WR Kendrick Bourne, NE (1 Viewer)

Seems like a whole lot of mediocrity on the SF WR roster but Bourne finally broke through vs Titans. Obviously Jimmy G is elevating the talent on the field, but is there anything to see here? All I've ever seen of him was last week, but he really looks the part. Obviously not any real pedigree as UDFA, but depending on what SF does in FA, there could be a starting WR job up for grabs in SF. He's realistically a deep stash but no reason he couldn't make the year 2 leap and have a lights out offseason and challenge for more playing time. He doesn't exactly have world beaters in front of him.

Thoughts from SF homers?

Not a homer, and I've paid little to no attention to those WR's all year but anyone who creates a spark there seems to be in good position for next year.  I wouldn't imagine they take multiple WR's in the draft so Bourne and Goodwin I expect to be at worst the #2 and #3 for 2018.

Did Garcon only sign a one year deal?

I looked at this guy earlier this year.

Should be a solid backup. 40 time of 4.68 is slow. Odds are that they draft a starter. Garcon will be back for 1 more year.

Oof. Didn't realize he timed that slow. Explains why he was at a small school and undrafted. I was able to grab on waivers and will hold through season.

I'm interested in owning cheap assets in the SF passing game. Think there will be real value there in 2018. Maybe not WR/TE1, but solid fringe starters with upside.

Yep

I picked him up a few weeks ago and dropped a week or so ago, just to see him do well.

I don't think there's anything but here but maybe depth.

Trent Taylor JAG?
I like Taylor but he's likely rostered on most leagues. But I think the SF passing game will have enough yards to go around.

I don't think anyone would be shocked to see Jimmy throw for close to 5k given his current showing.

Goodwin was already rostered in my leagues so I grabbed Taylor. Holding for now.

Totally forgot about Garcon honestly but even the reminder of him doesn't change my view.  I don't see Garcon having much left in the tank.  He might be used as a security blanket for Garopp but I'd be surrounding their new QB with young talent if I had that choice rather than old guys who are journeymen.

This Bourne Identity was off my radar until a couple weeks ago where I noticed he was picked up off waivers in a couple of my dynasty leagues. His numbers for last week then caught my eye: 4 catches for 89 yards out of 6 targets. I did some research and found the below article which prompted me to take a flyer in all of my leagues where I still had some blind bid money, getting him for $3 or less in most (And I might have been the only bidder). He seems to be developing a good rapport with Jimmy G.

Anyway, here is a Sept 15, 2017 article profiling Bourne by Ikaika Valeria for the 49ers hub.

https://www.the49ershub.com/single-post/2017/09/15/Valeria-Why-WR-Kendrick-Bourne-made-the-53-man-roster

Valeria: Why WR Kendrick Bourne made the 53-man roster?

S Lorenzo Jerome and RB Matt Breida weren’t the only undrafted free-agent finds for the 49ers. San Francisco signed WR Kendrick Bourne, from Eastern Washington, following the 2017 NFL Draft. The 6-foot-1, 203 pound receiver had a productive career at EWU. He finished his collegiate career with 211 receptions, 3,130 yards, and hauled in 27 touchdowns. Those are impressive numbers, but I sure you’ve never heard of him until your phone buzzed with the 49ers' UDFA list after the draft.

Get to know Bourne from his own words from his interview with Joe Fann, 49ers Senior Reporter. “I’m a competitive athlete. I’m a humble guy and a hard worker. I thrive in my route running. I’m a good separator. You’re not going to get a lot of space in the NFL, defensive backs are so good. I’m quicker than fast, and so I feel like I can get out of my breaks quicker than others.”

I’m sure you’ve heard of his highly touted teammate and Rams' third-round pick, WR Cooper Kupp. Bourne sat in Kupp’s shadow during his time at EWU, but he called it, “humbling” and “taught me to not be big headed and play for my team.” One surprising fact is that Bourne was just as important to Eastern Washington’s high flying no huddle offense as Kupp. They formed one of the most dynamic duos in FCS history. They combined for 481 receptions, 9,594 yards, and 100 touchdowns over the span of four years together.

