XM Radio Commercials - What's the deal? (1 Viewer)

SUPER ELITE UPPER TIER
Why are the commercials on SiriusXM so sketchy? It's always like someone trying to sell you gold, or tax relief, or some fake drug. And all of the announcers sound like they were picked at random as they exited a Yankees home game. No offense to New Yorkers, but your soothing radio voice comes off kind of angry and bothered. Not ideal for sales, really.

Yeah, I feel like they'll take whoever and whatever advertisers will pay them to host their advertisements. I've heard fake viagra ads, sports gambling touts, online adult store ads, gold buying, etc. It's like pop-ups, but instead of on a PC it's on your radio that you pay for. They're not bound by FCC rules (to my knowledge) since they're on their own infrastructure, so it seems like anything goes.

It's odd. I always feel a little dirty when the commercials come on. I just wonder why there aren't reputable advertisers on there? Like how come big name products don't advertise on satellite radio?

You don't want to buy Rocky Mountain Snuff from Randy White?

:lmao: That ad is on all the time.

ETA: I quit dipping a long time ago. A buddy had that stuff out one night, and I tried it. :X

His voice in that commercial sounds like he's trying too hard to do a southern accent. He makes Jeff Bridges sound like a girl.

I also enjoy that New Yorker yelling at me to not snore and ruin Valentine's Day. Some weird pill to stop snoring called Zyppah. "It's happy spelled backwards, jackass! " He doesn't say jackass at the end, but I always feel like it's implied.

It's a mouthguard device I think. If it helps me to stop snoring, I don't care what it is.

What about buying "dockside lakefront property in the foothills of Tennessee" or wherever?

Just got the trial on a new vehicle and was surprised there were commercials, thought that was the whole point of paying for radio?

Pretty sure I won't be subscribing when the trial ends since I can just plug in pandora and get the same thing.

What am I missing? Why would I pay for this?

This one is the worst. I cant change the channel fast enough when he starts up...

I mostly leave it on sports talk, and its full of commercials. But from what I understand the music stations are relatively commercial free? Could be wrong.

:lmao: Yeah, that's a great one, too. And that horrible KarsforKids with the lady singing trying to sound like she's a kid. Horrible.

Music has no commercials. But for sports radio, they do. Not sure why. I think the ESPN radio ones have commercials because they also broadcast over terrestrial radio, too. I'd love to have a sports radio option that was commercial free.

Actually I'm listening more to the music channels Grateful Dead channel is fun, but there are commercials there. They tend to all be a block on the hour or half hour but they defiantly have them.

Radio is super expensive, and XM is typically sold as an add-on to over-the-air personalities. I only ever purchased talk with a couple personalities, but basically the prices are so high unless you have a massive non-direct response budget, they have to be direct-response.

So they get the lower-end ads for the most part, more concerned with getting you to pick up the phone than with brand-awareness.

ETA: Something like 99% of talk radio is uber-conservative. As a medium, and in terms of personalities, it probably leans more far right than any other medium out there. So that's why the cheesy ads skew more towards gold and penis pills.

Agreed. I understand why ESPN does it, but why Mad Dog Radio or NFL Radio? As far as I know, those are both SiriusXM only channels, right?

Switch to Mad Dog immediately.

Where ESPN has commercials for 33 minutes out of every hour, Mad Dog has 12 minutes of commercial time an hour (with the power to play less commercials if they choose during a big story)

Other than Mad Dog himself who is unlistenable, all of the hosts are far better than Mike and Mike / Cowherd or anything else other than SVP.

They take more calls and don't have on as many guests. So you don't have to sit through athletes repeating the same 3 things over and over again about it being a team sport, and trying their best and playing their hardest and being blessed.

Mad Dog (except for Russo) Radio rules ESPN

On some of the music channels they advertise other stations and also run quick spots saying "no commericals." My son heard this the other day and said "isn't THIS a commerical??" Kid's got a point.

Hey what better way to promote that you don't have commercials than with a commercial!

The DJ's :hot:

Just play music, this is now what I was paying for.

I feel like XM is becoming the AOL of radio. Old people who don't have Pandora/Spotify/etc. will continue to use and pay $20+ a month for it.

Wow. I did not know that. I listen to the music channels very rarely. Usually only when a commercial comes on sports radio, actually. And I agree the DJ's need to go, too.

This makes sense. Appreciate the response.

I do switch between the two. My only thing is I'm not a big fan of call in shows. I don't want to hear Joe Schmo talk sports. I want to hear the guys talk sports. Riding into work, I listen to Mike and Mike until a commercial comes on, then switch to Mad Dog. Riding home, I don't like the Mad Dog show, whoever's on at 5:30 to 6:30. But I love LeBatard. But a lot of times, when they go to commercial, I'll switch to my iPod and just forget to switch back as I'm jamming out to some Skid Row.

Yeah - ugh.

Forgot about him. He's relatively new on the station
