Earlier in this travesty of a thread, I posted that I was experiencing diminished picture quality when running a DirecTV receiver through the Xbox One. It was noticeable and unacceptable to me.

Turns out you must use the Xbox supplied HDMI cable to run from the xbox out to the TV to AVR. Counterintuitively, that flimsy looking xbox cable performs perfectly. Picture quality is just as good as running the DTV box straight to the TV.

I was able to take advantage of the pass through features which I really like. Switching back & forth between games, TV, Netflix, etc is well done, especially when playing a game and while keeping an eye on the football games in the corner.

The smartglass app on the iphone and ipad is pretty convenient also. I can use either iOS device as a full remote control, running the whole dashboard without the need to turn a controller on. It can also control volume, channel and power of my TV and AV receiver.

With only a DTV remote and my phone or ipad nearby, my coffee table is way less cluttered without having to buy a harmony remote.

I'm not a fan of talking to my TV, but I can just say "Xbox On" and it turns on the xbox, DVR, TV and receiver. My wife and kid really like this.

All that considered, I am much happier with the system than I was last week.

Have you used the fantasy football app at all. The fantasy football app looked interesting but I didn't know if it was going to be the same as a website dashboard or if you could modify it for your league.

I spun through it and unless you have a fantasy league through NFL.com, it's basically only a app to watch clips from NFL Network. Unfortunately, none of my FF leagues are on NFL.com so I can't comment, but I'd like to hear what others think of it as well.

One thing that was pretty cool about my XBox replacement..

When I got the new one installed, all my settings and automatic game saves were restored from the cloud without me doing anything. It took a little while to restore them all, but it's pretty cool I didn't lose them all or have to use a thumb drive to back them up.

Reviews have been stating that the graphics on multiplatform games look better on PS4 but the frame rates have been worse. That's one of the things I'm interested in seeing play out over the next 6-12 months. It may be that the PS4 is objectively superior in every way, but I think it's too early to close up shop and declare total victory on the graphics.

Do you have a link for this? I haven't seen any reviews that show the PS4 running at a lower frame rate than the Xbox, but I don't read reviews of every game that comes down the line so I may have missed one.

For example, here's Eurogamer / Digital Foundry on AC4:

So once the day one patch has been applied we're looking at a crisp, native 1080p framebuffer on the PS4, backed up by a new custom post-process anti-aliasing solution that works well in suppressing jaggies across much of the scene. This gives the game a clean look overall, barring issues with sub-pixel detail that can only be resolved on PC, where a vast range of anti-aliasing options are available if you have the GPU power to run them. Moving onto Microsoft's console, there's no special update to boost resolution on the Xbox One game, which renders at 1600x900 while using an older post-process AA algorithm that doesn't provide the same smooth level of coverage we see on PS4. This isn't necessarily a deal breaker though, if you consider how well the stock 900p PS4 game is upscaled - even without the patch, overall image quality still looked remarkably smooth.

That said, it's instantly obvious that the same level of image quality isn't present on the Xbox One release, which looks visibly worse in comparison to the unpatched 900p PS4 game. Essentially this translates to a fuzzier image on screen that highlights the breaking up of fine detail in the distance while smoothing over texture details. As we've seen in other sub-1080p games upscaled by the Xbox One hardware, overall image quality is further impacted by the introduction of an unwanted sharpening filter, directly responsible for the grainy pop that surrounds the texture work and foliage throughout the game and the visibly hard edges on foliage and complex scenery.

Thankfully, the performance situation is far more positive when sampling both next generation consoles. While we aren't looking at the 60fps gold standard favoured by enthusiast PC gamers, Black Flag manages to stick closely to a solid 30fps across both formats. In fact, on the PS4 we never felt or noticed anything other than a locked 30fps update at all during our four hours or so of capturing - an impressive feat considering the boost to 1080p rendering. The Xbox One version mostly achieves the same solid 30fps performance at 900p, but there are times when the frame-rate is noticeably compromised, resulting in uneven motion and even the odd torn frame (too few in number to be noticeable).

Better resolution. Same or better framerate. BF4 and COD have been the same.

And again, this isn't to say that there's anything wrong with buying an Xbox -- there are lots of good reasons why a person might go that route. But just in case there's actually anybody reading this thread who doesn't have his mind made up already, we should be honest about multiplatform game performance. Not every game runs better on the PS4 than the Xbox. But some do, and none run better on the Xbox. I'll happily concede that that's just one factor in a person's buying decision.

This was brought up earlier in the thread. The issue with the PS4 version of COD is that it suffered from frame rate spikes, not frame rate drops. Allegedly this has been fixed, but I'm not a COD guy so I'll defer to those who are.

This is fantastic news for both Microsoft, Sony, and console gamers as a whole. I hope both the PS4 and Xbox One sell 80 million each over the next several years. We must have more than one successful console to keep the innovation going.

I found myself hardly ever using my ps3 because the online play was such a hassle. Not sure what the differences in online play between the 2 new ones are , but something like that is more important to me than some of the specs talk that I probably won't even notice.

Lag is common issue with online games on all platforms. The menu thing depends on the game. Neither of those has anything to do with your console.

Both of the new consoles offer stable online play.

I have mainly been playing Battlefield 4 a typical start up would be.

1. Turn on ps4 load up maybe 10 seconds or so

2. it auto signs in to psn 5 secs later.

3. Click on the BF4 tile the BF$ load comes up for 4-8 sec then the hit start button

4. hit start and you are on the main menu

5. When you hit multi you go to the quick, server search of test range

6. I generally hit quick match choose a type and you are put in The wait is in general 15 secs before you are in the game it can be up to 30-40 secs if you catch a ending match and have the 30 second intermission to sit through.

Blacklight retribution is a little faster because it doesnt have as many menus to go through.

Small sample size but it seems quicker to me, but I don't think I had the issues signing in on the old system that you did, hope that helps.

I think you can, I had a guy fish a ethernet cable through the walls for me at my last house that was probably 75 feet. I don't know for sure if it was one cable or two 50' linked. A lot of those home network guys will do it for you for $100-$150.

I'm also holding out hope for a next-gen version of Dark Souls 2. I'm still pessimistic that this is going to happen, but strong sales at least make it a little more likely.

I like that too, but any thoughts I had of getting the xbox one evaporated when the rumor of the free Sunday ticket got killed and that the pass through wouldn't let me pass the PS4 through with out serious degradation. I had considered both for the hub/gaming combo but not possible.

The prices are dropping rapidly on ebay too so I think the market is almost saturated. You should be able to find either for retail should you want one for Christmas.

I am thinking it may have to with his birthday and being 9. So, the system is restricting him from being on line. Not sure though.

Yes, there is a minimum age requirement to play online. Not sure what it is. My son was clever enough to be 18 when he signed up a few years ago.

Edit: By "be 18" I mean entering a birthdate consistent with being 18. He's actually 14 and was probably 11 when he created his profile.

Edit 2: Loan Sharks' suggestion about PS+ is a strong possibility too.

Do you have the PS+ subscription? PS+ is needed for online multiplayer content.

That would be my first guess.

The other possibilities are that you have somehow restricted his account in the parental control settings.

I don't think it has to do with his age as I think Fifa is family friendly