Due to the NFL rule that prohibits rookies from joining offseason programs until classes at their college have ended. Bourne had to make a name for himself during the 49ers last day of organized team activities. He established himself early as a smooth route runner with soft hands. Kyle Shanahan put it in his own words, “He’s got a natural ability to separate and he’s got good hands.”

Bourne’s ability to separate from defensive backs were on full display during the 49ers first preseason game against the Kansas City Chiefs. He hauled in a 46-yard touchdown reception and then on the two-point conversion, he out jumped the Chiefs DB for an impressive fade route to tie the game. He finished the game with four receptions, 88 yards, and one touchdown.

He’s caught the 49ers coaching staff eyes by his YAC ability. “Kendrick is the most underrated receiver I have coached. His yards after catch rank among the best in the country in any college division”, said EWU receivers coach, Nick Edwards.

That trait is what earned him a roster spot over Jeremy Kerley and others. Everyone thought his ceiling was the 10-player practice squad, but his calling is much higher. His potential in Shanahan’s offense is one to watch.

for teams that carry JimmyG ......... yeah he's a must have WR IMO

the risk / reward for a QB/WR combo that excels is just too good to pass up

7 catches for 71 today. 10, lemme repeat that, TEN TARGETS.

Sign of something? Granted it's Beathard, but if he keeps playing well he'll move up the depth chart regardless.

Saw something abt the 9ers looking to trade garçon, probably not much of a market for him but hopefully it was because Bourne has looked good in practice and they want him to get more in game reps. Certainly looked up to the part today

Every year when the 53 man rosters are set I take a quick peek at the WR/RB groups to see if there are any interesting flyers in there. I really wasn't aware of Bourne last season, but when I sifted through the rosters this year he caught my eye as maybe being worth a flyer in deep leagues. I've been stashing him and picking him up where I can. I've actually been able to get him everywhere by now.

I'm not going crazy with optimism just yet, but he looks to be a decent athlete. Not a speed burner, but decent frame and quick/fluid. Maybe comparable to someone like Stevie Johnson. I felt Quinton Patton also had similarities to Johnson and it never quite happened for him, but if you've got the open roster space and Bourne is out there then it can't hurt to spin the wheel.

SF wide receiver position seems similar to GB in regards to young talent that could start producing. Like GB it may be hard to identify in the early stages who will have the most value. Dante Pettis, Richie James, and Kendrick Bourne (and maybe Trent Taylor) all have promise. It should be pretty cheap to buy at least one of those lottery tickets, just not sure which one to go with. I still think Pettis has the best shot but he has been pretty quiet lately.

I don't believe the best SF receiver is on the team yet. These guys are all ham & eggers.

Kendrick Bourne caught 4-of-8 targets for 42 yards and one touchdown in the 49ers' Week 10 loss to the Seahawks.

Bourne got off to a piping-hot start in this one with a 10-yard touchdown grab and multiple targets early, but he sagged back to Earth with a bad drop and a catchable ball that tipped off his hands for a Seahawks interception. Bourne later added a two-point reception. He was funneled more looks than normal in this one with both George Kittle and Emmanuel Sanders out. Bourne isn't someone to chase in fantasy ahead of Week 11 against Arizona

Kendrick Bourne caught 4-of-6 targets for 31 yards and one touchdown in the 49ers' Week 11 win over the Cardinals.

Bourne has scored in three straight games, but he remains off the fantasy radar outside of the deepest of leagues. He's deep down the list for touches in this offense, but Jimmy Garoppolo seems to have an attraction to him in the scoring area.

Kendrick Bourne caught 3-of-4 targets for 18 yards and two touchdowns in the 49ers' Week 14 win over the Saints.

Bourne is a favorite of Jimmy Garoppolo's in the red zone thanks to his 6'1/190 frame, and it paid off in this one with a pair of red-area scores. Bourne has five touchdowns over his last five games but hasn't topped 42 yards in that span. Bourne is a TD-or-bust WR5 with those scores being wholly unpredictable.

Kendrick Bourne caught 2-of-4 targets for 42 yards in the 49ers' Super Bowl LIV loss to the Chiefs.

