xbox one vs ps4 (2 Viewers)

Need some help from any folks who may have a PS4 --

When my 9 yer old son plays NBA14 or FIFA 14 under his profile on the PS4 we get an error saying -- "Does not meet the minimum requirements to play on line." I am not sure what this about. Have any of seen this issue and any suggestions on how to fix it.

I am thinking it may have to with his birthday and being 9. So, the system is restricting him from being on line. Not sure though.

Thanks.
Yes, there is a minimum age requirement to play online. Not sure what it is. My son was clever enough to be 18 when he signed up a few years ago.

Edit: By "be 18" I mean entering a birthdate consistent with being 18. He's actually 14 and was probably 11 when he created his profile.
There is? I did not know that, I just assumed there wasn't since bajillions of kids play Little Big Planet.

When my kid created his account, I'm pretty sure we had to make a special effort to conceal his age. It was a couple of years ago and maybe I'm wrong.

So, I should go in and change his birthday to be consistent with that as an older age in his profile.

We do have the PS+ subscription - I purchased that under my ID. This was the thing that is 49.99/ year - I have his ID set up as a sub account under my account in the system. Do I need to buy a subscription for him as well? Could have been a fail there but I wanted to see any videos he may be watching etc.

Definitely not. One PS+ subscription works for all sub-accounts.

I recently ran into this, and bumped up the age restrictions for my kids subaccounts. PS4 parental control features are great, especially when compared to Xbox360.

Received this reply form PS 4 Support

If your son is using a Sub Account, that is what will prevent him from playing online. Did you sign up for an account and then set his account up through yours? If yes, that is what is happening.

Microsoft: 3 million Xbox One consoles sold

Microsoft said it has crossed sales of three million units for its latest videogame console through the end of last year, claiming strong demand as it looks forward to its next blockbuster game launch in the coming months. The Redmond, Wash., tech giant said the sales milestone was in line with internal expectations as supply has begun to catch up with demand.

Microsoft announced its numbers ahead of Sony, which also has a new console late last year. Its chief executive, Kazuo Hirai, may address sales in a Consumer Electronics Show keynote scheduled for Tuesday morning. The Japanese company also has a press conference today set to start at 8 p.m. EST.

David Dennis, a spokesman for Microsoft’s Xbox team, said demand is now following a “cyclical” pattern, dropping off somewhat following the busy holiday shopping season. Still, he said, interest from customers continues to be strong and retail shops are selling the devices quickly.

“We’re very pleased with the numbers we’re seeing,” he said.

The sales data is the latest indication the console videogame market could find itself in a period of continued growth following more than a year of contractions until this fall. Microsoft’s Xbox One and Sony’s PlayStation 4 are considered to be technological achievements in their own right, offering sharper images and faster gameplay, among other features. But analysts have said sales for this generation of videogame consoles may not mimic previous launches.

Videogame executives, meanwhile, have argued for some time that sales were expected to fall before the launch of new videogame consoles, and then rise following their release.

It’s still to early to tell who is right, but the latest sales data does offer insight into how demand is shaping up. The rest of the year broadly is expected to represent a rush by the game makers to entice the second rung of customers to buy the new videogame machines.

Both Microsoft and Sony are planning big launch events for new games. Among them will be “Titanfall,” a space-age war title from Electronic Arts which is being sold exclusively on the Xbox One starting in March. Another will be “Watch_Dogs,” a cyber-crime action game by Ubisoft, also being released around that time.

In the meantime, the fast pace of sales data reports will likely end, as Microsoft said it Monday would be the last time it reports products sold to customers, rather than its typical practice of reporting devices sold to retailers. The former requires Microsoft to call individual retailers around the world to glean up-to-date sales data. The company will also transition back to reporting sales data on a quarterly basis, Dennis said.

PS4 Parental ControlsWas this answer helpful?

[PS4™ system] Updated 12/19/2013
Learn about the robust parental controls available on the PlayStation®4. Parental controls are tools available to parents or guardians to control the types of content accessible by minors on the PS4™.

Getting StartedTo get the most of out the PS4's parental controls, you'll want to make sure the adult has a Master Account, and the minor has a Sub Account. The Master Account controls what is and isn't accessible to Sub Accounts, and different rules can be created for individiaul Sub Accounts.

