WR Odell Beckham, Jr., Free Agent (4 Viewers)

Jerry Jones said on 105.3 The Fan that Odell Beckham Jr.’s incident on a flight over the weekend is not an issue to the Cowboys’ interest. “His overall team compatibility, his judgment, his behavior is not an issue with him,” Jones said. “It is with many. It isn’t with him.”

You go Jerruh

Jerry Jones is thinking to himself that this flight incident is a walk in the park versus what his Cowboys did in the early to mid 90s

These athletes run on a different schedule than most of us, their 5am is our 11 pm and our 6am is their 10pm, it's all very technical and complicated to the average person peering into their world, wouldn't want to put anyone to sleep trying to explain it all
Hey thanks, if you ever manage to dumb it down enough for ordinary people to comprehend, please share.
I changed my redraft team to Overzealous Flight Attendants

Odell probably had a long night hanging out in a club on South Beach. When my youngest daughter was at FSU, party school #1 or 2, first semester, 18 years old, the dorm mom called and said my daughter wouldn't wake when they found her in the shared bathroom and they had to send her to the ER per policy. Luckily, or not, she called from the ER and said after a long night of drinking, she forgot her key to her dorm room and fell asleep in the bathroom.

NFL insider Josina Anderson reports the Cowboys could offer Odell Beckham a "multi-year deal" if "the numbers are reasonable."

Jerry Jones and the Cowboys are set to meet with Beckham next week following months of mutual interest between the two sides. Beckham, 30, is coming off his second torn ACL, having played in just 21 games since the start of the 2020 season. Anderson's report hints at the Cowboys' willingness to keep Beckham around for more than just a late-season stint if he's willing to sign a team-friendly contract. It's hard to imagine Beckham will have much leverage at his advanced age, returning from another devastating knee injury. He likely won't be a fantasy factor down the stretch.

Is there that much difference between OBJ and Dez Bryant? Both guys had 3-4 great years . . . and then started getting hurt. Starting with his age 27 season, Dez averaged 44, 61, and 52 receiving yards per game, missed 2 seasons, and then made a comeback without any success with the Ravens. Starting with OBJ 's age 27 season, he has seen his yards per game total drop . . . from 65 to 45 to 38. The talking heads discussing how the team signing Odell will become the favorite to go to the SB in that conference seems like a huge stretch.

Agreed - I think people are looking too far in the rear view mirror with OBJ. He did splash a bit with the Rams, but that was before yet another ACL tear.

Is there that much difference between OBJ and Dez Bryant?
To me yes. I don't know why exactly but Dez lost his legs early. The Odell I last saw could still run and had explosive traits.Judging by other teams interest in them at this stage of their careers I'm guessing most NFL teams see it the same way I do.

It's starting to bug me that he is having a coronation tour at this point in the season like he is playing 2-3 teams against each other.
I don't understand why at least one fo them doesn't tell him if he can't make his mind up then maybe he shouldn't come there and sign with them.
OBJ should be begging for a spot, not trying to milk an extra $1M by acting like he's in the middle of free agency which is typically in March.

Sill think Dallas would fit but if I were Jerry Jones I would want an answer quickly.

I think it's important to note his goal is not a ROS contract. This sort of is his March except unlike most FA's in March he's got almost no comp. As reports are he's looking for a longer term commitment and in light of his age and two ACL's I can't at all fault the guy for trying to maximize his situation. And while one team could, and maybe did, tell him to make up his mind or take a hike then he'll still have multiple suitors. He has options and he's exploring them.

Don't get me wrong, something about him I personally find annoying but I do understand his need to maximize this and again would say I don't think he's looking for just a ROS contract but rather his last hurrah as a remotely in demand FA.

meh . . . 30 year old receiver 3 years removed from a 1,000 yard season with rickety knees. He is still living off the hype of a one-handed catch 8 years ago. He might still be able to contribute, but I don't see OBJ being a difference maker for a team. Still, I don't blame him for trying to cash in for a final payday.

Granted, they had different playing styles, and I would say Odell was more of an athlete, so not exactly apples to apples. Here's how PFF has evaluated the two over the years (start of their careers moving forward).

