The Athletic's Chad Graff reports that Adam Thielen underwent season-ending ankle surgery on Tuesday.
The Vikings have placed Thielen on injured reserve and he is officially done for the regular season. Per NFL Network's Tom Pelissero, Thielen is looking at a recovery timetable of roughly one month, so only a deep playoff run would open up the possibility of Thielen playing before the 2022 season. Thielen finishes his age 31 season with 95 targets for 67 receptions, 726 yards, and 10 TDs. Thielen's 1.63 yards per route run is his lowest mark since 2015. His average depth of target also dropped to 9.5, again his lowest since 2015. Thielen challenged defenses deep in 2019 and 2020 but shifted to more of an underneath role in 2021. While that is not a great sign given his age, Thielen has also recorded at least nine TDs in three of four seasons. Thielen is under contract with the Vikings through 2024. He'll return next season as a secondary option to Justin Jefferson, operating as a chain-mover and TD scorer.

I think so, especially if Wentz doesn't play. I am leaning towards playing him over OBJ.scothawk said:Does this make Osborn >>>> Pittman this week?
Not sure what type of rankings you are looking at but Thielen will be 32 when the season starts. Can someone explain to me why a player who's preformed in the top 20 per game avg at his position for the past how many years is ranked with guys like dj chark and Jakobi Meyers?
He's played a chain mover/redzone guy for the past two years. That kind of game can last into the mid-thirties.Not sure what type of rankings you are looking at but Thielen will be 32 when the season starts.
Like I said, I dont know what type of rankings you are looking at, but much like "all-star" selection snubs, its about who you would lower (or remove) to make room for the player. He's played a chain mover/redzone guy for the past two years. That kind of game can last into the mid-thirties.

“Adam Thielen looks more like his previous self, and his play is reminiscent of his most productive stretch from 2016 to 2018. After some injury-shortened seasons and limited production when healthy, this might be big news.”
Adam Thielen caught 3-of-4 targets for 34 yards in the Vikings' Week 1 win over the Packers.
Week 1 was the Justin Jefferson show. Minnesota's star receiver went for 184 yards and two touchdowns on 11 targets, leaving little meat on the bone left for his teammates, Thielen included. With how dominant Jefferson has been through two seasons, this could be a recurring theme for the Vikings' secondary pass-catchers. Thielen should be able to bounce back versus the Eagles in Week 2, though it may be best to treat him like a WR3 for fantasy purposes.

Adam Thielen caught 4-of-7 targets for 52 yards in the Vikings' Week 2 loss to the Eagles.
Thielen didn't see a single first-half target but was able to rack up some catches late with the Vikings in comeback mode chasing points on the scoreboard. He ended up leading the team in receiving yards on a night Kirk Cousins threw for a mostly-empty 221 yards. Cousins also tossed three red-zone picks in this one. Thielen now has just seven catches for 86 scoreless yards through two weeks, playing a very distant second fiddle to Justin Jefferson. Thielen is looking like a low-floor, low-ceiling WR3/4 ahead of a Week 3 date with the Lions.

Adam Thielen caught 4-of-8 targets for 36 yards and one touchdown in the Vikings' Week 6 win over the Dolphins.
Thielen has next to no ceiling at 32 years old, but his floor remains somewhat steady as the Vikings' second option behind Justin Jefferson. Each wideout saw eight targets in this one, but Jefferson went over 100 yards while Thielen caught a short touchdown and two-point conversion. It was Thielen's second touchdown of the year, but he's yet to top 72 yards in a game. Thielen will be a WR3/4 for Week 8 against the Cardinals coming out of the Vikings' bye.

Adam Thielen (knee) was a full participant in Wednesday's practice.
Thielen took a shot to the knee early in Week 8 and left the field with a noticeable limp. He returned moments later and played out the remainder of the game as if nothing happened. Thielen finished the day with six catches for 67 yards. Though the injury looked painful, the full practice to start the week means it should be a non-issue. Thielen is a low-upside WR3 heading into Week 9.

Adam Thielen caught 9-of-10 targets for 61 yards and a touchdown in the Vikings' Week 12 win over the Patriots.
Securing a touchdown has become Thielen's only route to a ceiling performance at 32 years old, but he paid off with a 15-yard score late in the game this time around. He also tied Justin Jefferson for a team-high in receptions while falling a single target short of the superstar wideout. Thielen will be a touchdown-or-bust WR4 for his Week 13 game versus the Jets.

Adam Thielen caught 3-of-4 targets for 41 yards and a touchdown in the Vikings' Week 15 win over the Colts.
The touchdown was the third in the last four weeks for Thielen, who scored on a goal-line pass from Kirk Cousins. The Vikings were chasing points the entire game, but it was K.J. Osborn (10/157/1) getting the targets over Thielen. Kirk Cousins throwing for 400+ yards in consecutive weeks had led to a pair of ceiling games for Thielen. The Vikings will have a tougher matchup vs the Giants in Week 16.

Adam Thielen caught 3-of-4 targets for 50 yards in the Vikings' Wild Card Round loss to the Giants.
Thielen finished WR30 in fantasy points, but it was a compiling effort that did little to help fantasy managers. He failed to deliver a 100-yard game in 2022, despite playing all 17 games. Even worse, he fell down the target pecking order as the season went on. T.J. Hockenson passed him to become the clear No. 2 option in Minnesota, and down the stretch, K.J. Osborn was arguably just as important to the offense as the veteran wide receiver. Thielen's ridiculous contract will keep him in Minnesota in 2023. However, he profiles as a double-digit round fantasy pick. If the Vikings add any receiver competition in free agency or in the draft, Thielen could fall to a later-round dart throw option.