  1. Log in to your Master Account. If you don't have a Master Account, this article has information on how to create one.
  2. Set passcodes. There are two different passcodes that you should set to make sure your settings are secure. Master Account passcode: This prevents other users from logging into your account to make changes to parental controls or view unauthorized content. To do this go to
    icon_settings.jpg
    (Settings) >
    icon_login_settings.jpg
    [Login Settings] > [Passcode Management].
  3. Parental controls passcode: This passcode is must be entered before changing any parental controls. The default code is:0000, and it is recommended that you change it. To do this go to
    icon_settings.jpg
    (Settings) >
    icon_parental_controls.jpg
[Parental Controls] > [Restrict Use of PS4 Features] > [Change Passcode]. Take care to remember your new code as the only way to reset it is to initialize the PS4 via Safe Mode.
[*]Sub Accounts
  • If you already have a Sub Account associated with your Master Account, you're ready for the "Setting Parental Controls" section below.
  • If you do not have a Sub Account associated with the Master Account, please refer to this article for details on creating a Sub Account on the PS4, and then come back to the "Setting Parental Controls" section below.
Set Parental ControlsClick an option to learn about its parental controls

Restrict games and applications that have age ratings

All PlayStation 4 games are rated by the Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) to help parents understand the content in a game. Applications such as Netflix or Hulu do not go through the same process but have age ratings associated with them as well. You can use these ratings in conjunction with the PS4's parental controls to restrict access to minors.

  1. To change the parental control level for games and applications, make sure you are logged in to the Sub Account you'd like to restrict. If you're logged in to the Master Account, simply press and hold the PS button on the controller, log out of the Master Account, and log in to the Sub Account.
  2. From the PS4's Home Screen, press up on the d-pad to get to the Function area.
  3. Go to
    icon_settings.jpg
    (Settings) >
    icon_parental_controls.jpg
[Parental Controls] > [Restrict Use of PS4 Features] > [Application] and choose the level you'd like to set. Once these levels are set, sub account users who have been restricted will see a padlock icon in place of the normal artwork for the game or app.
"Allow" means that there are no restrictions. After that there are 11 different levels available. 11 is the least restrictive and 1 is the most restrictive. The ESRB ratings that coincide with each parental control level are:

  • Early Childhood: (Level2) Content is intended for young children.
  • Everyone: (Level 3) Content is generally suitable for all ages. May contain minimal cartoon, fantasy or mild violence and/or infrequent use of mild language.
  • Everyone 10+: (Level 4)
  • Teen: (Level 5)
  • Mature: (Level 9)
To find out the parental control level of a game or application, highlight the application or content from the content area, press the Options button, and then select [information]. If an application or content has restrictions, the parental control level appears in the [Parental Control] field.

I gotta say Im shocked that the PS4 is selling so much. I don't know 1 person who owns a PS3. I wouldn't say Im a Microsoft guy, but I would say I'm not a fan of Sony. The online service has always been horrible, the controller is made for pigmys and the exclusives aren't that significant.

I just don't get it.
I've been an Xbox guy for the last generation. But I have to say that Sony's exclusives are better than Microsoft's. MS has the big one in Halo, but Sony has the Uncharted series, God of War, and The Last of Us which to me are better than any other MS exclusive. Gears USED to be good.

i have both consoles from last gen....

i was a ps guy, then became all xbox.

that being said i really like the ps4

Agreed. I thought sales would be slow as people just stuck with their PS3's and 360's for a little while longer. I didn't think people would be so quick to shell out $400 and $500 on the new systems.

I'm not too surprised. This last generation went on way too long. Granted, there is a bit of a drought in games for the new systems at the moment.

Sony has announced Playstation Now streaming service at CES.

Playstation Now streaming service projected avail summer 2014 will allow subscribers to stream top shelf PS3 games such as The last of us, PS1 and PS2 titles to their PS4, tablet, TV, Phone and computer.

In addition to allowing PS4 owners to play previous PS games the service will also have Sony's "netflix" and live tv service.

woah, that's a lot of units. Amazing that's sold and not shipped.
Very impressive, especially considering that it hasn't released in Japan yet.
Sorry I am just linking blurbs and stuff, but Sony is delivering a keynote at the CES and there really aren't any articles yet.

Oh and it is way more boring that E3 pressers.

Wonder how many they would have sold if it was actually in stock anywhere.

I also wonder if Sony is intentionally limiting stock in order to create the perception of a system that is so popular that stores can't keep it in stock.

I would bet that the $100 price difference is a bigger deal than is being portrayed as well. With money still being tight for a lot of people and teen unemployment so high, the $100 price difference is a pretty large amount when all you really get is Kinect as an extra feature.

Hmmm, I don't recall reading about any "live tv service" before. What's the deal with that?

My personal opinion is that they wouldn't hold the stock, getting as many in the initial install base is very important.