Dez: 73, 80.4, 76.5, 82.5, 90.6, 68.7, 80.4, 72.7, DNP, DNP, 59.5
Odell: 90.8, 88.1, 87, 69.2, 90, 68.7, 75.3, 67.8

Odell was a premium receiver 4 out of his first 5 years. But the past three years he has seen a major dip in his ratings. This year he hasn't played yet, so it's unlikely his score will shoot back up. Dez wasn't as dynamic in his prime, and his scores after his first few seasons were higher than I thought they would be.

I still think NFL teams are buying a reputation more than they are a difference maker. There's really no way to know how his knee is, if he has burst and agility, and how close he is to game shape. Add in going to a new scheme with a new QB and no chemistry, and it's more of a hope and a prayer than a sound decision to bring him in (at least for this year). Maybe he might have some value if he signed beyond this year if he were healthy and had an off season to learn a system, but at this point I think he won't be a big contributor. He added some TD as a red zone threat for the Rams last year, but I think having Kupp having an all-world season played a huge part in that.

As to multiple teams potentially having an interest, I think there are a number of teams that are finding they don't have the depth they hoped they would have at this point in the season. That's probably more of an indictment on injuries and teams not having great back up options than it is a ringing endorsement for Odell. He's a fresh body with experience and once was a Pro Bowler. That makes him an upgrade over a 6th round rookie that's been used mostly as a special teamer.

The guy that I am surprised is still out there at WR is Will Fuller. He has plenty of experience, has had some success, and AFAIK is healthy. Fuller averaged 80 yards and 0.75 TD per game for HOU in 2020. Those numbers were pretty close to what Odell put up for the Giants. On a PPG basis, that ranked as WR8 that year. He's had some injuries, but at this point he would cost pennies on the dollar and could at least be a deep threat or run slant routes.

Those same things existed when Dez, who was also a big reputation, was available and he could barely get a job at league minimum.

We'll have to see what happens with OBJ. He averaged 3.6-45.8-0.39 per game last year when he was pretty much as healthy as he's been in a long time. And he had his first 100-yard receiving game in 34 games. His numbers from last year (combining his stats with CLE, LAR, and the post season), with PPR scoring, he would rank as the WR45 this season. Since this is predominantly a fantasy football site, that's what I care more about than his perceived value to potential suitors in the NFL.

FOX Sports' Ralph Vacchiano reports there is "considerable doubt" free agent Odell Beckham (knee) can return to play this year.

Beckham, who tore his ACL twice in a 16-month span, expects to be fully cleared later this month. Returning this late in the season, there are questions over how healthy Beckham is and whether he can contribute down the stretch. Beckham informed teams he's seeking a multi-year contract that he "hopes ends up being worth $20 million per year." That would put Beckham out of the Giants' price range. Beckham is expected to visit with Buffalo this weekend but the Cowboys remain the favorites to sign if the 30-year-old returns this season.

Apparently, Beckham wants a multi-year deal worth around 20 million a year. No team should even be thinking about him for that price.

Especially Dallas which IMO would be hard to rationalize giving away Amari because of his pay and then signing OBJ for as much as Amari was making.

But what a player hopes and what they actually get are not the same. OBJ hopes to get $20M a year, he won't. But I've been saying in here that he's not looking for a ROS contract but more a rest of career type deal. That he's going to get, sort of. My guess is any team that signs him to a multi year deal will have an out no later then after the 2024 season, perhaps after the 2023. Might have some heavy incentives, good guess he'll have a lot of per game bonuses in his deal. He might even come in as high as $12-15M per year if the outs are early enough, though my guess is to hit the higher end of that it would involve incentives.

Lastly I don't really buy the report from Vacciano. I do believe he will be playing in the next few weeks. One can argue how much of a contribution he can have and that's hard to know but he'll be playing. And that will be factored into his contract. Read something about this a few weeks ago, that the way OBJ sees it contracts are based on regular season games and fact he'd be signing for just a few regular season games but ostensibly available during the most important time of the year, the playoffs, would be a factor in his expected compensation.

