WR Odell Beckham, Jr., Free Agent (3 Viewers)

i'll be the "moron" to take him in the first round next year. not sure who to rank in front of him?
As I said a week or two back, he seems to rise a half a round in potential ADP each week. After this week, he has to be middle to late 1st round at worst and very likely the #1 wr off the board. We've seen the week to week consistency to indicate a very high floor and his ceiling can be things we've never seen before. I'll happily take that "risk".

he's not the #1 wr.

He's a WR1. I'm not ready to anoint him king of the heap just yet. Every D will focus on stopping ODB next season. They will double team him and take away his game. ODB will have to adjust and we will see if he can. It is very likely that he cools off next season. Just because no one can keep this up in the NFL.

PPG its A.Brown by a nose, then Beckham .... but overall? Yeah, you'd have to consider Beckham the #1 WR off the board.

His catch % is just incredible

you don't think they were trying to do this already? a division with the eagles, redskins and cowboys. I know defense can change every year but have to admit it doesn't get much better there.

how would you rank them in a ppr?

antonio brown has a good case for #1.

Love how people can't bash him on his talent anymore so they have moved onto bashing his work ethic/attitude with no evidence.HJ
Haters gonna hate, man.

The only receivers that I'd take over Beckham are Dez and Antonio Brown. Yes, even over MegaTron.

No hating. I think there are many guys who are arguably the top tier of WR... Calvin, DT, Dez, AB, ODB, Julio, AJ Green... Of these guys I am most comfortable with players who have done it more than one year. That's all I'm saying. If you can't at least acknowledge the risk, then you are the opposite of a hater. What's that called??? Haha

I agree. There was nobody on the Giants that scared defenses this season other than Odell, with Cruz gone. You could excuse a couple of good games on him being overlooked, lack of film on him or not game planned for. But with so many great games, all the while getting the attention of the opponents best DBs. Randle didn't need to be doubled. The running game didn't require defenses to neglect the passing threat.

Odell is one of those guys that needs to be double covered, and even with that he'll still burn defenses. So they'll have to triple him sometimes. If Cruz recovers, they add a talented WR or TE I think will help Odell because it will limit what attention defenses can give him.

Maybe for the last couple of games

Would love to see him go against Seattle. That's the true litmus test for a receiver, imo.
:lmao: :lmao:
:goodposting:
What's so funny? I haven't gotten the chance to watch much football this year. So he played Seattle and tore them up. He's the next Jerry Rice, I'm with the program now.
I almost believe you're fishing us all...almost.
I couldn't tell you any other of the 11 teams Beckham played this year. I didn't think he played Seattle, I was wrong. Turns out he did and if he can produce against Seattle, then he can produce against anyone.I'm on board now.

Kudos to the peanut gallery for bringing me up to speed. I clearly have been paying less attention than you guys.
Uh...hate to break it to you bud, but YOU are the peanut gallery.

I didn't see anything special on that 63 yard catch today. Real bad defense.

Love his circus like catches and he will feast on weaker corners. But I have a fairly vivid vision of him getting wrecked going up for a one handed snag.Would love to see him go against Seattle. That's the true litmus test for a receiver, imo.
He did. He beat Sherman several times.
So he's the next Jerry Rice?
Solid discussion tactics here.
Ha, thanks.

I'm just trying to get to the root of this situation. I haven't seen him play
Go away

As an OBJ owner in a few dynasty leagues I had no choice but to sell. He's been incredible this year but people thinking that's he's a top 5 wr are jumping the gun. He'll regress next year. Plus, if you want to put someone in the AJ Green/Julio class you have to be 100% sure. Even if everything was even on the field, he seems to have some knucklehead factor to him. Is he going to go to work this offseason or does he think he's made it and go out and party every night? Too risky at his current value, which I expect to only rise in the offseason.

My man love continues to grow. You think at some point he needs to slow down but he doesn't. Talent, drive, consistency...he's got it all. I'm sorry that his season is over. I love watching him play.
Yep I'm not a Giants fan by any stretch but have OBJ on my redraft team (won me the league) and watching OBJ in every Giants game after he got back was easily the most exciting thing to watch this season in the NFL imo.

How is he a knucklehead?

I don't think anyone expects him to match his place this year for all of next year. He could have a fairly significant decline and still be one of the top scoring WRs though.

Jumping the gun is 75% of my dynasty strategy.