Adam Thielen told the Pat McAfee Show that the Vikings and Thielen are "working through some stuff" related to his 2023 cap hit of $19.96 million.
Thielen's $11.8 million base salary is fully guaranteed if he's still on the roster in mid-March. The Vikings could create $6.4 million in cap space by releasing Thielen, and $13.4 million if they release him with a post-June 1 designation. They enter the offseason $23.4 million over the cap and will need to shed some big salaries or restructure contracts. Thielen took a clear back seat to T.J. Hockenson after Hockenson was brought over midseason and finished with a 70/716/6 receiving line. Thielen also noted earlier today he'd like to retire with the Vikings. It might take a paycut to make that happen.

Vikings beat writer Andrew Krammer reports Adam Thielen's contract remains "an ongoing discussion" with the Vikings.
As Krammer notes in the article, Thielen's 2023 cap hit is the highest among any non-quarterback on the Vikings' roster next season. Set to earn nearly $20 million in 2023, Thielen, 32, has steadily declined in YPR each of the last three seasons, and hasn't cracked the 1,000-yard mark since 2018. The veteran receiver is set to turn 33 in August and was the third option on an offense post-trade deadline after the Vikings went out and acquired T.J. Hockenson from the Lions. The Vikings could free up $6.4 million in cap space if they release Thielen, and $13.4 million if they release him with a post-June 1 designation. A likely cut candidate, Thielen could remain with the Vikings if the two sides are able to agree on a restructured deal.

The Star Tribune's Ben Goessling reports the Vikings release of Adam Thielen is a "real possibility."
"They’ve been working on a restructured deal, and will continue to talk, but a release is a real possibility," Goessling said Thursday morning. Thielen, slated to make almost $20 million in 2023, would account for a massive salary cap hit as his play continues to decline. Entering his age-33 season, the Vikings could move on from their longtime slot receiver and lean on K.J. Osborn following his mini-breakout in 2022.

Vikings released WR Adam Thielen.
There may not have been a more obvious cap casualty than Thielen heading into this offseason. The soon-to-be 33-year-old receiver was set to earn nearly $20 million next season -- the highest cap hit of any non-quarterback on the Vikings' roster. Now, Thielen will have a chance to test the open market fresh off a year in which he posted a career-low in yards per route run. Thielen hasn't eclipsed the 1,000-yard mark since 2018 when he went for 113-1373-9 and has totaled 1,442 yards over the last two seasons. While clearly on the decline, Thielen can still serve as a legitimate red zone threat. His 25 red zone receptions ranked second in the league last season, while five of his six touchdowns came on end zone targets. It's unlikely he'll be anything more than a low-end WR3 for fantasy next season.

Free agent WR Adam Thielen is visiting the Panthers on Wednesday.
This is the first sign of interest we've seen reported in Thielen's market and it's a good fit as the Panthers are desperately in need of wideout help with D.J. Moore traded to Chicago. Thielen could profile as the No. 1 Panthers wideout for whoever they take at No. 1 overall in the 2023 draft. Currently the Panthers have a three-wide set of Terrace Marshall, Shi Smith, and Laviska Shenault Jr.

Panthers.com’s Darin Gantt believes Adam Thielen will lead the Panthers in receptions in 2023.
“Thielen is probably the favorite to catch more balls than anybody among that group of receivers,” Gantt said on a recent Rotoworld Football Show , breaking down Carolina’s pass-catching pecking order. “He’s going to be set up to catch a bunch of short touchdown passes this year.” Panthers head coach Frank Reich and team owner David Tepper have said Thielen’s precise route running should mesh well with Bryce Young. Gant said to expect Carolina’s passing attack to include plenty of shorter and intermediate passes — a potential boon for whoever is playing from the slot. Thielen, whose stats dropped off in 2022, could be an interesting PPR option in deeper formats if he indeed leads the Panthers in targets and/or receptions.
ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reports Adam Thielen (ankle) is “good to go” for Week 1 against the Falcons.
Thielen was listed as questionable after getting in a lone practice session this week. DJ Chark was ruled out on Friday. Thielen and rookie Jonathan Mingo will dominate the snaps at receiver for the Panthers. In a slow, low-scoring matchup with Atlanta, both wideouts project for WR3/4 numbers this week.
Adam Thielen caught two passes for 12 yards in Week 1 vs Atlanta.
Thielen was invisible despite WR DJ Chark being inactive. His two targets were tied for fifth on the team as rookie Bryce Young struggled to move the offense. Thielen came into the game questionable with an ankle injury and may not have been 100 percent. The Panthers could get Chark back next week, making Thielen a low-upside flex play vs the Saints.

Adam Thielen caught 7-of-9 targets for 54 yards and a touchdown in the Panthers’ Week 2 loss to the Saints.
Thielen was the only skill position player on the Panthers to get anything going. He didn’t put any explosive plays on tape, but Thielen served as a consistent outlet option for Bryce Young, who was constantly under pressure versus the Saints’ impressive pass-rush. He reeled in the touchdown with under two minutes to go and connected with Young for the ensuing two-point conversion. With Jonathan Mingo and DJ Chark failing to create separation and earn targets, Thielen will continue to be Young’s favorite target in Week 3 against the Seahawks.
