I am on this guy in a big way, with a big assumption. I assume he comes at a discount. For a lot of reasons:

• No eye-popping production over a single season
• Physical traits are fine, but not exceptional
• Ton of WR this year
• He's a loose cannon, fair to think some teams will avoid. Smack talker, definitely a PIA to coaches

Production was never amazing however:
Frosh: leading WR for Georgia in the playoffs
Soph: Georgia's leading WR
Junior: Alabama's leading WR
Senior: Alabama's leading WR
Career: Led the class in YPTOE

One thing I love about this guy, is he carved out playing time everywhere, right away. Got on the field a lot at IMG ACademy as a soph, which is really rare. On the field at Georgia as a true freshman.

Curious. Didn't that happen back in 2022? As I recall, the explanation was that Burton was so frightened of the petite Tennessee fan, that he felt the need to strike her.

I understand that losing to a rival is emotional and kids make mistakes, but there was no accountability then, and still none. Burton has a reputation as immature and uncoachable based on more than just this incident.

Here's my utterly presumptive and assumptive opinion after listening to him in a few interviews and reading about his journey. He's one of those hyper-competitive athletes who thinks he's better than everyone else even if he isn't. He got that dawg in him. Steve Smith was like this. Hated Ochocinco getting higher ratings than him when they both played for the same community college in LA. Always played with a chip on his shoulder. It served him well. Burton is chippy on the field. He's that guy who gets 15 yards for taunting after smoking some fool. He's also really good and really young. He bounced all over the place always in moves to increase his chances of going pro. From Atlanta as a HS freshman to Florida to play for a national powerhouse as a sophomore. Didn't get the ball much so went back to Atlanta, but Georgia eligibility rules were going to cost him a year. So off to California where he became a star at Calabasas High. Then to Georgia which he left for Alabama to play with his Cali buddy, Bryce Young. Seems determined. Says it's all to put him in the best position for himself and his family. Seems sincere about this.

Saban put him in anger management after he stiff armed that female fan. She did run right up into his face. Not condoning it. Just sayin' after a tough road loss some fan charges you, meh, he reacted poorly, but it wasn't anything sustained. Just an open handed stiff arm to the side of her head as he kept walking off the field. It's not evidence that he's some wife beater. His maturity issues aren't the type that cause high speed accidents with rented Lambos. The two LSU WRs seem more that type. They're having fun. Burton is more the type to cause fights in training camp with competitive corners.

Brugler has him at WR17. He's better than half the guys ranked above him. His emotional competitiveness needs to be harnessed, but that might be a good thing. He's a very hard worker. He's dedicated to football and his family. His friends like him plenty. Fiery guy. If he falls he's gonna make a list of guys that went before him and show them all what for.

Nice write-up...appreciate it...sounds like he is dedicated more to himself and not the team...the stiff-arm to a female is very concerning...not in the "wife-beater" manner that you mentioned but simply that you may not be able to trust him to make smart decisions when he is under duress...kid definitely has talent but he needs to go to team with legit veteran leadership...put him in a rebuilding environment like New England with a rookie HC and probably a rookie QB and it could be bad news.

Hope there's not too much fire between him and Tee who he's clearly going to be competing with for snaps and targets.

The issue with Burton was never about his ability to play WR, but there are red flags about his maturity and coachability. He does not have a rap sheet (that I am aware of), so it is conceivable that the maturity issues are overblown a bit. Cincinnati is perceived as a good long-term destination for Burton, but he will need to earn a role behind Chase and Higgins. I have Burton in the WR 11-15 range among rookies, which speaks to the incredible depth of this class. Burton has tremendous upside if he gets and keeps his head on straight, but other WRs in that range are arguably safer (higher floor) options. (Roman Wilson, Ja'Lynn Polk, Javon Baker, Malachi Corley, Troy Franklin). I recently skipped on the opportunity to draft Burton with an early Rd. 3 pick. I may regret it, but the character concerns are real, imo.

His best season was last year where he put up 39rec for 798yds with 2 extra games (SEC championship and playoff game), which is okay I guess. But he did it as a 22 year old 4th year senior so that's pretty lousy for a breakout age, if we can really even call it a breakout. And the majority of that production came in one game (9-197-2 against Texas A&M).

Over the last 3 years he played 40 games and has eclipsed 100 yards receiving 4 times, and two of those were just barely. In 2022 he went 40rec for 677yds on an uncrowded WR corps of a Bryce Young led offense that threw for almost 4000 yards. He had zero 100 yard receiving games that year.

