Would the Browns consider taking Calvin Johnson? (1 Viewer)

Raider Nation

Devil's Advocate
CLEVELAND @ 1.03 - Assuming Oakland and Detroit pass on him, shouldn't Cleveland look hard at Johnson? I know they have more pressing needs (like A-Pete), but a trio of Edwards, Johnson and Winslow would be  ... even Charlie Frye couldn't screw that up.

CLEVELAND @ 1.04 - Probably won't be an issue, as Tampa Bay has just chosen Johnson.

I sure hope the Raiders don't pass on him (assuming Porter and/or Moss are out).
Man, I am so torn on this.If the kid has a Moss-like rookie season after we passed on him, I'll end it all.OTOH, if I have to watch Andrew Walter throw another pass in a Raiders uniform...

There'll be some FA options in a month or so. We'll see but I don't think AW we'll see much time this year. At least, I hope not for our sake. If it's true about it only taking a conditional 4th for Carr, I think they should at least explore that. Then again, with our O line Carr might not be a good fit. And we could do a whole lot worse than Jeff Garcia. How has Tui remained on our roster for so long anyway?

Yeah, because that trio of Fitzgerald, Boldin, and EJames worked wonders for ARZ. Or the Roy Williams, Furrey, KJones combo for DET. Or the TBarber, Burress, Shockey combo for NYG. Wrs are overrated. Overrated prima donnas. Charlie Frye could screw it up. Football is a pace and intensity game. If you have no running game to keep the opposing D honest, if you have no OL blocking, if you have no defense, it doesn't matter if you have 2 top draft picks at WR (see Matt Millen). There is no way in hog heaven that Cleveland takes Johnson with the head coach a DEF guy. The Browns have too many other needs. With Edwards and Winslow the Browns are actually decent with receivers. It's every other faucet of the team that could use an upgrade.

I don't think it matters who they put back there with the line being that bad.

Johnson is a luxury the Browns can't afford. They're a team that needs help at far more important positions than WR. This is a franchise that has used top 10 picks at TE and WR recently and overall aren't improving as a team. They need to get the basics squared away in Cleveland and even though Johnson is intriguing as hell this would be a very unwise pick.

...and if you look where the coach came from you will notice that WR is low on the priority list. If the Crennel has any say in the matter you can expect that WR will be the last thing on the wish list for CLE. (I could see QB or RB if not defense)

Why not have the Raiders trade a 4th for Carr and then draft Thomas. I know you haven't been happy with Gallery, but that would give you 2 Ts for the future and help to improve your line. If that is the case I think that Carr could progress quite well with Moss and Porter. Also, Jordan being back will actually make teams respect the run.

He might be the "best player" on the board, but certainly not the best player for their team. I think that AD is a smoke screen and could see Crennel listening to his old buddy Weis about how good Quinn is going to be.

Porter's as good as gone, but I agree overall. Plummer seems to be available, has some mobility, and might be a good fit in Oakland.

the 3/4 coinflip will be huge. Cleveland @ 3 would get a lot of value out of a trade. Tampa @ 3 would get the premier player in the draft.

Talking about Cleveland's pick, I haven't heard anyone mention their GM yet. I just woke up but it's Savage right? Came over from Baltimore where they did an excelllent job in the draft for so many years. It would seem he'd have a tremendous amount of say in this. I'd say look at the blueprint the Ravens went with at least a little.

Crennel will have as much say in who the Browns draft as he did in who the Browns hired as assistant coaches this offseason.....none. Winning the coin flip with TB would be huge for the Browns. It would give them more trade down ability.

My gut says Phil Savage will covet Adrian Peterson. He did use early picks on Travis Taylor and Kyle Boller, but Baltimore was always a run-first team who relied on heavy duty RBs to grind out the yards. Also, the run-first philosophy is somewhat consistent with Crennel's New England pedigree. The Patriots have passed a lot lately, but they never used a top 35 pick on a WR during Crennel's years there. Maybe that strategy rubbed off on him.

The team has already invested a lot in the passing game, having used early picks on Winslow, Edwards, and Wilson. Johnson is better than all of those guys, but I think they can win with that group and Peterson would be a major instant upgrade over Droughns.

Quinn is another strong possibility. It really depends on how much the Browns coaches believe in Frye. We might not know until draft day.
