xbox one vs ps4 (1 Viewer)

I could care less about the graphics compared to the 100 fixes they need to make with the interface.
Admittedly, I haven't played used my XBO much for gaming so far, but I've used it a bunch for Blurays and other apps and don't have too much of an issue with the interface. What are your complaints? My only issue is that the voice command can be spotty at times which is annoying.

I bought an XBO at launch and just ordered a PS4, so I'm not really a fanboy of either. I will say that in the couple months I've spent with the XBO it has a lot of impressive features and the Kinnect is much cooler than I was expecting. Each system has its pros and cons.

I'm trying to buy a PS4. On my 4th XBO, still having controller disconnect issues. Anyone know how often the PS4 comes available on Amazon?

Sure. The hardware on both of these is pretty poor, so it is laughable that XBO is taking a big performance hit to use this Kinect.

Don't see one from Amazon, but just looked on bestbuy.com and seems to be in stock.

  • Interface is unintuitive
  • it takes twice as long to get to your friends list as it did on the 360
  • it takes twice as long to get into party chat as it did on the 360
  • party chat is much more finicky than it was on the 360 (a non-open NAT will now preclude you from chatting)
  • how you invite people to a game is a total myth (I still have no idea how to invite someone to a MP game I'm in. This is the biggest offense, as this was so easy, consistent, and intuitive on the 360)
  • no notifications when friends sign on
  • no notifications when friends are playing the same game as you
  • random incorrect/confusing notifications ("XXXX has been added to the game!" when they actually haven't)
  • demos not required on XBLA games
  • can't change queue order for downloads (you can pause one download, but that's the extent of how you can manage them)
  • games are half-assed (no MP lobbies in Killer Instinct....what a joke)
  • Dashboard gets very laggy after use (kind of like Windows when it needs a reinstall).
  • No way to view how much hard drive space you've used
  • No way to view battery life in controller
  • Can no longer view what achievement you just earned by pressing the XBox button when it pops up.
Just off the top of my head.

Don't know how or why they messed it up so bad, but they did.

My only complaints are regarding the Snapped TV.

1) Would like to be able to get rid of all the channel junk and just have the TV and black bar below it.

2) Would like to be able to size it to get a little larger TV picture.

With that being said I love playing forza and watching re-runs of Archer and It's always sunny.

Got my PS4 today. Took a few hours to download Ghosts, BF4 and the two PS+ freebies. And speaking of PS+, why is it so screwed up in the PlayStation store on the PS4? I go into the store, click PS+ and it just wants me to buy a subscription. There's no way to get to the list of free PS+ games and no way to sort them in the regular store menu. So dumb.

Not a big fan of the main menu layout either. Maybe I just haven't figured out how yet, but there doesn't seem to be a way to get rid of the Video Unlimited/Music Unlimited/PlayStation Room crap that I have no interest in. I don't want or need those giant icons on my screen.

The graphics are definitely pretty though and I like the controller for the most part. The Options button is on the small side though and pretty hard to hit when you're in the middle of a game.

So now you have to pay a hundred bucks more for a camera that they are going to disable to get a little more power to the system. Brilliant.
Specious argument. If a game doesn't use the Kinect why not redeploy that 8% processing power to what needs it?
I fixed your post. The point was if you are deploying a underpowered system why would you reserve 8% of the OS for a camera when it isn't used in the first place.

The fact of the matter is that they had built the system with a mandatory always on Kinect and then reversed themselves too late in the game to fix the problems they created.

The bright side is that now maybe with that extra %8 power they may be able to take the 30 frames per second cap off of some games and get them to run in simulated 1080p, at least then it will be better than a 360.

Because they were (and are) dreadfully behind on system software development. I like the XO, but the OS needs a huge amount of work. They are whacking moles at this point. That one was sticking up highest.

Just picked up a PS4.

I've had an XB1 since launch and I have to say that Madden and Battlefield 4 play and look quite a bit better on the Playstation.

