Other than a great view of the game, it seems like it would be a PITA. Pucks zipping by your head and legs. Constantly breaking up scrums. Players, coaches and fans yelling at you.
You'd have to be a glutton for punishment. Does it pay well? Are there groupies?
But I'm a local hockey ref anyway, so of course I'd want to be at the top level.
Yea, you get some pucks in your direction, but for the most part you position yourself away from the play. Breaking up fights is not so hard, they are usually punched out and tired anyway. And then fans??? A rowdy crowd is such a buzz. Its awesome when a packed house thinks they know better then you, its easy to call a game from the stands but i challenge any one of them to last a period on the ice.
Coaches can yell at you all they want, but in the end you hold the trump card...you can toss them. As soon as you remind them of that, they usually calm down.
My son played hockey with Brian Pochmara's son so I've been able to discuss this topic. I know I could never do what he is doing for a living, but he really is and (growing up) was a rink rat. It's an ideal job for someone that loves the game, but doesn't possess the talent to play at that level. He has some amazing stories too
