WR Zay Flowers, BAL (1 Viewer)

Jared Tokarz @JaredNFLDraft
As a Boston College season ticket holder I’ve gotten to witness greatness of WR @ZayFlowers

At 5’10 172lbs, I truly think Zay will be a slot nightmare at the next level. The best word to describe him is “SUDDEN”

Jared Tokarz @JaredNFLDraft
His ability to get in and out of cuts is impressive. Every time he touches the ball there’s a chance he’s going the distance.
High motor, high effort player.

Scouts concerns: Small frame = Smaller catch radius

78 catches 1077 12 TDs in 2022

Think he goes early 2nd round

I mean cmon ???

You’re doing yourself a disservice if you pass on a talent like this just cause the consensus rookie draft ADP told you to which gets thrown out a few months later anyway

Zay Flowers is electric, reach for him

Zay Flowers has elite change of direction which is what makes him such a great short/intermediate route runner, you can line him up anywhere and he’ll excel

Filthy whip route here, Zay can do it all

Sometimes you can just tell when a player doesn’t belong on the same field as the players they’re playing with or against

Zay Flowers demonstrated that regularly throughout his college career

This explosion / natural elusiveness after the catch is seriously SPECIAL

He’s one of the better prospects at the 98th East-West Shrine Bowl (NFLN, 8:30pm Thursday Feb 2)

Senior Bowl has been the big college all star game week for awhile but looks like the league is trying to support this one a little more
  • game was moved to Allegiant Stadium couple years ago
  • coaches this week & next are the full staffs of the Falcons and Patriots - 5th year the NFL has provided the coaches
  • they use NFL officials

Reese’s Senior Bowl still has better players but I’m glad they’re keeping the Shriners going. Been around since 1925, great tradition & cause.

Someone talk me on or off him.

Watching the highlights on youtube, I'm a big fan. He's super shifty, gets open at every level. Route running looks great--as far as you can evaluate it on youtube clips.

He's on the smaller side at 5'10 172, but guys have had major fantasy success around that size.
I'm not sure what to make off the ACC competition. Would have been nice to have seen him vs an Alabama, Georgia, Ohio State, etc.

I like him, but as with many of the WRs in this class, landing spot is going to be hugely impactful to his NFL prospects.

Draft capital also.

Impossible to talk you on or off of him until
I know where he plays, but I am absolutely paying attention to it. He’s fast, twitchy, and runs good routes.

I have my own comp for Zay Flowers but it's irresponsibly lofty expectations so I'm afraid to say it.

but I mean...you guys see it too, right?

Curious to see the workouts. He's a little undersized and not an early declare so he needs an impressive combine IMO.

That's 2 people I've seen comp him to AB in the last day.
Usually we save the crazy hyperbolic comps for a little later in the offset, right?

the formula is to grab a 'Bama, Ohio State, Georgia WR. Maybe another team or two like an LSU. Don't buck the trend. take from the where the gettin's good.

Yeah mayyyybe the school that produced Justin Jefferson and Ja'Marr Chase. Maybe.
Not mocking you, just thought that was kind of ironic heh.

I have to say - that size scares me off. Also, if his reported height/weight is 5'10" and 172 lbs, what are his ACTUAL measurables?

2023 East-West Shrine Bowl Risers From Weigh-Ins and Measurements

Excerpt:

Zay Flowers, WR, Boston College

For Zay Flowers, the headliner of the 2023 East-West Shrine Bowl roster, it wasn’t so much about impressing with his measurements. It was about not measuring smaller than expected — a fear many held for him coming into the event. Upon receiving the numbers, Flowers came in at 5’9 1/4″ and 182 pounds. He’s still considered below-average in size. But after playing in the 170-pound range at Boston College, it’s good to see Flowers at a weight that will be passable, given his play style. All that’s left is to see how he looks at that weight in practices.

Several NFL scouts reportedly believe that Zay Flowers is a name that could “sneak into” the first round of the NFL Draft.

The Boston College WR led his team in receptions, receiving yards, and receiving TD’s this past season 👀

Tony Pauline @TonyPauline

.@BCFootball wide out Zay Flowers just told us during @ShrineBowl interviews he hopes to run the forty in the low 4.3's at the Combine. Has been running some insanely fast ten-yard splits in training.

