Baylor WR Tyquan Thornton's official 40-yard dash time dropped seven-hundredths of a second to 4.28 seconds.
The second group of receivers was going faster than any in recent memory and the results are shifting shortly after the session finished. Thornton (6'3/182) saw his time drop to 4.28 and Ohio State WR Chris Olave saw his drop from 4.26 to 4.39. What would cause those times to drop that drastically? Perhaps a new timer. Underdog Fantasy's Josh Norris pointed out that Charley Casserly is no longer doing the timing for the NFL Network and that it's Marc Ross' first year in doing so. A clearly unideal circumstance for the league, network, and the athletes.

Did the Patriots need to trade up to take Thornton -- or could they have drafted him much later? After speaking with other NFL talent evaluators, Sports Illustrated's Albert Breer believes it's the latter.
"One area scout assigned to Baylor told me he had a fifth-round grade on Thornton," Breer wrote Monday morning. "Few had more than a fourth-round grade on him. He went in the second round."
Breer also reported that the Patriots overvalued Strange as well, with most teams viewing him as a third-round pick or late second-rounder at best. But our Phil Perry spoke to an AFC executive who saw Thornton in Round 2 as a "bigger (reach)" than Strange in Round 1.
"There were teams who liked Strange, just thought it was early. Fewer teams were high on Thornton," the executive told Perry.
Thornton is an absolute burner whose 4.28-second 40-yard dash was the fastest among wide receivers at the NFL Scouting Combine. He has a very thin frame, though -- 6-foot-2, 181 pounds -- and lacks in lateral quickness, which appeared to hurt his draft stock in the eyes of other teams.
But the Patriots weren't deterred, nabbing Thornton with several other talented wide receivers still on the board -- Alec Pierce, George Pickens and Skyy Moore to name a few. Nearly every NFL Draft expert -- from our Phil Perry to The Athletic's Dane Brugler to ESPN's Mel Kiper Jr. -- had all three wideouts ranked higher than Thornton, which makes it all the more puzzling why New England traded up to draft the Baylor wide receiver instead of just taking him at 54.
Bill Belichick and the Patriots very well could prove the "experts" wrong if Thornton develops into a productive wide receiver. But at the very least, it seems like New England could have waited to land the Baylor wideout while using its second-rounder on a more pressing need like linebacker -- which it didn't address in the draft.
Patriots traded up with the Chiefs to select Baylor WR Tyquan Thornton with the No. 50 overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft.
While Thornton's (6'2/183) unofficial 4.21 40, which would have been a Combine record, did not stand up, he still flashed in Indy, running a 4.28 official with a 36.5-inch vertical and 10-foot-10 broad jump. That performance came on the back of an impressive senior season in which he logged a 62-948-10 line as Baylor's leading receiver. Thornton matches his legit deep speed with impressive ball skills that could make him a dangerous field stretcher at the next level, but a slight build, limited play strength, and a bottom-tier agility score could prevent him from developing into more than that. He will push Nelson Agholor for WR3 duties in New England as a rookie.

Tyquan Thornton's release game is a thing of beauty. Been a minute since the #Patriots had a WR with his kind of speed and quickness at the line.

Tyquan Thornton is a WR prospect in the 2022 draft class. He scored a 9.77 RAS out of a possible 10.00. This ranked 61 out of 2613 WR from 1987 to 2022. ras.football/ras-informatio… #RAS
I truly do not see anything impressive here. Looks like he juked a defender who was deathly afraid of him and ran the rest of the route at 3/4 speed.Evan Lazar @ezlazar

If you've watched NE the past few years, no one has been able to juke and get off the line like that. That was the point of the video. Whether that is impressive or not, who knows. The Patriots went overboard in trying a new approach this year. They drafted the fastest RB, WR, and CB/KR in the draft, all with high athletic scores. They valued that over projected draft grade. They needed speed and explosiveness, and they drafted speed and explosiveness. I believe the strategy was get some fast players and hope they can coach them up. There certainly were other fast players with better / more finished skills available that played against stiffer competition. We'll have to see if this approach yields (m)any dividends.I truly do not see anything impressive here. Oh, I certainly get the point of the video. The problem with it is that college defenders are 97% garbage, so it would be like him trying to juke me off the line.If you've watched NE the past few years, no one has been able to juke and get off the line like that. N'Keal Harry > Deebo Samuel > AJ BrownI mean if anyone can draft WR talent, it's the Patriots.
Cole Strange is also a guy with a super high RAS score. It certainly seems like BB went full on "draft the best athletes" this year as opposed to "draft the best football players". It will be an interesting case study. If you've watched NE the past few years, no one has been able to juke and get off the line like that. That was the point of the video. "second-round pick Tyquan Thornton seemed to be more involved on Wednesday. His highlight came in 7-on-7s, when he ran past both the cornerback covering him and safety helping over the top to haul in a deep pass up the sideline from Brian Hoyer."
Even as a reach, Thornton could still become an asset. He was a reach. As usual with BB. He is turning into the worst evaluating of WR talent of all-time.
The Athletic's Jeff Howe reports Patriots rookie Tyquan Thornton has "mixed in with the starters" during minicamp.
The Patriots' selection of Thornton with the 50th overall pick in this year's draft was an unpopular one among analysts and draft experts. Despite the unpopularity of the pick, New England appears set on giving Thornton every opportunity to earn a significant role throughout camp. Boasting a 4.28 40-time and the title of the 2022 NFL Draft's fastest receiver, Thornton went for 62-948-10 in his final season at Baylor, averaging 15.7 YPR for his career. Outside of a top slot receiver in Jakobi Meyers, the Patriots lack top-end talent at the position. They signed DeVante Parker earlier this offseason, who has one 1,000-yard season in his seven-year career, and bring back 2021 free agent signings Nelson Agholor and Kendrick Bourne. An impressive offseason could open the door for Thornton to see significant snaps as early as Week 1, which would comes as a pleasant surprise to drafters taking a late-round chance on him in drafts.

