WORST Quarterback to play in a Superbowl (1 Viewer)

IF the Bears make it to the Superbowl Rex Grossman can join a list of talent challenged QBs who made it to the big one.

My nomination: Trent Dilfer / Tony Banks

I found this link to an old story at SI about this topic:

David Woodley. I saw a piece about him on Inside the NFL awhile back. He just couldn't handle the pressure of being an NFL quarterback on the big stage and played about as badly in the Super Bowl as anyone ever has (he completed 4 passes). He turned to the bottle and died of liver failure a few years ago. Sad.

Craig Morton had a decent NFL career but played terribly in 2 Super bowls. 7 picks combined.

Tony stinkin Banks played in a Superbowl? How come I didnt know that?
Well- Dilfer got his bell rung and Tony f'n Banks came in for a play or two. They practically pushed a dazed and groggy Dilfer back out there during the series to get Banks off. I hate Tony Banks. He set new standards for suck.

I think Kerry Collins deserves a vote of confidence here...

Super Bowl XXXV

:goodposting: I was thinking of those Dolphins but there was the whole Strock-Woodley thing and I couldn't rember which one got most of the blame for that Super Bowl.

Winner. That's sad about Woodley. I wasn't aware of his demise. That Dolphins team had to be the worst team ever to appear in a Super Bowl:

Tony stinkin Banks played in a Superbowl? How come I didnt know that?
He was actually Baltimore's starting QB the year they won it all. He played more than Dilfer did.
Then you have to include Jay Schroeder. He came into the game for a snap against Denver when Doug Williams hyperextended his knee (and looked an awful lot like he fumbled . . . ) and promptly got sacked.

Jim "Crash" Jensen for the HOF!! :lmao:

Craig Morton? Long, mediocre career 54% completion percentage lifetime, more INT's (187) then TD passes (183). Super Bowl V goes 26/12/127/1/3. Outdoes himself in SB XII with 15/4/39/0/4 before being yanked for Norris Weese, which looks like the worst performance by a starting QB in a Super Bowl. Anyway, he's got to be the Worst QB to start 2 Super Bowls

Dilfer slightly edges out Kordell (who had 4 carries in the Super Bowl).
Nice link. I didn't realize Harrington sucked himself onto the alltime lousy list so high. But where's all-time-suck leader Tony f'n Banks?
Banks only had two really bad years; 1998 and 2000. He was actually above average in 1999 (and even had twice as many TDs as INTs), and the other three years he started he was just slightly below league average. Banks had a 12.0 career YPC average, which was quite a bit better than the average QB.

TWO WORDS ONE NAME

Neil O'Donnell

I have never seen a qb be so bad in a superbowl. He gave Larry Brown the MVPa big fat contract from the Raiders, and two 2 int's.

Woodley just barely ahead of Eason. Surprised Bledsoe didn't get mentioned. And Earl Morrall's choke job in Super Bowl III shouldn't be ignored.

Ben Roethlisberger
Ben Roethlisberger
not the worst but very very very close

The Interceptiberger isn't the worst... but he's in the top 5 easily. The Steelers won that title in spite of Ben's ineptitude.

The thread title is "worst quarterback", not "worst performance". Bledsoe and Morrall were good (if not great) QBs, and Eason had a few good years before converting to "career 3rd stringer".

WRONG! The truth is the Steelers wouldn't have gotten TO the Super Bowl without him. People forget just how well he played in the playoff games prior to the Super Bowl.If you want to say thay Roethlisberger had a bad Super Bowl QB performance I could go along with that but there have some that were even worse. I am not going to look through each Super Bowl game but how about Fran Tarkenton's SB IX performance: 11/26, 102 yds. 0 TDs, 3 INT.

But the title of the thread isn't which QB had the worst SB game, it is asking the worst QBs to play in a Super Bowl.

Looking at Roethlisberger's career stats I don't see how you can say that he is one of the worst QBs to play in the Super Bowl. His first two seasons his passer ratings were 98.1 and 98.6 -- that is damn good (in the top 3 for the AFC for both seasons). This year he has definitely had problems but the guy has been through a hell of a lot and in truth probably should not have been playing early in the season.

Those saying that he is the worst QB to play in a Super Bowl are either fishing or don't know what they're talking about (maybe both).

Ben was in his second year in the NFL. We do not know yet his place in history (good QB vs. bad QB). His performance wasn't good, but that doesn't mean he is one of the worst QB to play in the superbowl. If Ben goes on to be a pro bowl QB, he will not be labeled the Worst QB to play in the Superbowl. If he goes on to play in another Superbowl or win another Superbowl, he will not be labeled worst QB in a Superbowl. It will simply be a bad performance.

Ben is very young for a QB and I think he will turn out to be a solid QB for years to come.

And let's not forget he played GREAT in the 3 playoff games before the superbowl. His superbowl performance with the exception, not the norm in the 2005 playoffs. Steelers would have never made the Superbowl if it weren't for Ben's great play in the 3 playoff games (on the road).

You couldn't expect more from a QB in only his second year.

Wouldn't all this make Hasselback the worst Super Bowl QB of all time? After all, he lost to Ben.
