Harvin's Positive Result Is Confirmed

Posted by Mike Florio on April 14, 2009, 10:08 p.m. EDT

Though NFLDraftBible.com took a lot of criticism a couple of weeks ago, and perhaps rightfully so, for naming six players as having tested positive for marijuana or banned substances at the Scouting Combine, we've confirmed that one of the players outed by the web site — Florida receiver Percy Harvin — indeed tested positive for marijuana at the Combine.

The news isn't a surprise, given that neither Harvin nor his agent, Joel Segal, have disputed the original report.

The impact of the result on Harvin's draft standing remains to be seen. Smoking marijuana is a fairly common phenomenon; the issue is whether a guy can stop doing it in order to avoid getting suspended.

The fact that Harvin wasn't able to produce clean urine for a test that he knew he was going to be taking isn't an encouraging sign.

The original report came from NFLDraftBible. Harvin's camp never denied the news and the underclassman is reportedly already being removed from teams' draft boards. Draft-eligibles often admit during Combine interviews that they smoked marijuana in college, but actually producing dirty drug tests in Indy sends up a huge red flag. Harvin may fall out of the top-32 picks.

PFB Weekly lists Harvin as one of the five character risk guys that have the stigmata attached to them.

The word is out on Harvin.....that he'll be a "get the money and run" type risk.

All that wasted talent....literally.

I hate when a WR's hands start bleeding....

I think you mean "stigma," not "stigmata."

First of all, do you get your news from a carrier pigeon driving a Honda?

More importantly how has Harvin wasted any talent? He was a monster in his last game (probably should have been MVP) and wowed running drills on his pro day. He might have cost himself some money by testing positive for weed, but he hasn't wasted any talent.

I heard McShay bashing Harvin last night, but the fact is that Percy was never in trouble and always delivered at UF. He played with injuries and did everything the coaches asked of him. He caught balls in traffic, he ran between the tackles, he blocked and he scored a TD every week.

McShay called Percy a 'locker room cancer'. The guy had big games in 2 National Championship victories in 3 years of playing. He must not have hurt the locker room that badly.

Percy has had character issues surrounding him since high school. What he has benefited from is having a strong support team around him to quell any issues and mask any problems. It'll be interesting to see him out on his own and not having babysitters follow him everywhere he goes. Or maybe whatever team drafts him will watch him like a hawk wherever he goes.

What are the specific character issues (aside from smoking)? I keep hearing about these so-called issues, but have never seen anything specific.

I only followed his high school career since I went to Virginia Tech and they were recruiting him. Being from the area, there was a lot more local news reporting his "issues." This excerpt from Wiki skims the surface of his high school days but you can google for more detailed stories and read the comments from people who know first hand:"However, Harvin's high school athletic career was not without controversy. He served a one-game suspension early in his junior year football season for unsportsmanlike conduct. As a senior, he was suspended for the final two regular-season games after making contact with an official and using inappropriate language during a game against First Colonial High School. In basketball, Harvin and a Green Run High School player were involved in a scuffle that prompted referees to stop the game with time remaining on the clock. As a result of this and prior incidents, Harvin was suspsended from athletic competition by the Virginia High School League (VHSL). The suspension prevented Harvin from competing in the VHSL Group AAA State Indoor Track Meet at George Mason University that year. His loss, after becoming the first athlete to win five state track titles in the same meet during his junior year, was a huge blow to his high school track team.[4] Despite these missteps, Harvin ranks as one of the greatest high school athletes to come out of the Hampton Roads area, and on December 19, 2005, he committed to the University of Florida.[5]"Basically, I remember when VT was recruiting him that many of the fans were excited but as more and more info came out about him, interest really fell to the wayside. I believe it was Percy who said he wanted to be a star, which is why he went to Florida. I've heard that he's very full of himself and not in a Chad Ocho Cinco playful/confident way but in a "my stuff don't stink, I can do whatever I want" attitude. There were many refs/officials that made comments about how difficult he was in high school (hence the suspension).I don't know if he matured or not at Florida, like I said I stopped following him once VT was out of the running. But I also understand that college programs do a GREAT job of babysitting their star student athletes. I have countless stories of VT/UVA football players who were just in trouble with the University/Coaching Staff and they would still be putting themselves in the wrong situation shortly thereafter. I know many times, the athletes were assigned "baby sitters" that would squash any problems that might arise. It wouldnt surprise me if the same happened with Percy. But after saying that, I still want to draft him in my dynasty. He is a monster on the field and as long as he can mature and stay out of trouble, then he'll be great!

Personally, I don't think smoking weed is a "character" issue. I don't think it affects performance either. The problem is that the NFL does. If a guy can't stay clean he gets suspended and eventually can fall out of the game--see Ricky Williams.

How much weed do you smoke?

whatever any of us think about weed it is banned by the nfl, if this dude cannot stay clean for an announced test at the combine, his biggest "interview" of his life, what are the chances he drops the ganj all together in the NFL?and like it or not if he gets caught there he could shaft his team

there seems to be alot of talk that he has a pretty large posse that teams are worried will get him into trouble. the more I hear, the more it sounds like pacman redux.

:lmao: I know a Bucs player that smokes, but only during the off-season. As long as you are clean on the known testing date you can do whatever drug you want.

Red flags since high school+no self control+no NFL position=bust.

Wouldn't go near him before the 3rd round.

I just don't get all the excuse-making. NFL draft picks bust at a pretty steady clip, you add in character concerns, and it only rises.

I won't go anywhere near him at all. I'm sure in every league there will be plenty of guys who will take the "see no evil, hear no evil" approach and rationalize taking him near where his talent level would suggest, and that's fine with me. I'll take the next guy in line. Then when he washes out later on it can be someone else who whines. I've been blindsided by enough player issues in the past; I'm sure as heck not knowingly and voluntarily setting myself up for another bust when all the signs are right there staring me in the face already.

Pretty sure same things were said about Randy Moss.

Pretty sure the same things were said about Pac-Man Jones. Would you like to make a list of character concerns, and compare bust rates vs. studs like Moss? My list will be longer.

And Pacman Jones and Lawrence Phillips and Odell Thurman and Koren Robinson and Onterrio Smith and Chris Henry and Darrell Russell and on and on and on...