I hope you got good value on those transactions. I'm one for tempering expectations about rookies, or even breakout players, but I will say this guy is truly special (and I owned and watched J.Gordon the last couple of years). I will say to all that have not watched him every game, you have missed the emergence of an ascendant talent. Will he live up to what he has shown in the last 3/4 of a season we have seen? Well, that's the $64K question. But his talent and potential is simply unquestionable right now. If you watch the film on him, you will see a combination of skills that is simply off the charts. Where do you start? His route running? (incredible, quite honestly as good as I have ever seen) Speed? (pretty damn fast) Hands? (have you seen the highlights, as in pretty much every game?). Sure, he lacks elite size (tell that to A, Brown) and next year will be only his second, but I simply do not see how you can watch his games (and not just his highlights) and not see that this kid is truly a potential transcendent stud.

Cruz - 80/1519/9 on 127 targets in his last 14 games.

Beckham - 91/1305/12 on 130 targets in 12 games.
You forgot to mention that Beckham was on a pitch count in the first three of those 12 games. He was still recovering and only played a handful of snaps prior to week 9.

Why didn't you wait to sell in the offseason if you think his price is going to go up?

As an AJ/Julio owner I hope they perform to ODB's level.

Great post. It's hard to make the case that what he did this year was luck. I guess the only argument you could make is that he didn't have to share the field with Cruz. But that's a stretch. He seems to be a bankable top 5 WR for next season and years to come, with a limitless ceiling.

Different strokes for different folks and sometimes you need to recognize something special. I'm all about upside and we don't know what his is yet. We know he's basically broken a bunch of rookie records and would've broken a lot more if he wasn't hurt. He has the talent to be one of the best to play the game from what I've seen this year. I don't get the risk aspect. Calvin was #1 and where did he finish? AJ green? Marshall? Now brown is the defacto #1? What was he ranked going into this year? Beckham finished 8th overall in my standard league as a rookie essentially playing half a year. He's got hands and made catches like I've never seen....what's his downside if he's healthy? 7th? What's his upside? Winning a bunch of guys leagues like he did as a rookie.

That's what I'm saying. His downside is less than 7. Any of the top WR fluctuate year to year. His upside is probably right where it is now actually. I mean how much better can he get? What are you forecasting for him in 2015? 2000 yards with 20 TDs? Good luck with that

Agree 1000%. I had Gordon and traded him in my keeper, have AJ green and would trade him for Beckham. He does things routinely that I've never seen in 30+ years of watching football. He's the most exciting and talented players in the league and those that don't see that will soon enough.

I have no idea how to forecast him and what's realistic, I really don't. If I would've told you in week 5 with Beckham not participating in training camp and having zero nfl snaps to date with this amazing draft class that not only is Beckham going to be the best rookie of this class, but that he was going to have the most catches, yards and tds amongst rookies, have the best rookie performance since Randy Moss and he was going to break every giant rookie record and that he was going to be the #1 overall wr from week 5 on and that he was going to tie (with a chance to break next year) the all time consecutive 90+ yard consecutive game string and finish in the top 10 overall amongst wrs that some people might think I'm a little off base and place a sizable bet against my obviously INSANE predictions. I've posted it in here 4 times and still haven't gotten an answer. How do you stop him? What's his weakness that teams will exploit? I really don't know. The NFL is trying its hardest and has failed pretty miserably so far. I don't know how good he can be but I just think he's better than every other wr in the NFL.

I doubt that everything has been tried. NFL defenses will find a way to take him out. for the first few games he was active he took the league by surprise. Not sure how but defenses will figure out a way to stop him.

Huh? Where did you get those stats? Cruz had 4 TDs in 2013 in 16 games and in 6 games this year he had 1 TD. He has 5 TDs in his last 22 games and you have him listed for 9 TDs in 14?

Cruz has 96/1335/5 in his last 22 games, i.e. ODB has outdone his production (IMHO 5 less receptions, 30 less yards and 7 more TDs is better) in 12 games.

Here is the non-drunk look at the comparison when both were the de factor WR1 on the Giants:

Cruz last 12 games: 49/658/1

ODB last 12 games: 91/1385/12

ETA: For those of us who benefited from his ridiculous run, here is his 6 week run through the playoffs (I had him in my week 17 championship league, yes I won):

60/842/9 or 10/140/1.5 per game

That is just a disgusting PPR fantasy run from week 12-17 with only one (week 13) sub 30 point game. Heck for a rookie, 60/842/9 is a great season. For perspective, that 6 game run was better than Julio and Calvin's rookie years and slightly under AJ Green's rookie year. ODB is special, looking forward to many healthy years as my keeper.

