WR Williams leaves on stretcher after blow to head

IRVING, Texas (AP)—Houston Texans receiver Harry Williams was taken off the field on a stretcher Friday night after being hit in the head during a collision with a teammate. He was trying to make a tackle on a kickoff return by the Dallas Cowboys.

Williams was face down on the field when the play ended. Medical personnel immediately called for a stretcher and the game was delayed for about 10 minutes while they tended to Williams.

The report provided in the press box was that Williams had a neck injury and was taken to a hospital. The extent of the injury wasn’t immediately known.

Williams’ face mask was removed and his head was immobilized when he was strapped to the stretcher and taken to an ambulance.

Williams was hurt after he reached and unsuccessfully tried to tackle Isaiah Stanback. After Williams slid off the runner and was falling to the ground, he collided with teammate Nick Ferguson, who was also trying to tackle Stanback. Ferguson got up and had no apparent injury.

The play occurred about 3 minutes into the game, on the ensuing kickoff after Houston capped the opening drive with a field goal. Stanback’s 44-yard return set up the Cowboys for a touchdown.

Williams spent most of last season on the Texans’ practice squad, playing in only two games. He is considered a long shot to make the team as a receiver, but has been one of Houston’s best special teams players in the preseason.
Hope it's not serious, or if it is, he can recover like Kevin Everett did.

At the time of the hit he was paralyzed below the neck but was alert. In the ambulance ride to the hospital he began to regain motion and control and now is "almost normal". He has a fracture of the C3 vertebrae and will have surgery this weekend to fuse it.

Sounds like he's going to be ok, thank the Lord.

 This one looked really bad. I'm glad to see he had movement. I was sure worried.

Great news. I was very relieved to see him talking on the stretcher. They had his arms strapped down so he wouldn't have been able to signal movement if he had it.

I saw this when it happened and just made me sick. I am thrilled to hear the guy will be ok. That said, he's having surgery to fuse together 2 vertabrae. Does that mean the kids career is over? I mean, obviously, that is very much not the main thing, but now that he/we know he'll have full motion again and be 'normal', that has to come up at some point. So is the kid done?

Probably not, although he certainly won't see a football field until this time next year. (That's assuming no significant lingering spinal cord injuries/nerve damage to go along with this). Simple fusion of two vertebrae in the neck costs nothing in terms of mobility.

Williams apparently had a successful surgery, but according to statements from the team, his playing career is indeed over due to the injury.