10pm and Zay Flowers is at the gym getting work in at the @ShrineBowl hotel while everyone else is sleeping… He is different.. #LAA twitter.com/i/web/status/1…

Zay Flowers was putting on a clinic today @ShrineBowl practice!!! Boston College WR is polished with his route running skills very electric ⚡️! He is as advertised! @ZayFlowers @coachdwyatt @BCFootball @BobbyBeltTX @NFL @EricGalko @RosterWatch

Every time I watch his highlights, I fall more in love.

He has elite speed, route running, and is electric with the ball in his hands. The only thing that gives you pause is the size. I was looking up other "5'10" receivers. Tyreek Hill was 5'8 and change at his combine. Jaylen Waddle was 5'9 1/2. Perhaps 5'9 isn't the end of the world--assuming the speed holds up.

Needs to smash the 40, and subsequently get 1st round draft capital. But if things work out like I think that will he's my 3rd or 4th receiver in this class. Addison and JSN are a clear top 2, after that, I can see a lot of movement with plenty of room for Flowers to ascend.

When SVP asked Todd McShay to name a first-rounder who’s “absolutely rocketing up the board,” McShay didn’t hesitate.

“Zay Flowers. Wide receiver from Boston College.”

“It won’t surprise me, when it’s all said and done, if he’s somewhere in the top 15.” boston.com/sports/college…

I’ve been talking him up since January. I agree with your last post. Dude is hard not to love when you watch him play.

He’s being mocked to the Chargers (yes please), the Chiefs (drool) and the Giants (should be the WR1 day 1 target-share-wise)

Hoping he’s there at 1.08 or 1.10 by the time draft day rolls around. I’d previously been hoping to get him at 2.01, but once the hype starts & a landing spot is known, that might be a pipe dream.

If he goes round 1 it's only because of how weak the WR class is and how few of 1st round grades are coming out. He' small, he's going to be 23 in September. He has a lot of Rondale and Wandale in him. Which isn't bad (I have drafted and been vocal about the talent of both those guys). It's not 1st round of the NFL draft good though. His testing is really important. It needs to show he is special athletically at an NFL level.

I believe he’s a round 2 pick, personally.

Was my target at 1.11 in one league but maybe he's gone by then. Not as afraid of little guys these days, and Flowers seems to have just about everything else but size.

Playing the Bryce Young Weight Game While We Wait for Answers on Aaron Rodgers and Derek Carr

Excerpt:

I also asked the same question to my old ESPN buddy Todd McShay.

His answer: “Zay Flowers, the receiver from BC. He’s the Energizer bunny. I went to camp in August, and talked to coach [Jeff Hafley], watched him practice, I saw it. He has energy like very few guys do, he’s quick in and out of his breaks, he plucks the ball out of the air on the run, he’s just a natural. And after the catch, he creates. He’s a little undersized, but he’s got a shot to be a great No. 2, with his speed, and how you can work him in the slot, and what he brings in the return game.”

I would love him on the Giants, but two things:

a) They already have a small slot-type route running maven with short arms in Wan'Dale Robinson (who is actually has worse measurable than Zay)
b) Argument could be made that Giants need more size in the WR room. Wan'Dale, Sheperd (should be re-signed for cheap)... Hodgins the only big WR.

That being said, Daniel Jones has a type: guys who get separation with speed/excellent route running. This is definitely the type of WR Daboll needs to draft if the Giants re-sign Jones.

5’9”

Love the kid & he can play, but he’s tiny
Tyreke Hill was 5'8 and 1/8th at the combine
Waddle was 5'9 and 1/2 (4/8s)

Flowers came in today at 5/9 and 1/8.

I'm not telling anyone he's the next Tyreke Hill. But there's precedent for these sub-5'10 guys succeeding for the NFL and Fantasy. Would I feel better if he was 5'10 or 5'11? Sure. But the biggest knock on him being his height--and he's measuring between the two studs from Miami in that regard.

We've seen a shift in the NFL the last IDK how many years. Smaller guys are succeeding. I remember back in the day, I wanted all of the 6'3 220 guys. Now we're seeing all these 5'10-6 foot guys dominate. And many of the "5'10" guys aren't the full 5'10.

Edit to add: If you check ESPN/Rotoworld--they list Hill and Waddle at like 5'10. If you google their combine height, 5'8 and change for Hill, 5'9 and change for Waddle.
