WWYD - Dog with dementia like symptoms (1 Viewer)

Curious how FFA feels about this situation.

12-year-old Shi-Tzu has been diagnosed previously with dog dementia. Took some stuff that helped sort of, but in the last 2-3 weeks is clear that she doesn't really know where she is or who we even are.

I believe this is accelerated by her eyesight issues and she's struggling to identify her place/people which is now driving anxiety. Even with the max anxiety meds she still is shaking/nervous all the time and pacing in circles.

I'm sort of ready to call it. There's a chance this is a phase of the dementia and she rallies, but I think we are past the point she returns to normal.

Health wise honestly she is in good physical/organ health. Plan to go to the Vet, Mon, but lately it seems like we are promoted a bunch of crap to keep the dog alive who is at times quite miserable.

This is going to sound so weird; but if I could have helped my mother out of this, I would have. If the poor little soul is that unhappy, I would let her go.

Years ago, my family kept an old dog with blindness, dementia, and probably other issues a lot longer than they should have. It was pretty heartbreaking after a year but went on for a little over two. Would not recommend.

Sucks to hear and a tough call to make. Agree with Chief above on the quality of life.

Yeah, I think this is where I'm at. I mean feels like could in theory live another year rather easy.

It has been a little bit up and down with a steady down trend. Like every few days sort of snaps out of it. This downtrend has been by far the steepest and most severe thou.

My dog can't hear and definitely has dementia...

Still likes walks and chasing her ball on occasion

She just turned 14. I'm not looking forward to the next phase

this is awful to hear. my last boy had doggy dementia and it was hideous for all involved. he forgot everything and got stuck in corners, paced, stop playing. but he ate like a champion. my decision came down to his dog level, essentially, outside of eating was there anything he enjoyed. i couldn’t find anything. it’s pretty much exactly 2 years from today and i miss him every day. as much as i continue to suffer, it was my responsibility to make sure he didn’t suffer and didn’t hurt himself. comes with the job.

before you get there, i tried this;

Selegiline 5mg Capsule

i read people had some success and it’s worth a shot. i don’t know it helped my guy much, but maybe it stopped him from getting worse.

The shaking and the nervous part is what tells me it may be time. I feel your pain as I’m afraid I’ll be facing the same decision with my boy. I was looking at Canna Pet. Had a friend who gave this to her dog when he had cancer and she got another good year with him. Said it made a huge difference almost immediately. I can’t vouch for this personally, but I may give it a shot. Sorry man.

This is me, but his joys for walks is decreasing. He still loves his golf cart rides, but I think once that goes it’s gonna be time to take a look. I’m going to look at supplementing him with CBD to see if I notice any improvement.

Good luck with whatever you decide. I think it’s crystal clear that you are a loving owner and regardless of the decision that you make—I think it’s going to clearly be a decision that is made with the absolute best intentions for your dog.

Ran some checks but was left with no option other than brain tumor or degeneration beyond anything but palliative care. Didn't see any point of a cat scan and she passed peacefully.

Will be missed. It is still sad but I mean we saw the signs. Just deteriorated so much faster than would have expected at the end.

We said good bye lastnight. Heart is broke of course and yet one more piece of my soul taken.
