins were to win the SB, I would not even enjoy it as a DC local because I don't want Snyder to ever get that moment.

I was factoring that in when I said Snyder. He stands out even among his uber-despicable peers.

There was an old, crotchety sports reporter named Bert Sugar who for whatever reason used to call into the Portland sports talk radio station and tell great stories, usually after he'd get into his beloved scotch.  He told a story once of meeting Dan Snyder for the first time, I think it was at a press conference.  When it was his turn to ask Snyder a question, he began by addressing the new owner as "Dan"....Snyder snapped at him immediately and said "It's Mr. Snyder".  Sugar was probably 30 years his senior at the time?
What a turd.

 
There has been a lot of talk of him finally delegating responsibilities (notably the interviews for the head coach search where it is claimed he wasn't even present ), but I feel like any thread about the worst owners in sports has to at least have a mention of Mike Brown (Bengals).  I can only hope the talk of him taking significant steps back from his control are legit.

I can't remember why he started calling in or if they scheduled an interview with him first, but he really took to the two local guys and then would just call in at random times.  For a while, he was making picks in football that he called "Bert's Lovable Losers".  It was great.  He was a national treasure.

Has it been a good investment? They are in salary cap hell, are too good to get a top pick but not good enough to make the playoffs and they have the worst attendance in the NBA