Graphics on PS4 have less jaggies, the motion is more fluid and it powers through menus and loading with much greater ease.

I'm pretty surprised.

It took me a little while to get used to the PS4 menu, but now that I've grown accustomed to it I like it a lot more than the PS3 version. Except I do wish I could delete or somehow hide Music Unlimited and the Playroom thing. Oh, and they need wallpaper/themes.

Rumor mill: New xbox one design to cut price by $100

http://www.geek.com/games/new-xbox-one-model-to-cut-price-to-match-ps4-report-says-1583739/

It’s been well-documented that Sony’s PS4 has thoroughly beaten Microsoft’s Xbox One in sales since both consoles released back in November. The Xbox One isn’t floundering by any means, though, but the perception and fact that it’s in second place will only hurt the console in the long run, especially with the PS4′s looming release in its home market of Japan on February 22 poised to significantly grow the gap between the two consoles. The one strategy Microsoft can employ to mitigate some of Sony’s impending sales explosion is to change the Xbox One’s price to one that can compete with the PS4. A new report claims that Microsoft will indeed employ this strategy, and cut the price of the Xbox One to compete with the PS4, which is currently priced at $399.

The only way they could manage that is by eliminating the Kinect portion. And I don't see that happening. They've sold it as being an integral part of the XBone and have maintained for quite some time that they would not release one without that as a feature. Reversing course now would not only be a huge admission that they screwed up, but any developer that integrated those features into their game with the belief that all XBones would support it would be extremely upset.

I will be buying one of these systems but its going to come down to Elder Scrolls Online. Any idea when we might get some reviews for how the gameplay works on either system for Elder Scrolls?

The main rumor floating around is that the $399 model will still include Kinect but won't include an optical disc drive. I'm not sure how believable that is, since they would need to include a larger HDD if it was going to be digital-only.

That said, I think you're right that a Kinect-less model would be more successful.

The word is they are going back to their original design, the one without the disk drive to cut the cost.

The premise is they get a bigger slice of the revenue if all the content is distributed through live.

The only notable difference that I have seen mentioned so far between the two versions is that Elder Scrolls Online is a free to play model. That means you would not have to have a Playstation Plus membership to play it, much like Netflix Hulu etc. If you get the Xbone version you will have to pay for a XBlive membership to access it.

And I heard for the first year, you have a monthly ESO membership of $15/month regardless of platform. For me, that's crazy talk. No way in hell I pay that on top of Xbox Live just for this game.

I agree that a Kinect less model would sell more sucessfully, but the weird thing is the Kinect is the primary reason for choosing a Xbone over a PS4.

I guess that makes sense from Microsoft's viewpoint since they probably despise paying royalties to Sony for the Bluray drive anyway.

My guess is that a huge percentage of buyers would reject this though. Just look at the backlash there was when it seemed as if you couldn't sell your pre-owned games. Obviously this would have the same effect. And frankly, I can have 30 games in my library in disc form with no problems and just pop them in an out. Go ahead and try having a game library that big with just a hard drive. And maybe I'm wrong on this, but I think I remember reading that you can swap out the PS4 drive for a larger drive but that you can't do that for the One. Yuck.

Microsoft will patch in (hopefully soon!) the ability to use external USB drives to store/play games.

I still don't see them selling a drive-less console. What's the cost difference to them - maybe 20 or 30 bucks? I think if they price drop, it'll just be a price drop. No removal of kinect, BR drive or hard drive.

It so fookin' easy a caveman could do it. It literally took me 2 minutes to swap the original 500gb drive out and replace it with a 1TB version.

I've been messing around with xb1 a little. Not blown away or anything. Probably will get a ps4 in the spring.

