xbox one vs ps4 (1 Viewer)

Yea, I think the era of flipping those is all but done unless one is clearly outselling all others like the Wii did back then.
Yes. I wish I waited until that Sunday and stood in line for the Wii instead. Who saw that coming? I certainly didn't.
I remember several years ago when it was nearly impossible to find a Wii. We had threads here about how scarce they were, and whenever somebody posted about some Retailer X who had some units available for sale they already sold out before anybody could snag one. This is all anecdote of course, but I don't see anything like the same level of excess demand for either of the new consoles. Maybe that will change, but with Thanksgiving right around the corner I'm not seeing it.
That wasn't until well after the Wii was released and demand shot up even more. At and especially before launch, people weren't nearly as gaga over the Wii.

I've yet to see a console that you couldn't make at least a little something off of within the launch window. The PS3 dropped fast but even that I made a few hundred bucks on the next day. That said, supply seems to be higher this time around as I don't remember anyone taking pre-orders as late as people have been able to get with the PS4/XB1 last time around.

I think you "missremember". Those things were profitable prior and about 8 months after launch.

What am I missremembering? As I mentioned, every console in recent memory has been profitable prior to/at launch.

The point is that the crazy Wii demand that Ivan is referencing where everyone just had to have one didn't start until after launch. He's comparing that craze from several months into the Wii's launch to the lack of craze now, several weeks before the launch of the PS4/XB1. If anything, several weeks before the Wii's launch people were still gaga over the PS3. It's not like Nintendo announced the Wii and everyone said "OMG I HAVE TO HAVE ONE". They announced it and everyone just kind of shrugged. It wasn't until they got out there and every social gathering started revolving around someone's Wii (heh) that people went nuts over them.

Fair enough. I have no idea what kind of manufacturing pipeline there is for either of the new consoles. Maybe one of them will get really bogged down and you'll be able to flip a launch unit a few months from now. Personally I don't see it as worthwhile enough to sit on one while we wait around to find out, but that's just me.

I sold two PS3s at launch. One for $1,500, the other for $1,200. I included overnight shipping in my auctions.

Don't forget, the economy was way different then now. Every fool that owned a house had new found cash due to the housing market and the HELOCs they were giving out.

My neighbor bought TWO Lamborghini Gallardos. One year later, he didn't even have the house.

This isn't true. You could find a PS3 the day after launch at most retailers. At least you could in my area. That's why the eBay market on them collapsed after a few hours and why I barely sold it to recoup my cost (actually, I lost money on it, since I did free shipping and didn't include the cost of sales tax).

Must have gotten those up early that morning. By that evening, prices were down around $600-$700 each, if that. I do remember the prices being high that morning, but I couldn't post until I got back home from work. By then, it was too late to take advantage.

I have a friend who claimed to flip several of these for over $1k locally. Think he was full of ####.

Things may have changed fast on release date, but we're talking about a week or two beforehand here and the online perception of demand at the time was not yet in the Wii's favor at that point.

Here's an article from the week before the PS3/Wii release.

https://blog.compete.com/2006/11/13/sony-playstation-ps3-vs-nintendo-wii-vs-microsoft-xbox360-demand-wars-survey-traffic-stats/
It was impossible to find for me after release for a couple of weeks. Eventually got one at Wal-mart at 6 in the morning one random day.

I have a PS4 on preorder, going XBox One now. If anyone discovers a method for an XBone at launch, let me know.

(Also, I'm in Sacramento (Bay Area too) so If someone has an extra XBox One preorder they're cancelling, I'm down to trade.)

I have my media set up on a Windows Home Server 2011. Would a either be able to access the videos and music on the server? I would think the Xbox would since it is you know a Microsoft product, but that may be asking too much. ;) If something doesn't exist now, has there been an add-in for other gaming products for the WHS?

Thanks!

I'm not sure what you're asking but if you're asking if you can access the stuff on your computer using your xbox- yes, you can .

You can do a lot with your current xbox that most people aren't aware of , including using it as a DVR.

I guess I am asking can I get to the server with the Xbox. I have an AppleTV, but I could move that to another location in the house.

Both the xbox 360 and xbox one support dlna, so you should be fine connecting to your media server.

The ps3 supports dlna but as of now the ps4 does not.

Is there any speculation as to why not?

I've just read this past page of the thread so sorry if this has been covered, but is there any chance of me getting a ps4 before christmas without having it preordered?

Plenty of speculation. Here is the view from Sony (it feels like back peddling to me but I don't care as long as the feature is added)

============================

"Over at Giant Bomb, SCE Worldwide Studios President Shuhei Yoshida spoke candidly about the lack of DLNA and MP3 support on the PS4. After the official PS4 FAQ was unveiled, there was substantial pushback on the internet over these features. The sheer amount of feedback surprised Yoshida and Sony’s development staff, so now there is internal discussion taking place about adding in these features after the initial launch.

Yoshida goes on to point out that there are a number of features — like suspend and resume mode — still missing from the PS4 at launch. It’s obvious that the engineering team is strapped for resources, and lack of DLNA and MP3 support were simply casualties of the time crunch. He makes it clear that these features were not shunned for political or business reasons — there just wasn’t enough time to fit in everything. While the skeptics among us might label this as backpedaling on an unpopular decision, I’m inclined to believe that this simply came down to the harsh realities of shipping a product on a deadline."

