WR Adam Thielen - CAR (3 Viewers)

Is it time to start thinking of Thielen as the best WR in the league?

That route he ran on that 24 yard diving catch was insane good.
You are right...he has to be at least in the conversation. He just produces. A late bloomer that has obviously worked his rear off to get to this level. Hard not to root for.

It's just crazy how he makes DBs get off balance like he did at the top of that route on the 24 yard catch.

I am in 4 leagues and I swear I am going against Thielen in at least one league every week.  This guy destroys me!  I wish I owned him.

If I didn’t also have Gurley & Matty Ice, this dude would be carrying my team. Love me some Thielen.

As a Thielen owner I would reject any trade. In the league I have him we have a 100+ rec bonus, PPR. He’s the WR1 - why would I trade him for a big name with that kind of production?

never know.  Sometimes, people think the train has to come to the station and sell high earlier than they should.  inverse reason people won't sell a big name when they should.

It’s 6 straight 100+ games. Clearly he’s become Cousins #1 target.

I guess it doesn’t hurt to try, but it’d better be “name receiver + something” or I don’t see what the point is.

I know.  I was gonna offer OBJ and a throw in RB2, cause he has no depth at RB.  Again, it's a big name, who has been under-performing, but has a great track record of finishing in top 5.  If he declines, no harm.

I’m assume this is a redraft league and not Dynasty correct?

Beating myself up repeatedly for trading him before this season in PPR dynasty.  And all of my other WRs are underperforming so it hurts even more.  Got Lamar Jackson, Fitz, and a 2019 1st (likely 3-5 range) for him and thought I got a good deal.  Couldn't have been more wrong.

Man, I didn't see this coming.  I thought last year was the one magic year that people would be chasing for the next five, always to be crushed.  Wrong.

Wrong. Wrong. Wrong. Wrong.

I thought he'd have a big year but he didn't fall to me at the right place in any of my drafts. He's going to be a 1st round pick next year if he holds up.

At least I don't feel so alone in under rating Adam Thielen as this list of folks who know some things about football seem to still be doing so.

What makes a WR the best is a bit different for every person you might ask as well.

An interesting angle by Clay who seems to think that slot routes are not as important as outside routes. I am not sure I agree with that but I seem to recall reading something from pff making that argument. I am undecided about that, would need to think about it some more.

As I have mentioned before yards per target can be a way to compare receivers who are getting similar volume of targets and a independent way to measure which players are more efficient. All of the players mentioned in the article are great receivers and deserving of being considered the best. Yards per target is a way to try to measure their relative effectiveness.

Adam Thielen has been outstanding in this metric since he became a starter. WR average something like 8.4 yards per target and good seasons for these players will almost always be below 9 yards per target. 8.8 for example is above average and for a WR getting a lot of targets will usually be higher than their career average yards per target, or a 3 year average of yards per target, which if they are good will be maybe 8.6 or something.

Adam Thielen is averaging 9.2 yards per target this season. He averaged 9 ypt last season (on 142 targets) and averaged 10.5 yards per target in 2016 (didnt start 6 games).

The 3 year average for Adam Thielen right now is 9.4 yards per target.

Using the 3 year average eliminates the problem of small sample size which can be misleading with metrics like this.

Using the same 3 year average for the other WR argued as better than Thielen:

Julio Jones 10.2 yards per target

Antonio Brown 8.5 yards per target

AJ Green 8.5 yards per target

Mike Evans 8 yards per target

Odell Beckham 7.9 yards per target

DeAndre Hopkins 7.7 yards per target

So Julio Jones has been better than Thielen by this metric. Thats it.

And Thielen has outscored Julio in FF over at least the last 23 games......

Adam Thielen caught seven passes for 103 yards and a touchdown in the Vikings' Week 8 loss to the Saints.

Thielen went over 100 yards again this week. He also set an NFL record for the most catches in the first eight games of a season. Thielen's touchdown didn’t come until late in the fourth quarter on a goal-line pass from Kirk Cousins. It was another dominant effort from Thielen, but the story of the game was a costly red-zone fumble he lost that flipped the momentum for the Saints. Thielen has been playing at an MVP level this season and will remain a locked-in WR1 for Week 9 against Lions.

He should have had another TD earlier but Cousins didn't throw it to him. He was open and would have caught it. Easy throw too. Still another monster game. 5 games in a row with a TD.......

LOL, how many Thielens are out there who go unnoticed by major college programs and shuffled off by the NFL? It's amazing what he's accomplished. Its' a credit to the Vikes they just continued to promote talent. The NFL needs more of this.

I read some kind of core injury. He's probably playing and even tjough Thielen would sure get even more targets not sure the efficiency would be there.
Ah - yeah, missed practice with “undisclosed” - saw someone tweet that it was a maintenance day.  I haven’t seen any updates indicating he was in jeopardy of missing the week though.  CVS doesn’t even have a Red Cross on him.

Maybe after today’s reports come out that will change though.

He’s my WR2  in my other league, so hopefully he’s OK.
