WR S. Smith Seeking 2nd Opinion On Hamstring

Darin Gantt, Rock Hill Herald - [Full Article]

Panthers WR Steve Smith flew to Alabama yesterday morning to get a second opinion on his troublesome hamstring. According to sources, Smith traveled to Birmingham, Ala., to consult with noted orthopedic surgeon Dr. James Andrews. Calls to his agent weren't returned Monday, and Panthers officials won't comment. It could be a sign things are improving, and it could also be a sign things are not? Verification Link Provided

yeah this is turning into a long and ugly situation and really ruining the Panthers title hopes. Amazing how much affect he has on their offense

This is a no change. There is no indication why he's going. It could just be the team sending him because he hasn't healed fast enough.

I'd view this as bad as well - no need for a 2nd opinion if it's healing. Even if it is, maybe Steve thinks it isn't getting as better as he's being told.

I just wish he'd be "Doubtful" or "out" instead of questionable so I can move him to IR and move on...

the more I think of it, this is odd timing. I saw a report just this morning that Smith was going to be listed as questionable on the injury report. this does not jive, unless that ir listing is a ruse.

Doctor Andrews is internationally known and recognized throughout the world for his scientific and clinic research contributions in knee, shoulder and elbow injuries, and his skill as an orthopaedic surgeon.
Why would you see this guy for a pulled muscle? :o

Incase surgery might be required? He is a well known surgeon. It maybe that he wants a highly known doctor to take a look at him instead of team doctors to get away from the team influence.

Steve Smith owners definitely need to :banned: and  and in general, just chill out. Don't panic, yet. There's just as good a chance that this visit means Steve Smith is getting closer to return versus being a sign that the other shoe is about to drop.

As a Steve Smith owner, I'm actually encouraged by this news. Given how meticulous Smith has been over his rehab and his outspoken desire to not return at any degree shy of 100% health, this could just as easily be Smith going the extra mile to make certain that a return soon won't put him in jeopardy for additional injury.

I'm cautiously optimistic that this visit is a precursor to seeing Smith on the field sooner than later.

anytime you see DR JAMES ANDREWS in a player report, say bye bye to player in question for a while... that guy's name is synonymous with "you're f#cked" :(

I don't like to hear anyone is visiting Dr Andrews - not a good sign IMO.
:goodposting: This Dr. is who the baseball players go to see when they hit the DL, and not just the 15 day version. Smith could be out for longer than expected and would hurt a lot of teams. Granted he hasnt played, but considering he was the #1 or 2 WR taken in drafts...he is starting to have bust pick written on him. The guy is an amazing receiver when healthy, but if this is indeed a serious muscle problem as it is shaping up to be, this could be one of the biggest blows to Carolina and the people who chose them to win the NFC.

the only reason this worries me is because we havent heard any progress updates on smith. Nobody has said he's getting close, or its healing or anything of the sort. Since he injured it, all thats been said is he's out and we dont know when he's coming back. Or he's out this week, he hasn't been close to playing, he hasn't been on any shows saying its getting better, etc. When T.O. hurt his, he was updating people on his condition, saying it was improving but taking time to do so, we haven't heard an inkling of proof from Smith that he's getting better.

At 1st it sounds like a bad sign, but I will not jump to any conclusion.

If I owned a team and one of my assests who makes millions was hurt, he would be on his 4th opinion by now.

Thats just me though.

OR,

He could be very ready to playing and the team just wants a 2nd opinion that he is cleared?

but wide recievers can play through broken fingers, right?

i guess what i am asking is-is drew carter cooked as a fantasy option?

it sounds like opportunity is there, but is keary colbert now the guy?

i would agree the name james andrews is not a good sign, BTW.

If he needed surgery I think he would have had it already. My guess is that the hamstring is better but not all the way there and he wants to know about the chances of reinjuring if he plays. I'm sure the team is putting a lot of pressure on him to play this week and he wants an outside opinion on something as important as his hamstring. TO brought in his own guys too and played fine the first two weeks.

posted earlier:

Coach John Fox said Carter's finger would not require surgery.

Carter, who was injured on a second-quarter reverse, had his right forearm wrapped in a soft cast Monday, from the base of his fingers to just above his wrist.

"It'll be all right," he said. "Right now it's just a lot more swelling than anything."