Khari Thompson @kdthompson5
Tyquan Thornton has DBs looking high and low for him today, but no one can see him. Snapping off routes like crazy. And when he gets the separation...forget it. Gets better every day.
Doug Kyed @DougKyed
Noticed #Patriots rookie WR Tyquan Thornton getting more work with the first-team offense today. Starting WR group was already crowded with Jakobi Meyers, Kendrick Bourne, Nelson Agholor and DeVante Parker getting reps with Mac Jones. Team feels Thornton has earned more snaps.
Good point... After all, never too late to restore the vertical passing gameHope he has a good career.
Would have been a first rd pick for Al Davis
Mike Giardi @MikeGiardi
Tyquan Thornton TD. Inside release. Robinson had his hands on him and the rookie was able to fight thru contact and create separation at the top of the route. Reminder: Robinson is one of the Giants starting CBs. #Patriots
Alex Barth @RealAlexBarth
Tyquan Thornton continues to impress. Recognizes the need to break off his route to help a scrambling Hoyer, pulls away just enough from the corner, and ends up with the TD.
NFL Beat Writers @32BeatWriters
“(Tyquan) Thornton started practice off with a bang. He won both 1-on-1 reps, with the second ending with a diving catch...In team drills, Thornton continued to pop. He repeatedly got open for Jones…At pretty much every step along the way, Thornton’s stock has continued to rise”
Longtime Patriots beat writer Tom Curran has called second-round WR Tyquan Thornton his "biggest surprise" of Pats camp.
Thornton has been drawing consistently solid reviews. "Not just a straight-line blur, he’s outstanding at changing speeds and setting up sudden breaks which a lot of fast guys struggle with," Curran observed. "He’s shown physicality and toughness despite being shaped like a Q-tip. He’s got excellent body control. He’s mature. I’m excited to watch him." Thornton's 4.28 speed was definitely a missing element for the Patriots' receiver corps. Now we will just have to see if it can earn him consistent early-season snaps in a crowded group. The WR85 on Yahoo, Thornton is essentially free in fantasy drafts.

Thornton suffered a shoulder injury on his one catch tonight against the Panthers. He did not return to the game.

#Patriots rookie WR Tyquan Thornton, who was ruled out last night with a shoulder injury, suffered a collarbone injury, sources say. The promising campaign is now put on hold, though based on his timetable, the injury to the speedster is not season ending.

The twig already snapped.
Patriots placed WR Tyquan Thornton (collarbone) on injured reserve.
Slapped with a 4-8 week timeline after breaking his collarbone in the Patriots' second preseason game on Aug. 19, Thornton must now miss at least the first four games of the season. He will undoubtedly be one of the Pats' eight designated "return" players, but he is unlikely to have a big enough role to carve out re-draft value, at least off the bat. That could change if the Pats' deep-but-undynamic receiver corps gets off to a slow start in the speedy Thornton's absence.

Patriots rookie WR Tyquan Thornton was activated today from IR and has a chance to make his debut tomorrow against the Lions, per sources. Even if he plays a limited role, Thornton would beat the initial estimated timeline of 8-10 weeks. @TheAthletic
Yeah he's at the end of my bench but pretty impressed so far, seems like he could be a difference maker. Glad to have him in dynasty to see if/how he progresses.Got this guy on my taxi squad. May have to bring him up if this continues

Tyquan Thornton caught 4-of-5 targets for 37 yards and a touchdown in the Patriots' Week 6 win over the Browns, adding three carries for 16 yards and a touchdown.
Thornton didn't get the start but took the field often after Kendrick Bourne went down with an injury early in the game. He picked up his receiving score, the first touchdown of his career, on a goal line pass from Bailey Zappe. The rushing touchdown, a jet sweep, iced the game, putting New England up three scores with less than five minutes left. Fantasy managers shouldn't bet on Thornton scoring at this clip in the future, but the strong performance could earn him more work. He should be stashed in all leagues heading into his Week 7 matchup with the Bears.