I'm not saying he won't be great but this narrative that he's this awesome WR that just had off the field issues has kind of gotten out of hand. He was Alabama's lead WR for 2 years (including a year where his QB was drafted 1st overall) and most people here probably hadn't even heard of him until this post-draft hype started picking up, if that gives you an idea of the kind of impact he was having week in and week out.

Not highlighted in your comments is that he averaged 20 yards per reception, a stat I used to separate him from his cohorts in the middle of the second round (along with his future prospects of starting in a Joe Burrow offense).

As for 2022, he did lead Alabama in receiving (he and WR Ja'Corey Brooks posted near identical receiving stats). Also, Alabama's passing yardage total dropped 1500 yards from 2021 to 2022. As a casual observer it seems Alabama changes offensive coordinators annually, so I chalk a lot of this up to team dynamics beyond Burton's control.

Hopefully not mixed in with fist fights with teammates lol though that's clearly in the range of outcomes. Somebody's going to have to take this kid under their wing. Or watch Rashee burn his career to the ground and learn something.
2024 in-season- He'll be the 3rd option with ~700 yards on ~80 targets. Mostly playing in the slot but mixing in some outside work giving the team some opportunities to move Chase and Higgins around to get mismatches. This seems like a best-case scenario, and I hope it works out that way. I think it is reasonable to hope for this type of career trajectory. Burton should come at a discount in fantasy drafts based on the bonehead factor, but I think that discount has been diminishing.

I absolutely do. Pride myself on it, it's a nice and fun challenge... I feel like I do a decent job, but you're gonna have some misses, of course. And I definitely also use other sources too, just to make sure Im seeing the whole picture...

I basically gave up on RBs tho, it's just too hard to tell.

Burton is a curious case... Shorter than most ppl like (doesn't bother me as much), good weight, decent build, SEC tested at 2 elite programs. The character stuff, I don't look into really... So avoid that. Very fast, very quick, smooth and can stop on a dime to cut.

Really good hands and tracks back to the ball instead of always letting it come to him. Nice awareness....

I don't think he's #1 material, but CIN knew that too... And what a spot to thrive, with Chase taking that #1 coverage. It's a dream landing spot, really...

Just got him today in one at this spot. Crazy draft, was able to get a lot of quality players at good spots (Pearsall 2.2, Sinnott 3.2 and Burton 3.4) and the obvious Nabors at 1.2

That's awesome. I also enjoy doing my own scouting. My process is probably too simple, and I'm probably not as good at it as you or a lot of others, but I do a decent job of finding hits. I've gotten better at picking out misses/busts.

I absolutely agree with you on Coleman. I may take Coleman ahead of him because the current perceived value is higher, but I'd be looking to sell Coleman for Burton+ or something along those lines before the season started.

With WR's, I'm always thinking/asking: Can you win the same way in the NFL?

Coleman: Struggled to separate. Had a lot of success by being bigger, faster, more athletic than the defense. That gap closes a lot in the NFL. He may very well pan out.

But people had similar concerns about Quentin Johnston this time last year. He had better draft capital. Went to a great landing spot. Was awful. The jury is still out, but considering some of the opportunities he had last year and how things went: I'm still not confident he becomes a major fantasy contributor.

QJ could bust and Coleman could be great. But I think it's a good cautionary tale of don't fall in love with the landing spot if you didn't love the player to begin with.

Why am I listening to puppet commentary on Jermain Burton?

Got this dude at the 3.10 yesterday in a 10 team 2QB draft. Ecstatic about that. Had a couple guys trying to get the pick from me when I was on the clock and I know one of them wanted Burton.

I think there is good reason for optimism for 2025, if, like you say, Burton can keep his head on straight. Tee Higgins has been a fringe top 20 WR, but expecting Burton to step in and duplicate those numbers might be lofty expectations.

Here is my perspective, which is entirely objective. I wish I could be more concise, but a comprehensive understanding of the superficial statistics is necessary before delving into deeper-level information.
2020: 10 GP, 27 rec, 404 yards, and 3 TDs on 44 targets
2021: 12 GP, 26 rec, 497 yards, 5 TDs on 35 targets

*Check game logs vs. college references, which have 14; he missed games at Auburn, Kentucky, and Florida.

2022: 13 GPs, 40 recs, 677 yads, and 7 TDs on 64 targets
2023: 13 GP, 39 rec, 798 yards, 8 TDs on 55 targets
Georgia had less than 2500 passing yards all year, throwing 304 times, and 44 (14.5%) of those went to the freshman in 2020. Keanis Jackson (RS-SO) and George Pickens received more reception than JB.