I wish he would just decide something already. Time is ticking for him to be worth anything in FF

As P.T. Barnum once said, “There’s a sucker born every minute.” Or maybe that was said by Michael Thomas or Julio Jones or Odell Beckham.

Seems to be three formerly remarkable receivers who are now scamming some very gullible general managers.

So, you're saying that OBJ intentionally tears his ACL just so he can rehab, come back, cash out, and then intentionally tears it again?

Man, that is dedication.

I can hear him now. "Siri, how do I tear my ACL?"

No, that’s not what I mean.

I believe that Michael Thomas, Julio Jones and OBJ all knew going into negotiations for their final contracts that their once amazing skills are gone. They have all already made a well-deserved boatload of money during their careers.. I truly hope they invested well and can enjoy a luxurious retirement in their thirties.

But right now they want $20 million a year more of their team’s salary cap money for multiple years. I think there’s a legitimate “desire to play’‘ question with Thomas and Jones (not sure about OBJ). How many practices and games do you honestly see this threesome participating in in the future (or wanting to participate in)?

I can't recall a year ever before like this one were almost everytime a player gets injured people want to label them as quitters or not wanting to play.

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said he's "not confident at all" in Odell Beckham's knee health.

Jones during a Tuesday interview said the status of Beckham's knee is an "issue" after OBJ tore his ACL in February. Beckham has refused to work out for suitors before he signs a deal. Cowboys players on Monday night took Beckham to a Dallas Mavericks game as teams -- including the Giants and Bills -- continue to court the 30-year-old free agent, who has played 21 games since the start of the 2020 season. "You got a lot of history here and you can take a good look at, not only the obvious and that’s his performance, but also any issues regarding health," Jones said Tuesday. "So, all of this we got to come in with our eyes wide open and it has to be addressed, and that’s when you can see if you can make a deal or not.” There's little chance Beckham will be fantasy relevant this season.

Weird. You'd think he could do a 44" vert the way he is being recruited by Dallas right now.

NFL Network's Jane Slater reports the Cowboys have not made a contract offer to Odell Beckham.

Per Slater, the Cowboys have "serious concerns about his ability to play this season." She indicated that he didn't work out for them, so they were unable to see him cut or run routes. Without any confirmation of the reports that he has been medically cleared, Dallas became apprehensive about signing the free agent wideout. With Beckham's health now in question, it's possible no team takes the plunge on him this year.

Haha if all this was just to feed Jerry's ego, you might as well pencil in their first round L already. I don't disagree with the take, but find it still, hard to believe haha. But I love it.

I have no doubt the Cowboys genuinely wanted to sign him, but the very public courting and nightly Odell watch feeds right into Jerry's ego. Promote himself and keep the news focused on the Cowboys.

Fair. Did they genuinely do any research on the recovery of ACL for 30 year old football players? I guess that is the right question. Hahaha. Still holding out hope they sign him, but man, the media also sucks. Everyone knows this wasn't going to happen like some miracle, but they kept at it. In part b/c its Dallas for sure...they and their fanbase enjoy being talked about for sure.

Has he worked out for anyone yet, or still just enjoying the recruiting process?

Seriously, no GM is going to pay him without seeing him do something... am I nuts?

He has refused to work out for any team, yet he wants a long-term deal at $20M per year. There have been rumors that he might not be available to play at all this season, so teams would be signing him off of potential in future years. Long story short, no sane GM will bite.

Guess he told Parsons he expects to play in 5 weeks.
5 weeks? Kind of a random time frame, like he will only make it back for conference title game?

Eh, he wants to get paid to rehab. 30 yrs old, two ACL, pass.

Maybe he is a good fit for the Cowboys... OBJ and Jerry using each other to stay in the headlines mid-week, each with no intention of doing anything further. Perfect match.

Or Jerry and the Cowboys can just talk about signing OBJ for another month, stay in the headlines anyway, and not pay him a penny. Either way they would be in the headlines, except they wouldn't have to shell out $1+ million a week to have OBJ signed and sidelined.

Cmon now, we know the sports media industry is going to talk about this team regardless. This is just a boost of the normal ratings they get, if we're keeping it a buck.