Carter believes he will be able to play Sunday at Tampa Bay, perhaps wearing a pad on the hand with the fingers taped together.

Would anyone care to make an argument for the bolded wording? I can't think of a single basis for this being a sign things are improving.

The sky is falling! The sky is falling!

Seriously, don't overreact. My guess is that he's seeing a specialist he trusts to talk about the healing process. I'm sure he's dying to get on the field right now.

Now, if he had previously been reported to have a 'knee sprain' and he was visiting Dr. Andrews I'd be really worried too. Of course there's always a chance that his injury is something more serious than previously thought, but that doesn't seem like the most likely explanation here, given that it's a hammy.

My take on the situation is that the team doctors are probably telling Smith that he can begin to start practicing again, and maybe even play week 3. But Smith wants to get a second, unbiased opinion to ensure that he doesn't risk further injury, and to not risk the rest of his career - there is alot of money at stake if he were to suffer a career ending injury.

I have NEVER heard anyone go see Dr. Andrews and it turn out to be a GOOD thing.

You guys can just go ahead and blame me. I am *officially* a S. Smith Jinx.

2003 I made a waiver move for him and was beaten out by a guy a little lower on the waiver priority - 1100 yards, 7 TDs

2004 I drafted him in the second round. Watched him break his leg on TV. Mush owner goes on to win title

2005 I am all poised to draft him but the owner RIGHT BEFORE me grabs him. 1500 yards, 11 TDs.

2006 I draft him again in the second round.

I promise never to draft Steve Smith again.

Do me a favor and draft him every year, as the owner who has him in my Dynasty league is a real blowhard, and i love watching him kvetch and moan about not having him...its his reasoning for going 0-2 so far this year. :lmao:

#### Andrews, Smith needs to go see whoever helped T.O. or Hines Ward get back on the field from their hammy problems.

And preferably before he drags all 4 of the teams I have him on down the toilet....

:wall:

My general understanding is that 99% of those that go to see Andrews, regardless of sport, gets surgery with him in one way or another. Please correct me if I am wrong.

yep. anytime me or someone in my family went to get a 2nd opinion it was because things were getting worse and/or not improving.
Yeah they would never go just to get a second opinion. This has to be bad. EVERYBODY PANIC!
denial is often coupled with sarcasm. my stud wr already missed 2 weeks due to a lingering injury. i'd pull my head out of the sand and make some contingency plans... just in case.

any insight....carolina homers....is drew carter worth a pick up....??

Latest Info:

Got a call from my cousin in Alabama, who's wife works in a clinic, next to the hospital, and she said she heard a intern talking to a guy on a cell phone who was just in a stall in the restroom next to this Andrews guy. He said that he got a call Saturday from an agent who asked if Andrews would be availible for a consult on Sunday. Guy in the stall said he called a fellow intern at the office who said he heard from his brother's friend who is close to the wife of the wife of Andrews that he wouldn't be in the office on Sunday.

I hope this clears some things up for you guys who really need the most recent news on S.Smith.

:sarcasm:

It might help to read the entire article - sounds very positive:

Smith seeks 2nd opinion on hamstring

CHARLOTTE -- Carolina Panthers wide receiver Steve Smith flew to Alabama on Monday morning to get a second opinion on his troublesome hamstring, which could actually be a sign things are improving.According to sources with knowledge of the situation, Smith traveled to Birmingham, Ala., to consult with noted orthopedic surgeon Dr. James Andrews. Calls to his agent weren't returned Monday, and Panthers officials won't comment.

Smith has missed the first two games of the regular season after tweaking his right hamstring the Tuesday before the opener. He missed 17 days worth of training camp after a similar injury to the left side.

Since hurting the right one, he hasn't practiced, and when he's stopped to talk he's offered only that he was "day-to-day."

Simply getting another look at the injury isn't necessarily a dire sign. Players get outside opinions often, and there's a sense that Smith's getting closer to a return and just wanted to check with Andrews to make sure the progress was real and that more activity wouldn't pose a risk of another setback.

Smith has said he wants to make sure he's completely well before he comes back, so he doesn't lose the chance to play in more important games later in the year.

If the current problem follows the same timetable as the first one, he could be on pace to return to the field later this week. The Panthers offense could certainly use a lift from last year's league-leading receiver. They've scored one touchdown in two games.
