WR George Pickens, DAL (2 Viewers)

Pickens might end up being the best WR in this class. Without the injury, he would've been a 1st-rounder. KC should've taken him, IMO. Pit got a steal.

I feel very fortunate to get Pickens at 1.14 in a tough league.

Would a man be crazy to consider taking him at 1.5 in a rookie dynasty draft if London is gone then (which I assume he will be)? Read nothing but good reports on him so far, and if not for the ACL injury and the shortened season last year, would have been a top pick at WR in this year's NFL Draft IMO.

Not crazy at all. I think you should be able to get him @ 1.06 after some combo of Hall, London, Wilson, Williams, Olave, but if you like him then I wouldn't risk trading down

The Athletic's Mark Kaboly reports WR George Pickens has been a "star" throughout Steelers training camp.

The second-round pick out of Georgia has reportedly dominated cornerbacks over the past two weeks, showing off his downfield catching ability and precise route running. "His hands are good, his speed is good, his ability to contort his body is good," Kaboly said. "Honestly, I’ve never seen a rookie this good this early." Pickens' camp domination could be related to Diontae Johnson missing most practices -- first with a contract "hold in," then with a leg issue. Chase Claypool also missed a week of training camp with a shoulder injury. Kaboly said Claypool's limited reps "haven't been overwhelming." A solid preseason could force Pickens -- who shaped up to be the top receiver in his draft class before a 2021 ACL injury -- into the Steelers' No. 2 wideout role behind Johnson. He should be drafted in deeper fantasy formats.

I’m a believer in Pickens but the 2022 Pittsburgh offense will severely cap upside. QB situation is uncertain and bottom 25% for FF and NFL quality. Many mouths to feed on low volume passing offense between Harris, Muth, DJ and Claypool. Realistically they’ll want to run first and second to protect the QBs. Going to see heavy doses of Harris and jet sweeps adding rush value to Claypool.

Bright side, expect the team to take shots downfield to keep defenses from overcrowding the LOS. Pickens has the skill and attitude to make plays. He will have some boom weeks but good luck figuring out which weeks to start him.

Agreed. Even if he's a transcendent talent - and he might be - this situation is far from ideal with major question marks at OL and QB. Plus he'd have to beat out Johnson or Claypool for targets, all while a rookie in the NFL. Redraft problems.

My question is what's his value in redraft? With Dionte and Claypool in front of him and a highly questionable QB room, is he worth a roster spot for this year?

And does the, seemingly amazing WR group in Pittsburgh make Trubisky (or Pickens...not Rudolph imo) a play in superflex & 2QB leagues in 2022?

I’m not sure Claypool has done enough — or has a good enough attitude — that he can stay in front of Pickens all year.

Claypool is a size/speed beast, but Pickens is the much more polished WR and catcher of the ball. He's also got decent size/speed himself.

He was a target of mine in my 3 dynasty league but I didn't get him anywhere, always seemed to go a pick or 2 before me (2nd round). I debated taking him at 1.10 in one league and took S Moore instead... if I could rewind the clock I might do it differently...

Picking at 12 in 2 dynasty leagues. Figured I’d be looking at Pickens vs Dotson. Now thinking Pickens won’t last.

This guy is so smooth. Reminds me of a young AJG.

His value is sky high right now but I am going to overpay for him everywhere.

Man, I have the 1.7 in my last remaining rookie draft next week so glad to hear that most think he’s in play there.
He might be, but uh, I would get that license number of that car that hit you while speeding on the way to like the 1.4 or 1.5.

Gotta be something like

Hall
Walker
London
Pickens
Wilson
Burks
Olave
Moore
etc.

Whether Pickens should be there because of camp hype is not really the answer, either. It's whether he is there. But you know that. Best of luck.

I will say this. I haven't heard one beat writer utter almost anything but "star in the league" and things like that. HYPE MASSIVE!

Pickens was once considered by many draft pundits as the top receiver in the class, before injuries derailed his collegiate career. He looks like the player we thought he could be following his freshman season at Georgia. I don't think it is a stretch to rank Pickens at the top of this class of receivers. I currently rank him only behind Drake London. It's not as if this is a meteoric rise in what should have been his value all along. Pickens should have NEVER been dropping behind the likes of Skyy Moore and Christian Watson, or any RB not named Hall or Walker. If you get Pickens outside of the first half of Round One, consider yourself extremely fortunate. Pickens is easily a top 4 pick for me.

@Steelersdepot

George Pickens only played almost 1,100 total snaps in college. Why point this out? Because he's still just scratching the surface on his route running and it will/should only get better. Now THAT is the scary part because the rest of his skills are natural.

That's the crazy nature of the NFL these days. Unless you have a completely clean bill of health, these scouts today will knock you down multiple pegs, coaches will make you work twice as hard to prove you can beat out out a 3rd or 4th rounder, any resume you've built on the field before the injury be damned. You see it every year.

I just did a quick Underdog best ball. He went in round 11, as the WR 56. Over guys like Chark, Golladay, Isaiah Mckenzie, Landry, and Robbie Anderson. Seemed WAY early...but Doubs went in the 12th so....

On the surface it does seem early but when you list the other options at WR, it doesn’t seem that bad to me. With any of those guys, including Pickens, you need a lot of things to break right for fantasy value.

This is the concern I have - Harris, Johnson, Claypool and Freiermuth are already there to command targets. Even if Pickens is all that, that’s a lot to overcome with this passing offense. Love the talent, but I’m not very bullish on his fantasy prospects beyond dynasty leagues.

Not so sexy in redraft. He's not a target.

In dynasty, he was undervalued in a lot of places. When guys are ranked similar, it's better to go with the guy with the better physical profile. Pickens was drafted behind SEVERAL WRs that were lesser physical specimens. People were taking guys ranked close to him, who would have to be an outlier to pay off.

He was really in the Moore/Watson/Dotson range, which means you weren't getting total outliers at that same rank. But you know that. I get what you're saying.

Just not quite outlier status, those guys.

With Ben at QB I would agree but new QB which pass catcher is in the best rhythm with QBs?

Some teams are going to look back and kick themselves. Christian Watson, Wan'Dale Robinson, John Metchie III, and Tyquan Thornton were all taken in the second round ahead of Pickens, and while the Chiefs didn't take Skyy Moore ahead of Pickens, they traded down from 50 to 54 to make the pick, missing out on Pickens, who went 52. ALL of those moves seemed insanely stupid at the time, and appear even worse now! smh