In 2021, Georgia had 3778 passing yards and threw it 406 times. They had freshman Brock Bowers, Darnell Washington, Ladd McConkey, Adonai Mitchell, and Keanis Jackson returning. George Pickens was coming back from an ACL tear. In this offense, fighting for snaps and touches was crazy. This is before seeing the run game with 542 rushes for the year. Despite all the talent at WR, the run game comes first. Maybe you made the argument that he wasn’t as good? Despite being fifth on the team in receptions, he led WRs in receiving yards. The whole WR room had a total of 209 targets. As a result, 51.5% of targets went to WRs. Overall, this means he achieved an 8.6% target share, which is low.

In the three games Burton missed, Georgia passed 60 times, so it is fair to adjust to 10.1% for the games he participated in. Still, that’s low. The two WRs who had more receptions than Burton were Adonai Mitchell and Ladd McConkey, who each had 58 and 39 targets, respectively, for games they played at 14.2% and 9.6%, and Brock Bowers had 80 (19.7%).

When comparing NFL average targets to wide receivers across all teams, the highest percentage was 68%, and the average is 60%. Georgia passed 51.5% to WRs. For perspective, Cincinnati's Burtons team had 58% last year. Passing the ball is 53.3% of the play type, with a 10-year average of 54.5%. Georgia passed 43.7% of the time. The wide receiver who leads the team in yards typically has an average target share of 22.3%.

In 2022, he transferred to... Alabama, another program that did not pass. However, wouldn't the first overall pick and a successful QB in Bryce Young make a difference? Well, let's see... Alabama threw 438 times. Burton's target share was 14.6%, with 64 targets. He also led the team in receiving with 677 yards and seven TDs. Alabama passed for 3660 yards, resulting in a dominator rating of 18.4%, a number we aim to improve. Though that’s a very fair dominator rating, Alabama ran 458 times and only passed 48.9%. Remember the comparison with heavy-run teams mentioned earlier; This isn't the case in the NFL—unless you're Arthur Smith. Alabama passed to WR’s

The lowest target count for the top 5 wide receivers was 35. Wow, but we also know that Alabama values its depth and high-profile signings, despite their lack of national championship success. Alabama at least throws to the wide receiver more often, with 282 targets, or 64.4% of the total. This resulted in Burton reaching 22.7% of all WR targets, and we're getting close to respectability!

So Bryce Young is drafted, and the 2023 season has Jalen Milroe as QB1 for my main Jermaine! Bama passes for 325 passes and 3086 yards... Reminiscent of the Georgia dawg days, Burton continues to lead Bama in yards and has 8 touchdowns, ranking first on the team. He had 25.9% of the team's receiving yards and 16.9% of the targets. But Alabama only passed 38.4% of the time, so it DRASTICALLY HOLDS any receiving game numbers back …

Ugh.. adjusted WR contribution though was 225 of the targets for 69.2%. Therefore, Jermain Burton's contribution was 24.4%, which is consistent with his performance in 2022. Although he missed a game vs. Kentucky! What a coincidence! However, during that game, Bama passed 25 times for a total of 285 yards, which, when adjusted for games, resulted in another change in the numbers! His target share increased to 18.3%, and his dominator rating increased to 28.4%! The only group I am doing this for is his last year, to save me a couple minutes. The WR group contributed 2266 yards to the receiving game, or 73.4% of the total yards. This shows Burton's rise, accounting for 35% of all WR yards.Bond had 78 targets, which was 23 more than Burton, but he still had 130 fewer yards with an additional game.

People should be bullish on Burton. He went to Cincinnati and filled Tyler Boyd's role perfectly for this upcoming year. He is an impressive athlete and has the potential to develop into a strong wide receiver for several years after this season. He is going to be of incredible value early on for anyone taking him. Additionally, he has an impressive athletic profile, with a 9.57 RAS. For a WR, the main points are that he is above the 90th percentile for his explosiveness in the broad, vertical, and 10-yard split. So he is fast, quick, and gets moving fast? Check, check, and check.It will not surprise me to see him break 800 yards as a rookie.

He’s been getting some good press lately. I could see a ceiling as top 20 next year, but only if he’s the next Higgins opposite Chase. There is a path to that.

Solid WR2-4 is probably a pretty reasonable expectation for the range of outcomes for 2024 production.

I grabbed him 3.02 in a 16 teamer, 34 overall.

There’s certainly a path to top 20. But I just can’t expect that from a player closer to #20 of the rookie wide receivers than overall.