ETA ETA: Two mistakes above, it was Cruz's last 20 games above, not 22. Also, to the detriment of Cruz, I must have added in sub-totals for receptions/yards as his last 12 games was far worse than I listed. I just went to PFR to check them. That said, doesn't change the fact that DOB outdid Cruz's last 20 games in just 12 games or that he blew away the last 12.

Since Beckham got playing time he has probably been the best. Brown has been more consistent than Dez as far as receptions and yards. It hasn't been until recently that Dez has moved ahead as far as touchdowns.

The Eminence checklist for evaluating a WR:

Saw his highlights on Youtube and they were sweet

Played Seattle and had a good statline

Genius. Yo Em, tell me more about that sweet Cordarelle Patterson Youtube video you watched last offseason. I'll stay on the line.

He's a WR1. I'm not ready to anoint him king of the heap just yet. Every D will focus on stopping ODB next season. They will double team him and take away his game. ODB will have to adjust and we will see if he can. It is very likely that he cools off next season. Just because no one can keep this up in the NFL.
You don't think every D down the stretch was focusing on Beckham? He's literally ALL THEY HAVE. Even on a day like today, Philly knew Beckham was going to get peppered with targets, and it didn't matter.

We're in store for more of the same next year, health willing.

I doubt that everything has been tried. NFL defenses will find a way to take him out. for the first few games he was active he took the league by surprise. Not sure how but defenses will figure out a way to stop him.
that must be why the first 3 games he posted a total 10/106/3 and the last 3 he put up 32/476/6

love that classic 'snuck up on' shark pool schtick

stay classic, shark pool

I don't get why people keep saying you really think he is going to put up 2000 and 20 next year. He doesn't have too, if he puts up the exact same numbers in 16 games next year he will still be a top 10 receiver, probably closer to top 5. If my first round pick gives me top 5 production at his position ( and it isn't a tight end or quarterback) I will take that every year.

Don't say there is no guarantee he does that, there is no guarantee on anyone.

there wll be a regression....no way he sustains the pace....it would be video game crazy

see Jimmy Graham and Keenan Allen and all the owners that chased their stats from last year and drafted accordingly....

with that said....he is a beast and should be in the conversation of WR1-WR5 in drafts next year.....

NYG didn't have a ton to play for and I think Eli almost treated him as that "bonus" slot/area you shoot for when playing pinball....what the hell let me chuck it his way and see if I keep hitting the jackpot....

NFL teams will adjust and make "somebody else" beat them because he has shown he deserves that type of attention....but he has also shown that he can maybe still play through some of that......the fact that he carried many teams to fantasy titles this year (ala graham and Allen last year) I think will have his ADP heading into 2015 a little higher than it should be.....I think you have to expect some regression and you should draft/trade/etc accordingly....

he could regress and still finish top 3 wr

if teams adjust why did he put up 32/476/6 his last 3 weeks?

doesn't seem like much adjustment there.

if teams adjust then I should avoid all the good players from this year, based on that logic -- they will regress and teams will adjust.

Awesome back and forth on Beckham between Bloom and Harstad on twitter the last hour or so.

I'm on my phone or I'd copy and paste the whole thing.

You can't always reason out why Calvin can be covered well enough to have a less than stellar game, but it happens. It's not like Rice had 100 yard 6 catch games every time he stepped on the field. Jimmy Graham, Tony G or Gates younger, Shannon Sharpe...there were no Safeties big enough and no LBers fast enough...theoretically they would have all had awesome games every Sunday, but it didn't happen.

Beckham Jr had an outstanding season. He may be in their class. This season looks as such but I'm apprehensive to put any rookie in the HOF.

I would take Antonio over him because I don't have any fear of a sophomore slump or whatever. He has continued to do well and I feel more comfy with Antonio. Also, I like Ben way better than Eli.

Calvin, Julio, Dez....these other guys...my favorite spot (already) for next season will be grabbing the one that falls to me.

there wll be a regression....no way he sustains the pace....it would be video game crazy

Ridiculous post. Allen and graham are nothing like odb. Insert player had a great year, better prepare accordingly for the eventual drop off!