Bourne was a valuable piece of depth for the NFC champion 49ers, posting a 30/358/5 line as injury and ineffectiveness made it difficult for coach Kyle Shanahan to sort out his receiver corps. Bourne did commit the occasionally miscue, most notably in a horrid Week 10 performance. The 2017 UDFA will be a restricted free agent in March. He will likely be tendered a contract offer, but it is not a guarantee.

ESPN's Nick Wagoner believes Kendrick Bourne has "probably been the 49ers' most consistent receiver" in training camp.

Per Wagoner, Bourne continues to display a "knack for getting open in the red zone." Nine of Bourne's 88 catches over the past two seasons have found the end zone. Bourne would ideally be a reserve, but widespread injuries in the Niners' receiver corps mean that, at worst, he will open the year in three-wide sets. De facto No. 1 duties are not outside the realm of possibility if Deebo Samuel (foot) isn't ready for the opener.

49ers placed WR Kendrick Bourne on the reserve/COVID-19 list.

Bourne tested positive a day before the 49ers are scheduled to play the Packers. The game remains on for now, but there's still a chance it gets moved.  Bourne is out at least this week and could remain sidelined through the 49ers' bye. It's another blow to an offense that will be missing multiple starters in Week 9.

49ers placed Kendrick Bourne on the reserve/COVID list.

Bourne initially tested positive only 24 hours before the team squared off against Green Bay in Week 9 and was actually probed by the NFL and NFLPA for potentially not "wearing a face covering as required by the COVID-19 rules." This episode clearly isn't close to being through with since Bourne was placed back on the team's COVID list Monday afternoon.

thread title change, @tombonneau

Kendrick Bourne caught 1-of-3 targets for 17 yards in the Patriots' Week 1 loss to the Dolphins.

Making his Patriots debut, Bourne played fewer snaps than fellow free agent additions Hunter Henry and Jonnu Smith. Two tight ends instead of three receivers should be a frequent occurrence for the Pats this season. Coach Bill Belichick is going to like Bourne's rough-and-tumble game, but it is hard to see it translating into re-draft fantasy value.

thread rename reminder,  @tombonneau

Kendrick Bourne caught 3-of-4 targets for 34 yards in the Patriots' Week 9 win over the Panthers.

Bourne's catches and yards actually led New England's wide receivers on an afternoon where the Pats rode the run game to an easy road victory. Despite that fact, Sunday marked the fifth straight game Bourne caught five-or-fewer passes. There is no volume here, and without volume, upside is difficult to come by unless you're a game-breaker. Bourne is no such thing. The Browns are on tap for Week 10.

Kendrick Bourne caught 7-of-8 targets for 77 yards and two touchdowns in the Patriots' Wild Card loss to the Bills.

Part of the Patriots’ skill position spending spree in free agency, Bourne easily out-produced each of Hunter Henry, Jonnu Smith and Nelson Agholor on his way to a 55/800/5 regular season statline as he appeared in all 17 games. As was the case in San Francisco, Bourne displayed tough hands and made some big catches in the red zone. He was a dangerous YAC man, checking in 20th amongst receivers in yards after the catch. Bourne is already at his NFL ceiling, but he should remain a useful real-life player for 2022, one who will operate as a mid-range WR4 in fantasy.

NBC Sports Boston's Tom Curran has labeled Kendrick Bourne his "biggest disappointment" of Patriots camp.

It's notable because Curran had previously speculated Bourne could play a Deebo Samuel-type role in what he expects to be more of a Kyle Shanahan-type system following the departure of former OC Josh McDaniels. "Bourne was a house-a-fire in the first couple of practices but his output tapered when the pads came on," Curran observed. Bourne was "bounced" from a pair of practices this week, once for fighting and the other for "not being ready to go." It would appear as if Bourne is getting lost in the shuffle of this crowded group.

Bourne was mostly AWOL last camp and then picked it up several notches in the regular season. I don’t expect him to disappear in the offense.

Tom E. Curran is as good as there is so when he makes this observation it is something to pay attention to...I have heard it elsewhere from other solid media sources as well...on the flip-side everyone seems really impressed with Parker and Agholor seems to be stacking good practices together...between Parker, Bourne, Meyers, Thornton and Agholor this may turn into a form of a WRBC.
