xbox one vs ps4 (1 Viewer)

This will be my the first XBox launch I've skipped.

Going PS4 this year for the free online and the extra $100 since I'll never use Kinect. My gaming has changed considerably over the last 4 years (kids) and I'm never playing anyone online anymore. I've become more of a offline franchise gamer, occasionally play FPSs online.

XBL cost is the kicker though. Not worth it for me.
PlayStation Network will now be the same cost as Xbox Live fyi.

FYI PS4 requires you to subscribe to PS+ to play multiplayer.

Is sony sticking with that same controller design? I really prefer the microsoft controller.
Basically, yeah. They made a few tweaks, but it looks like essentially the same controller.
I haven't seen this mentioned but I'm guessing that both new systems can't be used with the current generation controllers, thus they want use to buy new ones right?
At least in the case of the PS4, I'm nearly 100% sure you have to buy new controllers. I don't know about Xbox.

I pre-ordered both consoles since I couldn't decide at the time, and now I think I'm going to cancel both. Let me know if any FBG's are having trouble getting a pre-order and we can figure something out (not looking to make any money). Otherwise I'll just cancel soon.
Note that both consoles are sold out now. There may be some $ to be had in reselling. Particularly for the PS4, since it seemed to have less presales and sold out very quickly.
Yeah, I've thought about it. Don't know if I want to take much risk for what is likely a small profit though.
What is the risk factor in reselling?
Sony seems to be keeping up well with pre-orders. I don't think there will be a shortage for Christmas. If you want it launch day, that's a different story. I don't know about Microsoft's camp. Rumor is they have a pretty good production too.

PS3 went from selling $1000 on eBay at the start of launch day to MSRP two days after. (I know, because I was trying to resell one and only came out even.) The XBox 360 was hard to come by until about Feb or March the following year. The Wii was the big seller, though. You could flip those easy.

Thanks for the heads up. Had no idea.

Yes, they will both require the new controllers.

Apparently Battlefield 4 also runs natively at 720p for Xbox (1080p on PS4). That's now two massive third party titles from different developers and different distributors that chucked console parity overboard right out of the gate.

Edit: Like the COD issue, this is still rumor. Microsoft and developers are being tight-lipped about resolution and other performance issues on multiplatform games.

Edit 2: There are enough people inside the industry confirming this that I don't think it's really accurate to call it a "rumor."

Edit 3: Bleh. 900p on PS4. That sucks. There is no reason why 1080p / 60 fps shouldn't be completely standard for next-gen games. Hopefully this is just a one-time thing resulting from cross-gen development.
Yeah I read this morning that it's confirmed BF4 on PS4 is 900p (which is still great anyway IMO).

Also, it sounds like COD has framerate issues on both consoles, but may be patched at launch. Further, it sounds like COD may look not so great regardless...maybe they rushed it? For me, I'm holding off on both these titles until we have some solid reviews beforehand.

Not sure if the X-Box One has the same ability....but the 50.00 a year I spend on X-Box Live is worth it just for the fact that it also acts as a Cable Box for my Verizon FIOS services.

Just one thought. If the HDMI passthru feature works as I think it might you could merge multiple sources behind the 1 and then hopefully split the audio off to toslink for older Amps. I have a really nice Marantz that I would like to press back into service and it's a constant struggle because i don't have a great way to merge the signals. Would save me a few hundred bucks not having to get a modern amp.

I know my eyes aren't everything they used to be but I don't see much difference. I slightly preferred the Xbox because it seemed brighter but it isn't all that big a difference and both seemed fine.
Yeah, it seems that this is similar to the Xbox 360 - PS3 generation where multiplats are basically the same. Where we'll see the power of these consoles is in their exclusives like Ryse and Killzone.

Yeah I would assume the exclusives is where we'll see any gains.

The only reason to buy one or the other is the game exclusives really. When you really look at the specs it is too close to call and each has it's area where it is incrementally better than the other. So buy the one that will play the games you want that you can't get on the other.
/thread
Actually, that's not the only reason to buy one or the other. If you like to play games online and all or most of your friends have one console, you'll almost always be better off buying that console even if you miss out on a few exclusives.
I'm confused by the specs. Some places say that PS4 has a leg up on X-box as far as graphics, RAM and cost. Other places Ive seen said X-box can only broadcast in 720 or 900p (or was it 910?) and that Playstation was better with that as well. Than places say that the Playstation is a "gamers" console and x-box isnt

Honestly, I dont have a clue what half the stuff I typed above even means....
The PS4 on paper has slightly better specs mainly GPU & memory. Xbox has a slightly faster CPU. Both can do full 1080p, it's up to developers to set the native resolution in games. I know the Xbox will upscale everying to 1080p regardless of native resolution. I assume the same is on the PS4 (upscaling).

Side note: Higher resolution does not mean better graphics. Don't get too caught up in resolution. 1080p works well with some games, depending on the situation. In others, not so well as they need to sacrifice fps or image quality so many games will go 720p or 900p but be very, very nice looking - in fact better looking than they would if they tried to go to 1080p.

Both are gamer's consoles. Xbox Live historically has been years ahead of PS+ but I can see that narrowing or evening up this go-around. They both have added capabilities in twitch, game recording and some other stuff. The Xbox also has Skype and comes with the Kinect. The Xbox is also $100 more. Hope that helps.
This helped a lot, thanks!