Pre-orders have opened back up off and on. I imagine availability will be the same. You've just got to be ready to pounce.

Am i the only one who is totally fed up with all the microsoft login security handholding? I had to change the email address on my account (old email was from college, no longer have access). You would think I'm trying to hack into Area 51. I've probably gotten 10 emails/texts with codes that I have to verify. And even after all that, the "official" email address on the account is still one that I don't have access to.

Its beyond painful.
Lord yes. I finally jump in and get my kids their own accounts on a family plan. It creates some mystical email address for them without a password. A week later it is asking for a password that we don't have and now the kids can't play on the new accounts. Hours on the phone and no one can figure out how to get me access to the new accounts. I don't play on the xbox much anymore so its almost been enough to push me to PS4 this time around because the kids would rather have that.
We have a similar problem over here barley since we run three accounts on three xboxs on different TVs depending who is doing what. I have found that it often gives us the choice to verify our accounts by text or email but it won't let us use one that we already have, but if you completely ignore it and press B it will back out of it and let you play. It doesn't say that B will let you do this and I only found it out because I was frustrated and said #### it I'm not typing in this #### again.
They were able to back out with that for awhile and still get online. Now if they back out with B it is offline play only.
nah backout and then relogin...i am still not verified and annoyed

I have read (i.e. you should confirm) that many places are getting more than their preorder amounts for walkins. I'd find your least trafficked Gamestop or somesuch and ask if they are getting extras. Then it is camp out time.

With the amounts that they are making I don't expect a huge shortage.

Doing some reading up on the PS4...

They have their own version of the kinect, called the eye.
This is one thing I'm really wondering about. I suspect, given how much effort MS has place on it, that the Kinect is miles superior to the PS one. Seen lots of comments that assume they are equivalent. I would be very surprised if they are. For all that the PS has the advantage in horsepower I'd be willing to bet this is one area that MS have a clear lead.

They released what the Eye will be capable of at launch a few days back and it's pretty limited.

It looks like you can turn the system off or launch a game via it, and that's pretty much all at this point. No integration with other apps, launching anything other than games turning the system on, etc.

I have not decided which next gen system I want and will likely hold off on getting one since there is no game i really want to play from the launch lineup. Watch Dogs is probably the first game I want to play and thats in 2014.

As of now PS4 has better graphics, doesnt come with annoying Kinect and is 100 bucks cheaper, seems like the easy choice and I have been Xbox and 360 last dozen years.

Oh,I haven't been following this game too much. I know its made by former IW personnel and that is great since COD4 was one of best gaming experiences of my life and IW sucks these days without them.

But the preview footage I saw had these huge titans firing at one another, just seems like its going ot be super arcady instead of feeling "real." FWIW I hated Halo and all shooters that were Sci Fi types instead of the real and gritty style shooters of MW and COD4

Sony has confirmed that the PlayStation 4 will support both MP3s and CDs in the future

http://www.ign.com/articles/2013/11/13/ps4-adding-mp3-and-cd-support-post-launch

Looks like DNLA is going to be patched in also

Their excuse is they just didn't have enough time to fit it in. Seems pretty odd. What else did they squeeze in or didn't completely finish / test?

And really, how much work would it have taken to support MP3 playback? This doesn't seem like the kind of thing that would require a team of engineers working around the clock for months to get up and running. This is just a really bizarre oversight and/or aborted moneygrab.

Or just guys with a huge list and this fell down a ways. Even these guys are surprised sometimes at what the public thinks is value added. Smacks of truth to me.

Every report by people that have played it has been off-the-charts glowing. This and The Division (which is multi-platform) look really, really good.

Yep, it just isn't forced on you.
And sucks, in comparison.
Both suck. One you don't have to buy.
Disagree- one is functional the other is a half assed attempt to compete. This is the same as last time....

The ONE does more but isn't the better pure gaming machine.

The PS4 will be a better offline pure gaming machine .

I thought the same thing til my old college buds started pointing out Skype, Snap and Voice/Face Recognition features. Since we're all spread out all over the country, this is actually a pretty cool way to meet, chat, game and see the families. Snap is awesome cause I usually game while baseball, basketball or football is on. Now I can have it Picture in Picture. I'm thinking I won't need Kinect to utilize these features, but the voice commands makes it appear to operate with ease.

My problems..

1. I have no idea how I'm gonna connect Kinect to the XB1 in the media closet. (About 25' away)

2. Doesn't look like DTV DVR features are integrated into the XB1 OS.

3. At this point I only have a PS4 preorder.

never buy A system when it launches. The games aren't there yet.
If you're going to wait a few years for the light hardware revision, I'd agree. If you have the coin, whats the problem with buying now?

Plenty of good games coming up, but that is probably relative to what games you like.

I think the RROD is at the top of everyone's list on concerns, I know it is my biggest concern.

Yep, and I like a machine that does multiple things well including online gaming. Just don't want the Kinect.

Will there be a Minecraft for the Xbox? My kids are addicted to it. I'm pretty sure that MS won't let Sony put it on the PS. It currently isn't made for the Wii.
