WR Michael Thomas, Free Agent (2 Viewers)

Jarvis Landry has led his team in receptions every season in his 8 year career.  Only 2 WR's have more catches than him since he joined the league (DeAndre & Julio).  He is being overlooked by the ghost of WR past and the ghost of WR future.
Wow. Great post. I totally overlook Landry but I’ll give him a 2nd look now. Thanks.

Sounds more impressive than it is, he’s top 3 in targets in that time period too and played more regular season games than anyone else. 23rd in ypr over that time, he basically was a very good volume compiler that stayed healthy most of his career.

I say was because there clearly was little interest in him by other teams as he remained unsigned until mid-May. He “led” his team with 52 receptions and 520 receiving yards last year in 12 games. 72 for 840 the year before. Guy was under rated much of his career but he was still just a very good possession receiver and has declined, now he’s turning 30 and on a team that was bottom of the league in passing yards and attempts last year. There’s opportunities with MT a total question mark and a rookie the only competition but Landry is also not the guy he used to be.

With an ADP around mid-10th round in a 12-teamer, Jarvis could lead his team once again.  And he is generally going rounds after MT and Olave.

The whole Saints situation is very interesting.  From Thomas to Kamara to the transition from the previous coach/qb to the current duo. Along with Cleveland the team to really watch.

Cleveland will be terrible with Brisset and limited passcatchers...like watching paint dry....all due respect to Chubb and Kareem.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports there is "some optimism" that Michael Thomas (ankle) will be cleared early in training camp.

Thomas is recovering from an ankle injury that he suffered in 2020. He missed all of 2021 because of lingering issues related to the ankle. Reports have generally been positive on his outlook for the upcoming season. Fantasy drafters have been hesitant to bet on Thomas this summer, but the risk-takers will be rewarded if Thomas is a full-go by Week 1. Even with Jarvis Landry and Chris Olave taking targets off the table, Thomas would project as a high-end WR2 if we knew he was completely healthy.

There is a potential outcome where Thomas is the steal of the draft here.  I suspect his ADP is about to see a steady climb over the coming weeks.

I am wondering though if he winds up being a bit of preseason fools gold.  If we acknowledge that the last time he was healthy, Brees was still...Brees; completed close to 75% of his passes with a 27/4 TD ratio, while missing 5 games.  Overall, Saints QB's produced a 4431/36/6 line.  Also, the WR2 on that team was Ted Ginn (30/421/2).

Kamara missing time would be a boon for Thomas.  At the same time, the WR corps much deeper and Winston isn't Brees.

People will point you to how he did with Jameis. Right or wrong, and a small sample size.

Or how he did without Brees, which was shockingly good.

Not to mention Jameis passed for over 5100 yards in 2019.

I wouldn't worry about the QB play. When he's young and healthy, Thomas is a stud who'd put up great stats with any QB.

What I'd worry about is whether Thomas can stay young and healthy for more than a few weeks at a time.

ESPN's Mike Triplett reports that Saints WR Michel Thomas "looked fluid and had no noticeable braces or wrapping around the left ankle" at training camp.

Triplett notes that Thomas "participated in every portion of practice except for full-team drills." So while Thomas' ankle rehabilitation is still ongoing to a degree, the 29-year-old is beginning to look like a strong bet to be healthy for Week 1. Thomas last played football in 2020, a season that he struggled through after spraining his left ankle. The injury necessitated surgery in 2021, causing Thomas to miss the entire season. Thomas won't be the player he was at his peak in 2018, but he looks like a bargain in current drafts.

I think he settles in the third/fourth round depending on format.
squarely in the high floor wr1 high ceiling wr2 territory. any thoughts on his actual performance for the year if he plays every game? looking for opinions on his upside, already understanding and accepting the risks of the downside.

I think he's healthy and I think he's the best WR on the roster.  That being said, being out of football for a few years doesn't help.

I'll say 90/1050/8.   Plenty of room to go up or down from there.

He's never NOT produced when healthy, regardless of the QB (which yes, was mostly Brees) I think his owners who held on shall be rewarded nicely this year.

Saints coach Dennis Allen said that WR Michael Thomas (ankle) "is going to be ready to go" when the season starts.