More and more people seem to be making a big deal of this 720 thing and no one seems to mention what you did above with the upscaling. Is there any reason why?

It's because 720p native upscaled to 1080p isn't the same thing as 1080p native running at 1080p. A 720p source has a ton fewer pixels than 1080p source material does. Upscaling it doesn't add more picture -- it just interpolates pixels that weren't there originally. This results in more blurriness and more aliasing ("jaggies") than you would see even if you just ran the 720p source at its native resolution, and definitely more than you would see with 1080p source material.

Do you own a 1080p television? Have you ever noticed how awesome blu-rays and 1080p Netflix videos look? That's in part because they're displaying at their native resolution. Popping a "standard" DVD into your console and upscaling it to 1080p does not result in anything close to the same picture. (That's a bigger scale since DVDs are 480p I believe, but it's the same principle).

:goodposting: That makes perfect sense now and thank you very much for clearing that up.

Here is a just released side by side comparison of Battlefield 4 on the Xbox One and Playstation 4.

http://www.ign.com/videos/2013/10/28/battlefield-4-xbox-oneps4-graphics-comparison

The Xbox One is native 720p upscaled to 1080p using a custom hardware upscaler (Hanna2).

The Playstation 4 is native 900p upscaled to 1080p using software upscaling.

The differences are pretty much non existent. Which goes back to what many of us have said that you should go for the console which has the exclusive games and ecosystem you prefer. Since multiplatform games will be the same across both.

Also, Jobber is also right that while 1080p > 720p all else equal, sometimes all else isn't equal. If a developer has to cut down on textures, lighting, frames per second, particle effects, etc. to get a game to run in 1080p, then they might be better off just settling for a lower native resolution. That sort of thing is going to be a game-by-game issue.

Ivan, what is the deal with the current PS3 mic/party chat system? Do they have one now or does the PS4 have that part worked out. IIRC somehow Microsoft had a corner on party chats. Seems ridiculous that they could, but re-familiarize me with that part.

Im asking because I don't like what I am getting out of MS this time around....

1 I don't like the Kinnect - Not because I'm worried about Buddyball watching me in my draws, but that it likely impacted the other more important hardware.

2 I'm concerned Microsoft saw that the Wii was a complete joke yet sold a kabbillion. Thus strategically not overpowering the system.

3 While I think the Live service is good, I think what makes it shine is how dreadful the online experience is for thew current PS3. Live also hasn't evolved. Sure they've added Netflix and apps but who hasn't?

I have my issues with Sony too but I'm sorta rooting for them this time because I just think the back and fourth is good for the industry. It's a license to print money for the winner and that opportunity creates money for development and improvements. Video games aren't going to be games for much longer.

But again, all for nought unless they knock the online stuff out of the park.

Very good point. Ivan bringing the unbiased! ;)

The current PS3 version of PSN is basically the same as it's always been -- mics work fine, but no party chat. It is inconceivable to me that Sony would not learn their lesson and incorporate stuff like that from day one in "new" PSN, but I've seen next to no details reported about what PSN is going to look like. The only thing I know for sure is that Sony is now making you pay to play online. If they don't bring along most of the features and functionality of XBL, that would be a fiasco.

xbox one and PS4 both support party chat of up to 8 players. Both were confirmed this week over at IGN if anyone needs the link I can find it.

I saw this earlier this morning. Without knowing what Microsoft paid to nail this down, this is almost certainly a good business decision. This is the one and only near-launch title that I can see the standard gamer, the kind of guy who buys COD every year, buying a new console for. Nothing against Dead Rising or inFamous or whatever, but Titanfall is going to be a commercial success and will move hardware. It was also smart to launch this in the spring when it doesn't have to go up against COD and Battlefield -- unlike what Sony is doing with Killzone.

Finally the Xbox gets some good news after what's been a rough few weeks.

I still can't decide which one I'm getting....I've always had xbox.
if you've spent a lot on xbox live arcade content, it don't see why you wouldn't switch over to PS4. at least some of the content that you buy will be things that were exclusive to sony before.

If we missed the pre-order.. is there a chance in hell of getting one of these before christmas?
I think Walmart says that even if you missed the pre-order they can guarantee them before Christmas
Came in here to find out where you guys are pre-ordering. The Mrs can't find a PS4 anywhere, all sites will not let her order online. Walmart says it will ship on 12/11 but will not let us order. :kicksrock: If anyone finds somewhere to get one or has any ideas, please share. Or it's going to be an ugly Christmas season for me chasing a ps4.

Sony finally came clean on a few things that they'd been mum on.

  • No youtube uploads, at least at launch
  • All games require install (but you can play during install)
  • No external storage support (can still replace internal HDD)
  • No DLNA support at all
  • No music visualizer
  • No more dynamic themes
  • No .mp3 playback

Really gotta say that the more and more I hear about Playstation 4, the more I know it's not what I was hoping for. Recent weeks have swayed me over to leaning Xbox One, although I won't be buying at launch or for a while after (if at all).

The other stuff I don't care about, but I do occasionally like to do custom soundtracks for racing games. From what I've read, this is a bull#### money grab in which Sony forces you to subscribe to its music streaming service if you want music over the PS4. Sorry, but I'm sticking with Rhapsody. There is no way in hell I'm buying an additional music subscription on top of what they're charging for Plus.
