WR Odell Beckham, Jr., Free Agent (6 Viewers)

This might go to 100 pages with all the crying from all the OBJ owners. He deserves the one game. Should be more. Can't believe the punish pot smoking more than this garbage.

Of all the things Odell did to norman, the biggest and worst thing of all would have been to catch the 52 yard TD when he was four steps behind norman. That would have set the tone....and maybe none of the shenanigans would even have happened.

The cynical side of me thinks the league issued this suspension to send a message, knowing full well it'll be overturned, thus enabling ODB to be on the field for the Sunday night game in Minny.

Nonexistent response from the Giants so far which I find really surprising. Coughlin gave a tepid condemnation of the actions on the field but says he stands behind the player. I guess my image of them as one of the highest class franchises in sports is way off. I haven't seen any apologies from him or anyone on the Giants and if any of the coaches even bothered to reprimand him on the sidelines, it wasn't shown on TV. I assumed they would have had a meeting with him today, maybe even attended by the Maras, in which he would be told in no uncertain terms that his behavior was unacceptable and goes against what the team stands for. And I know appealing the suspension is almost automatic, but under the circumstances it would've been a really wise gesture to decline to appeal. One game for what he did is more than fair.

The whole thing is really disappointing to me as a Giants fan and they're going to lose me if they don't rein him in. He's going to be the face of the franchise for as long as he's there, and if that face is going to be Randy Moss meets Alfred Haynesworth, a lot of lifelong fans are going to feel alienated.

Another thing -- last week he was compared to Jerry Rice and said it was "shocking" to be mentioned in the same sentence. That's obviously bs because he carries himself like he's already the best thing to ever happen to the NFL. And it couldn't be a worse comparison because Rice was the epitome of humility and class.

 I'm an OBJ and Eli owner, headed to my Super Bowl where I pretty much don't stand a chance without OBJ playing. So yeah, I'm irritated that he's suspended. It will cost me around $400 (potentially, I might have lost even with him playing). But it is the right call.

really. From the same article, “If a driver is under the influence of alcohol, their risk of a fatal crash is 13 times higher than the risk of the driver who is not under the influence of alcohol,” Li said. “

No way weed can be compared to alcohol in this discussion. Pot simply doesn't have the same affect on ones motor skills that alcohol has.

Well, the good news in my leagues that i play in if you make it to the championship game at the very least you get your league fee back.

So..there's that but I'm still not feeling good about ODB missing a game.

Official statement from NFL

ODELL BECKHAM JR. SUSPENDED ONE GAME FOR VIOLATIONS OF PLAYER SAFETY RULES
ODELL BECKHAM JR. of the New York Giants has been suspended without pay for next Sunday night's game against the Minnesota Vikings for multiple violations of safety-related playing rules in yesterday's game against the Carolina Panthers.
Beckham was penalized three times for unnecessary roughness, including a late helmet-to-helmet hit against a defenseless player in which Beckham left his feet prior to contact to spring forward and upward into his opponent, lowered his helmet and initiated forcible contact with his helmet, and forcibly struck the defenseless player's head. This "blindside block" was particularly flagrant because Beckham, with a 10-yard running start, had an unobstructed path to his opponent, the position of the opponent was not impacted by any other player, and the contact with the head/neck was avoidable.
The suspension was imposed by NFL Vice President of Football Operations MERTON HANKS. Hanks ruled that Beckham's actions placed his opponents at unnecessary risk of injury and should have been avoided.
In a letter to Beckham, Hanks noted, "At numerous times during yesterday's game against the Carolina Panthers, your actions placed a fellow player at unnecessary risk…and clearly did not represent the high standards of sportsmanship expected."
Beckham will not be permitted this week to attend team meetings and functions; attend or watch practices; appear at the club's facilities for any reason; attend press conferences; appear at the team's December 27 game; or have contact with any club personnel except to arrange off-site medical treatment or rehabilitation. Beckham will be reinstated on Monday, December 28.
Under the Collective Bargaining Agreement, the suspension may be appealed within three business days. Appeals are heard and decided by eitherDERRICK BROOKS or JAMES THRASH, the officers jointly appointed and compensated by the NFL and NFLPA to decide appeals of on-field player discipline.
The conduct of other players in the Panthers-Giants game is being reviewed for potential discipline in the form of fines.

