Its been my experience that many people have a backwards and negative view of men with long hair.

Im contemplating cutting my hair to help with my job search. Would long hair affect your view of a potential candidate in any way? If so why?

I am a blue collar guy and I know its less of an issue than with white collar jobs but would still like input about both. I wouldnt be too happy about cutting my hair since its an homage to my viking ancestors and I dont think people should be judged by superficial things such as this.

I appreciate the input.

Who was the guy in your picture with what appeared to be short hair? Why did you remove the picture?

Would I hire a man with long hair? Of course.

Would it inadvertently make me thing a little less of him upon first meeting, especially if I'm considering him for a professional position? Probably. But it wouldn't be some absolute bar like a face tattoo or giant gauges probably would be.

Be serious please guys. The question is just about hair in general

My hair was tied back in that pic. I removed it because I didnt like it

I don't care what a person looks like as long as they're qualified. Although it definitely helps if they're a hot blonde.........

Why should it matter on a man and not a woman? What does it make you think about them? Does short hair on a woman matter in any way?

Ive got that covered

You know, if you guys dont want me posting as much as I do then it would benefit you to give me accurate advice that may help me instead of just cracking jokes on me.

I'm not saying it should matter. Your question was whether it would affect my view of a potential candidate. I asked honestly - which is that it probably would slightly in the negative and probably stem from my unconscious.

Why? Well, while I would agree that length of hair is arbitrary and shouldn't mean anything, it's really a sign of preparedness and care for what you're requesting to endeavor. Right or wrong, a clean cut look is what is common and accept. I keep my hair cut cleanly out of respect for my profession. If someone didn't, I'd see them not caring as much about what he is trying to do (in this case get a job).

But you haven't asked for advice in this thread.

If you want advice the best advice you can be given for this situation is to cut your hair short and neat.

If the guys face is freshly shaved and his hair is clean and tied back he isnt clean cut?

Perhaps but you're not my type

Of course ibasked for advice in the OP. I want to know how much of an issue long hair is

I would not. Appearance matters. Perception is reality. Etc etc. Thats the reality in Corporate America. There's money to be made but you have to fall into line in order to partake in the festivities.

It's a relative question. But yes, if he stood next to a dude who is had short, clean cut hair, he would appear relatively less clean cut.

I have a feeling that no matter what I say you're going to have some conclusive rhetorical retort to come back with.

You arent my type either

Given the job I doubt it would matter as long as you looked neat and clean. In a professional, customer facing job? Yeah it would be a problem.

What kind of work are you looking for?
Truck driving. Shouldnt be much of annissue i think but would still like some input in general
Sorry, I missed this. Dont think it would be an issue in many of the service industries, such as truck driving. Of course, you'll still need to look professional and presentable, though long hair shouldnt be an issue.

In general, regardless of whether it would matter to me (it would not), it matters to many. I can't imagine it'd be an issue in freight however I wouldn't be the one to ask. Hope you get a killer job, don't draw and drive.

Of course I shave and bathe for the interview, and if I were to get the job I dont let my facial hair get beyond a 5 o clock shadow but im always clean.

Even though its a driving I was going to go to the interview in dress shoes, slacks and a button up shirt (no tie)

Would it be weird to dress like that?

If we are talking a ponytail in back but bald on top, I probably move him down the list. I need employees who can see things for what they really are. Looking ridiculous doesn't leave me with that impression.

No, you didn't. You asked people's opinion on how they'd react to a potential job candidates with long hair.

Advice implies you are asking people to suggest you take an action within the specific subset of facts that you're dealing with.

Look, the only "advice" that you want to hear is that people with long hair should be given privilege and preference to a job position because they are awesome free spirits who are clearly super talented. In that case, rock on with your flowing mane and anyone who doesn't give you a job is a close-minded fascist.

That should be fine.

I wouldn't think so. In fact, that sounds like the perfect dress for your type of interview.

Hard to say. It seems unlikely in most trucking companies the guy interviewing you will be wearing one. You could be overdressed at that point. I'd leave the tie off personally.

That is what I was thinking. If its a garage manager he will probably just be wearing jeans and flannel so im worried dressing up will make it seem like im not one of the guys

What does sexism have to do with it? I'm not saying someone with long hair looks more feminine or less masculine. I'm saying it looks like they don't care quite as much about the professional position they are seeking because, right or wrong, the societal stereotype is that professionals have short, clean cut hair.

But that view only applies to male professionals, so its sexist

That view may be immature or naive, but it isn't his fault Zow didn't know what sexist meant.
