Have a mechanic look at it and diagnose it.  If the buyer broke it his bad time frame not my problem.  If not then maybe help him with the cost.

Latest news:

he thinks damage is contained to ring and pinion, which would be a miracle in this axle (usually when the diff goes it takes the carrier/locker with it).  He's confirming though. I've requested photos 39,299 times and have gotten zero.

He knows I have connections/buddies who own off-road shops and my club has negotiated discounts with big vendors like 4 wheel parts so he's asked me to help source the new gearset which I've agreed to do. As of yet I've still not offered to pay for anything, but I have been extremely accommodating with advice/guidance on diagnosing the issue.

Hopefully he finishes up checking everything out this week so I can order him the gears and get the jeep back running again, and this behind me.

[icon] I think you've gone above and beyond what could be expected of a private seller. You sold it as-is, yet your concern shows though your posts here.

You're a standup guy.
Yeah, that's exactly what I got from this thread as well.

Props to OP for being a good guy.

You have to expect issues when buying a modified / wheeled rig.

i bought a locked, long armed TJ with a rear Detroit and front ARB.  Once going through a curve the rear locker "popped" a little louder than normal and the whole car started shaking.  I immediately pulled over and the upper control arm was sheared off where the weld was.  I was not speeding or anything.  I chalked it up to a crappy weld and $700 later lesson learned.

Yep. He commented that it felt like he was pulling a truck.... meaning he either had the locker engaged or the O/D off... or both. Ugh.  Of course I commented on that and he changed his story to say it only pulled hard AFTER a loud bang. Right. Even if so.. who tries to continue to drive a vehicle with a loud bang and a seized rear axle?!

This just doesn't add up.

I'm frankly pissed at this point that my jeep is in the hands of a guy who clearly has no ####### idea what he's doing. :(
As soon as the cashiers check clears, it's no longer your Jeep. That's the answer to all of your questions/dilemmas moving forward.

Icon is heavy into offroading, so much so that his internet name is a top notch jeep hot rodder.  He sells his highly modified Jeep and is now driving a Hyundai that he praises. Posts wwyd about his beloved build and then doesn't update the thread...  Come on.  Icon is falling faster than Otis.

  sorry guys

he IDd it as ring and pinion, possibly bearing failure. Gear oil was indeed low.

I helped him source a new ring and pinion plus master install kit for $290ish. He paid. Haven't heard from him in a week or so. I think alls well.... we shall see ?

Good times

To fall faster than Otis I would have had to have been in the super elite upper tier, which I am not

Sorry GB.