Microsoft refutes the $399 XBox One rumor:

Aaron Greenberg, chief of staff for the Devices and Studios Group at Microsoft, has confirmed via his Twitter account that a cheaper Xbox One isn’t happening. He points out that you shouldn’t believe everything you read on the Internet, which is true, but this is one rumor I’m sure a lot of people at Microsoft’s gaming division would actually hurry up and become true.

Xbox is gonna diiiie, this cycle of gaming system releases. Once most people invest in their console, then that's it. Most of the world can't afford to buy games for 2 different systems, let alone buying 2 consoles to begin with.
Pretty sure the xbox is selling well.

Yep. Really, all gamers should want ALL consoles to sell well. The last thing I want is a single console market. That would be the death of console gaming.

That's a denial, not a refutation. And it's the only thing Greenberg could possibly say on this topic since it's marketing suicide to confirm that you're planning on cutting prices in the near future.

That said, I'm kind of skeptical of the "$399 XB1" rumors. I'm incredibly skeptical of any rumor that has them ditching Kinect (they should IMO, but they won't now) and the disc-less console rumor seems kind of far-fetched too. Like Steady said, the Xbox is selling extremely well at its current price point. I don't see much reason for a price cut this early.

Nice trophy list, I am pretty sure you have OCD though, you and I have roughly the same trophy score but you have twice as many platinums!

:lmao:

I am kind of a neurotic completionist when it comes to certain games.

Did you platinum Dark Souls? The miricle achievement is redonkulously hard. Last one for me.

Nope. I'm missing the "Acquire All Miracles" trophy (which like you said has some crazy requirements) and the "Acquire All Rare Weapons" trophies (knowing that I wasn't going to platinum this anyway, I didn't feel like grinding for the Channeler's Trident). I see now that I'm also missing the trophy for maxing out a weapon with crystal reinforcement, which I'm guessing is one I must have just blown off because I never use that particular upgrade line.

I'd rather have console gaming die than have it go the direction MS is pushing things. Frees up more franchises to be on PC.

You are right. I will use my words more carefully in the future.

Nerd.

 This generation is much cheaper than last generation was and that's without taking inflation into account. The Xbox One WILL eventually take a price cut but not now. Both systems are selling very well.

As a PC gamer, I disagree. I believe now is a perfect time to be a gamer on all current platforms - with Wii U being the exception :smhNintendo:

As always I wait at least 2 years before going next gen. bugs, lack of great games and I like the game devs to get a grasp of the new power, etc. Typically the great games really start coming out 2-3 years into the new cycle. Heck the very best games for PS3 came out in the past two-four years. PS3 dropped in 2006.

Skyrim

Dark Souls

The Last of Us

Arkham City

Far Cry 3

MLB The Show 12/13

XCOM Enemy Unknown

Mass Effect 2 and 3

Tomb raider

Battle Field Bad Company 2

NBA 2K14

NCAA 14

Borderlands 2

Dragons Dogma

Uncharted 2/3

Dead Space 3

Plus the price point (which for the PS4 is reasonable compared to that insane 599 price point the PS3 had at launch) will drop too. By the time I am ready to go next gen my PS4 will cost me 349.....maybe even 299.

And yes I will be a PS4 guy. I have been a PS guy since day one. Their exclusive titles rock and I play MLB The Show year round. Best sports game ever made bar none, hands down.

I downloaded Outlast last night and played for a little bit with the lights turned off. Yep, the light on the PS4 controller is really annoying in a darkened room. I can't believe there's no option to disable it.

How is the game itself?
I'm only about an hour in, but it's been really tense so far with several good "jump" scares. Nice atmosphere too.

Trying to really soak it in on my first play-through, because I suspect that this is the kind of game that will drop off a lot on subsequent runs. For example, there was one early-ish sequence that I died on a couple of times, but with a few tries I was able to figure out how to get through without much problem. On a second play-through I would expect to breeze through that same area. In other words, a lot of this game's appeal is atmosphere and not knowing what's around the next corner. I'm guessing limited replay value.