Or, in Allen's direct words, "when the ball kicks off for real." This isn't a surprise and it's been trending that way for a while, even as Thomas was one of several Saints held out of Saturday's preseason opener. But it's good to hear in very definitive terms from the head coach that drafters can feel confident selecting Thomas.

Saints coach Dennis Allen said that Michael Thomas sat out practice with "a little bit of a hamstring" injury.

Oh boy. Hard to know exactly how to parse these comments based on this just being the first day of practice that Thomas is missing, but obviously this is quite concerning for someone who missed all of last season on account of injuries. This will be one we'll have to monitor heavily over the next few days heading into the last week of the preseason. If this is more major than it sounds, Chris Olave figures to be the major beneficiary.

This takes a little steam out of high I was willing to reach for him.
What is his current value? I was trying to get him from owner who also has Olave figured early 2023 2nd would be good ... he came back with a late 1st but he would include a mid-3rd. I just don't see him as a 1st Round value.

Maybe it's just me, but I love this type of news for a guy like Thomas. Most will overreact...and will treat this as a 'here we go again' situation. But the seasons start is still 20 days away. Allen described it in almost a throwaway fashion and I'm sure in preseason, for a guy whose gone thru the injury travails that Thomas has, erring on the side of caution is 100% prudent.

Good question and his value likely varies a ton owner to owner. Just from what I've heard from a redraft perspective, some people see him as a top 20 WR for the year and others pretty much him on the do not draft list.

I tend to shy away from soft tissue injuries in preseason. They can really linger. Also, I don't trust teams when it comes to injuries right now. I just looked and August 15, 2021 Nola.com reported that Payton felt Thomas was ahead of schedule with his recovery from ankle surgery. We know now Thomas wasn't at all ahead of schedule and was actually way far behind. So far behind that Thomas only just began team drills August 6th. He made it <2 weeks before getting hurt. I am nervous.

I am a little worried myself and have essentially taken Thomas off my board in my live leagues.

What I mean by that: My live leagues are almost all Saints homers, and most of us are waving off this hamstring news as Allen being super-careful, totally confident that Thomas will be 100% on opening day.

And that's probably right. Still, the upshot is that in a Saints-homer league, Thomas will not be gotten at an injury-reduced price. Someone will take him in the mid-2nd round to pair him with one of the top RBs they got in round 1. However, I see him as value at the 3/4 turn or later in a 12-team redraft. Therefore ... off my board unless he falls to my pick in the fourth. Won't happen.

The Athletic's Larry Holder writes that Michael Thomas' hamstring injury "doesn't sound serious."

Holder does allow that "the injury will have to be monitored." There are a couple weeks before the regular season opener for Thomas to get right, and assuming the hamstring injury isn't serious, we'd probably put him on the optimistic side of questionable. The fact that Thomas has a lengthy recent injury track history clouds the situation and makes the hamstring injury still feel slightly concerning.

He's back. Gotta like a guy who has the record for most receptions in a season. From my understanding, the OC from when he set that record is still there. Interested that he's getting drafted in the same range as Hopkins and it's a tough call. I've heard people say that "Jameis Winston can't throw a slant".

Bro, homie won a Heisman he can get the ball to Michael Thomas. As WR2, he could be a league winner. I think WR2 is a spot you can afford to take a risk at.

Very cautiously optimistic about Thomas, mostly because I have him in 2 dynasty leagues and could really use the help. In redraft probably staying away unless he drops a bit, then I'll be a sucker once again.

Oh, and:

“Jack Torrance thought: Officious little #####"

How comfortable is everyone starting him week 1? Glowing reports, but no game reps

I'm fortunate to have three guys in the 10-20 range besides Thomas so I'm going to wait a week and see how it goes. My concern is more with Winston than Thomas, and if the coaching staff allows him to throw it enough. My gut tells me he's going to lock on to Thomas because the types of routes he runs will allow Winston to make short safe throws.

Going with Sutton over Thomas in one league, Gabe Davis over him in another, and starting Thomas over guys like D Parker and K Golladay in a 3rd, so I'm waiting unless I have no choice.

Depends on if he practices with no issues. If he does that I'll start him in my flex. I'm fortunate enough to have Lamb, AJ Brown, and Gabriel Davis in my 3 WR spots. If not I'll go a different direction. Probably Kareem Hunt.

Thrilled to have Thomas as my WR3 behind Kupp and Sutton. He has WR2 upside for sure. I've targeted him in every draft.