The only logical reason I can see them holding units back is to meet the Japanese demand which is estimated to be about 500,000 to start, but I think that they have a lot of time until the 2/22 launch.

I assume it is a pay service much like netflix except you can stream games, movies and live tv through your PS4 and other devices. Sony actually made a crack about who needs a HDMI passthrough as you just straight up use your PS4 as a set top box and DVR with this service.

So does it just act as a DVR/set top box, or does Sony have agreements with certain networks to stream their channels? That could be a game changer depending on what exactly it is.

Here are some more details on the Playstation Now streaming service. The Beta test is starting this month so I am sure not all the details are hashed out yet. But this was the intent when Sony shelled out a ton of money to aquire Gaikai. Sony wants to be the "netflix of gaming" streaming games in the manner that netflix streams movies.

Oh and sell your gamefly stock.

That's sort of what I was hoping would happen with Gaikai. I hope we hear more details (pricing, availability, etc) soon.

I'm going to try not to get my hopes up too much until we here more about pricing, what the game catalog will look like, and what kind of in-game performance we can reasonably expect considering bandwith and latency issues. It's promising, but a lot could still go wrong here.

Yeah details are sketchy at this point and there is a lot of speculation as to where the tv content will come from but no one knows.

I am afraid of the price. What would you pay for a streaming gamefly, netflix in one? What if you threw in Sony branded tv? What if it is comcast? Then what?

If the price is comparative to gamefly netflix and comcast for a month added up, then the value of one account to rule them all is immense. If it costs a lot more than all of its parts singularly it could be a fail.

Just something to get excited about. The one take away is it pretty much explains/guarantees why Naughty Dog was being so coy about the Last of Us coming to PS4. You will be able to play it on PS4 through the Playstation Now service but it will not be a PS4 game per se.

Honestly I held off on Last of Us wanting to play it on PS4 so I will try Playstation Now just to test it out and play TLOU.

No I was apologizing for my link, it was basically a writer at Kotaku saying "Hey Sony just announce 4.2 Mill"

Not a real article or anything. There is a little lag as folks whip up full articles on the stuff they hear at the show.

From what I can tell, everyone is reporting that, based on the CES announcement. Even if they're off by a few hundred thousand, it's still impressive this early with Japan left to launch to.

Unfortunately, I can only confirm 3 units sold. That's how many my store got on launch and we haven't gotten any more back in since. We've had Xbox One's available throughout Christmas (including now) and no one seems interested in them. We get tons of requests for PS4's.

True that it lasted awhile, but the systems both still have plenty of value. I can understand moving on from the 360 since it has no blu-ray, but since my PS3 doubles as my blu-ray player, I don't really see a huge upgrade need. Plus there are still plenty of good games out there for PS3 and 360.

Any clue on how to get in on the beta?

Now that I have an XBO, I traded in my PS3 yesterday at Gamestop. They gave me about $100 in trade-in credit for my 80 GB, fat, non-backwards compatible PS3 and two controllers. This included an extra 30% trade-in credit for pre-ordering Titanfall (there were a few other games you could pre-order for the credit, but I think Titanfall, Infamous and Lego: The Movie were the only next gen games included in the promotion). All in all, not a bad deal.

***One caveat for anyone trading in at Gamestop though: make sure you bring the original A/V cables or an HDMI cable and the controller USB cables with you for the trade-in or they dock you major $$$ on the trade-in. I had to go back home to get mine. :bag:

Also, FWIW, my local Gamestop had XBOs in stock but no PS4s. The guy behind the counter though said he preferred the interface on the XBO a lot more than the PS4 though.

Looks like my xbox one is shot. I haven't played in a about a week and just tried to pop out one game and put in another. The game that was already in there ejected fine. But now the drive won't accept any disks. It never "sucks" the game in no matter how far I (gently) push it in myself

So yeah, that's fabulous.

Had that happen once, I pulled the power gave it a minute or two and powered it back on and has been fine ever since.

I finally dove into the XBox Fitness app over the weekend. If you have an XBox Gold account, they offer a bunch of premium fitness videos for free (i.e., P90x, Insanity, Jillian Michaels, etc.). That's a really nice feature on its own, but the added benefit of doing the workouts through the XBO is that the Kinnect can track your movements and score you throughout the workout. It might sound gimmicky, but it really helped sustain my energy level.

The one downside is that the Kinnect still isn't that great at totally tracking your movements and there will be long stretches where it wouldn't score me at all or it would be overscoring me during stretches where I was dogging it. On the whole though, it's really a fantastic feature that Microsoft hasn't done nearly enough promoting.
