From the Footballguys News Blogger:

Free agent wide receiver Jerry Rice and the San Francisco 49ers are working on plans to have the future Hall of Fame receiver to officially retire as a member of the team, including Rice's signing of a one-day contract that would allow his retirement with the team to become official. "No details have been finalized, but there's no doubt the team wants him to retire as a 49er," 49ers team spokesman Aaron Salkin said. "Not only the team but the fans."

I thought he became a professional dancer... :lmao:

How could he -not- retire a 49er? It just wouldn't be right if he didn't.

What's this farce of retiring with the team you spent many of your years with?

It just doesn't make sense to me...

How does this affect HOF eligibility? He last played in 2004, so I think he would have been eligible in 2010. Does this push him to 2011 or 2012?

2010 was shaping up to be a hell of a HOF class, with Emmitt, Rice, Tim Brown, and Rod Woodson all eligible for the first time, along with others like Aeneas Williams and Darren Woodson.

So far, 2011 will have first timers Bettis and Deion Sanders. Rice shifting to another class could enable someone like Tim Brown or Aeneas Williams to make it first ballot.

Dude, let it go! Please.

-- Rice Wants to Play One More Game --

Sat Jul 22, 2006 --from FFMastermind.com

PSX reports former 49ers WR Jerry Rice would like to play one more game with the team. Rice said on his Sirius radio show that would be his dream scenario. "The ideal scenario for me would be to sign with them and then take the football field," Rice said, laughing. "Play the game. Why not?" Rice said he would like for any ceremony to retire his number to happen Nov. 19 when the 49ers face the Seahawks. Rice played his final NFL game with the Seahawks in 2004. But if Rice were to sign a ceremonial one-day contract with the 49ers it would likely take place in training camp when the 49ers might be better able to make a roster adjustment to account for his temporary contract.
