WR Johnny Wilson, PHI (1 Viewer)

6’7 tall, late round pick by Philly, good speed for the size but questionable hands. UDFA darling after rookie draft has run.

Nothing stopping him from being the #3 WR as a rookie.

Not a lot of 6-7 230 pounders who run 4.5. Most of them are playing forward in the NBA.

We’ll see how it shakes out, but I can see him getting very limited reps, like deep red zone and jumbo packages. And not very many targets.

My impression (from 2 media available OTAs, so take it with a grain of salt) is Campbell has the inside track for WR3. Ainias Smith is a promising rookie, too.

Nobody has really seen enough to say what the Kellen Moore/Sirianni hubrid Offense is gonna look like, and there’s still 100 days until kick off. A lot of speculation they are in the market for a FA WR, too.

Oh yeah, not saying Wilson is gonna get the job or anything, just saying Campbell isn't standing in anyone's way if they are any good.

The Eagles have used speed guys for that #3 WR to stretch the field. IMO, Campbell and Smith have the inside track for that slot WR.

I think Wilson will be on the PS this year with the thought of converting him to a TE.

Was about to say that it's odd to not see any Harold Carmichael references or comparisons in this thread, but then I realized he retired 40 years ago.

Think I better go ahead and take my Metamucil now before the 6pm syndicated airing of Matlock begins.

As a cowboy fan, I had a lot of respect for Carmichael. How do you cover someone so damn big.

Have they purposefully used speed guys there, or did that just happen to be the highest guy on the depth chart?

I don't see Wilson moving to TE. I forget if it was Sirianni or Roseman but right after the draft, they quickly went out of their way to say Wilson was a WR.

With Kellen Moore now calling the plays, I think AJ Brown is gonna be spending a lot of time in the slot. Moore's pass concepts tend to focus on getting the #1 WR in motion and in the slot constantly, and we've seen that with Amari Cooper, CeeDee Lamb, and Keenan Allen last year. I don't think the #3 WR this year is necessarily the slot guy. I thought that was why they signed Parker, was to be an outside #3. I don't think Parker's retirement changes too much.

I'm not in their personnel meetings, but their last slot guy Quez Watkings ran a 4.35 40. They kept going to him even though Zaccheaus looked good, their reasoning, Watkins stretched the field.

Here is what Sirianni said about him in the article:

“I know this, when his speed is on the field, it changes us as an offense. So we'll make the correction. It's just the way football is. There's a lot of emotions in it and like I said, that's our culture.”

“What is unknown about Quez, what can't ever show up on a stat sheet with Quez, is his ability to stretch the field,” Sirianni said. “His speed is real. And so, there's a lot of things that happen where maybe it's a slant that A.J. catches where Quez clears the middle to make it a cleaner throw.

“So Quez's speed brings a real factor.”

Then they go out and sign Parris Campbell who ran a 4.31 40 and John Ross who ran a 4.22 40, and I'm reading the tea leaves here that the Eagles want that 3rd WR on the field to be fast to stretch the field. They had a slower big body guy under Sirianni (Julio Jones) and they used him mostly in the red zone.

EDIT: Re: Parker, I never though Parker would make the team to be honest. It was a low-risk/high-reward signing on a vet to take a shot they might be able to give them something. They did it last year with Penny.

Johnny Wilson continues to get work with the 1s. This is not just camp rotation-type stuff — he's in the mix.

I asked Sirianni about WR3 tonight, he mentioned Wilson. (Other names thrown in there — Parris Campbell, John Ross, Britain Covey.)

As I wrote earlier in week, might not be one guy. Eagles could mix it up based on what they want on that play — Wilson brings size, Campbell excels at YAC, Covey's route running is a plus, Ross brings elite speed.

@32BeatWriters
“Rookie receiver Johnny Wilson has pushed his way into the competition for the No. 3 wide receiver spot. The 6-foot-6, 228-pound Florida State product has been getting work with the starters the last couple of practices. Wilson, a sixth-round pick, has drawn some targets from Jalen Hurts in the red zone, where he can use his size to his advantage.”

6‘6“ rookie receiver Johnny Wilson looked great today. He is getting some first team reps because Parris Campbell is out. Johnny caught a TD from Jalen Hurts and he also ran a great route off the line of scrimmage. He was also very effective blocking.