I have in two of 4 championship games. If he doesn't play I'll have to replace him with either Dwayne Harris or Jeremy Hill in one league and either Moncrief or Harris in the other (should I make the finals, need 3 points from Cooks).

I know for a fact that you can't compare alcohol with weed when it comes to driving.

Odell is good. Real good....

But Gordon good? nah. 14 games deep for each in their second seasons.... 1646yds v 1396yds...

sure, beckham w the 13td to 9td edge, but which one has a SB winning QB at the helm? I fuggin miss Gordon so much...

The league is going to be so much more fun next season w him and odell at full steam

Problem with that "study" is that alcohol dissipates from your blood much faster than MJ, which can take days, so just because a person tests "positive" for MJ, that doesn't mean they are under the influence. Sorry for the hijack.

Hijack was welcomed. Anyone who knows the effects of both know full well there is no comparison. Drunks kill people, pot smokers might drive too slowly or like I said earlier, miss their exit. There simply isn't any comparison of the two.

From the link:

The researchers also found that marijuana was the main drug involved in the increase. It contributed to 12 percent of fatal crashes, compared to only 4 percent in 1999.

I'm not sure if you can make the statement that because someone tested positive for pot that pot was the cause of the accident. Maybe there's just more people smoking and if you test them they come back positive. A friend of mine was involved in a fatal accident years ago. He told the cops at the scene that if they test him, he'd be positive for pot - even though he wasn't high at the time. He was found innocent and the police where never concerned about the pot. Not sure if they ever tested him.

Sorry for the hijack.

Tripled from 100 cases to 300 cases as compared to the hundreds of thousands for alcohol? Dont be seduced by sensational headlines son. The fact remains that alcohol is by far the most lethal road killer yet they advertise it to death every Sunday.

This conversation should be moved to different thread, but in the meantime:

Fatal car crashes involving marijuana tripling doesn't change the fact that alcohol is the leading cause of fatal accidents.

Except for the time the classy jerry Rice was caught at a brothel getting a "massage" with his pregnant wife at home.

Please take the Suh discussion to his thread. This is where we discuss what a d bag ODB is.
We're talking about Suh in relation to the suspension. It's very relevant to the discussion.
No it isn't. Even if they could prove without a shadow of a doubt that Suh did it with intent to harm, it is not the same thing. The NFL has already made their stance on this clear. They consider actions that have the potential to break somebody's back, neck, or skull to be considered far more serious. IIRC Blandino even tweeted as such earlier this year.

Yeah, well the potency has gone up like 300%. Many of us grew up on Mexican rag weed; you could smoke all you want and blitzed was like whatever, NBD. Now you take a few tokes and it's like you're tripping on microdot.

OBJ WILL appeal. What are peoples thoughts on whether he still plays Sunday?

I am thinking 65%. League had no choice but to suspend him a game but this is a first time offender right? Heavy fine he will pay but I think the chances of being overturned and playing Sunday night in prime time is better than even.

I'm not sure of the relevance of all the Gordon posts here other than both were suspended. Take it to the Gordon thread no one cares.

He was fined earlier this year when he punched that Bills player... Not at all sure what kind of weight will be given to that prior offense.

The timeline for Odell Beckham, based on past protocol: Appeals hearing tomorrow, decision no later than Wednesday morning.
I hope after further review they suspend him indefinitely. I mean, if nothing else he should respect that the man makes a living the same way he does. I can't believe it isn't an unwritten rule with these guys because it could all be over tomorrow.

Second, how freaking stupid is this guy? There's a dang Oscar-Bait ad for a movie about concussions every 30 minutes TELL THE TROOF!

Has the "non apology" written by his agent out yet?

IRL NFL terms, I would like to see him suspended. JNo should be heavily fined as well.

In FF terms, I hope they let him play. I'm playing a good friend & OBJ owner. It's a rematch from two years ago. We're 1 & 2 total points. I want it to be equitable.

I'd say there is a good chance it's overturned.

Make it an absurd 6 figure fine, whatever the CBA allows. That money goes to NFL Alumni who are in need.

Gotta figure the league has to make at least a one game wrist slap stick with all the concussion stuff going on (protocols, movie, etc.)

No chance Brooks and Thrash say "oh ok so that's your reasoning for behaving that way, well then we condone that behavior"

I heard what he said to reporters and it was weak imo.I guess it's somewhat understandable that they're standing by their superstar, but there needs to be apologies and more pointed language around Beckham's despicable behavior.
