Yelp is a freaking scam - small business owners agree? (1 Viewer)

Mad Cow

Welshers and Dawdlers Beware!
Most here know I am an optometrist and have been in practice for quite a while. I have a fairly busy practice, built a new building on Main St in my city a little over a year ago, and have a history of very good Google ratings. I had never even considered encouraging Yelp reviews, since it seems it is mainly restaurants.

About a year ago, I have a patient that was, and this is no exaggeration in any regard, the biggest (both literally and metaphorically) ##### I have ever had the opportunity to do an eye exam for. Terrible person in how she treated people. I iStalked her on FB afterwards and witnessed her saying terrible things about pretty much everyone that did not agree with her. Awful. She was and is vile.

You get that feeling that they will lash out in other ways, but I never saw it on Google, so did not worry. Then, on a whim one day, I see my Yelp rating. She is the only one and her review is full of lies and slander. Not wanting to let that stand as the only review, I begin asking a few patients that I know love it at my office to post Yelp reviews. Before long I have a few. They last on my page for about 2 days, then are moved to the "unrecommended" and hidden list that you have to search to even find. They use "software" that filters out reviews they say does not form a valid review.

I had a Yelp CSR call me a couple of months ago wanting me to advertise with them, because I have such a great Google rating. He is sure we can work well together. I question him on that, and he says we can talk about that system later and alludes to that if I advertise with them, they can all be moved up and out of unrecommended. I let him know that no way will I do business with an absolute scam such as that. A little Googling later and I see that this is a HUGE pattern with Yelp.

My question is, have other small business owners had a similar experience? This is worse than freaking Angie's list, since they at least do not drop positives if you don't pay their ransom.

Yelp can kiss my white hairy ### at this point.

I had a notion about bs reviews... but if they as a company are actually blackmailing business owners- wow.

Cali courts (well the 9th circuit) have stated this practice is perfectly legal.
I saw that. Doesn't make the practice any better if the law calls it "legal". They are no better than the neighborhood ruffians coming to collect protection money.

ETA the fact that they allow negative reviews to always show and censor only positive is reprehensible.

Do you have a chance to respond to the review? I have heard nothing but nightmare stories about all of these sight. Even worse are the groupon, travelzoo, etc. Horrible waste of money.

Honestly, yes, however, given her penchant for leaving these reviews, I get the feeling that if I did, she would just recruit another friend to bombard. Better to let it lie.

I used to write for yelp! Very little about the service is legitimate. The flip side is good ratings there will help your Seo and business, so spending a tad to "advertise" isn't compeltely I'll advised.

it's a huge scam. I work exclusively with small business owners and many of them have spent a small fortune with Yelp and seen very little return.

On-line reviews in general are terrible. At least Google is now making reviewers attach a name to it. With yelp, you can go on, create a dummy account and slander anyone you like. It's tough for small business because they can do a great job and then have one ####### client who destroys their online rep.

My consulting business works with managing online reputation for a few specific verticals (mostly in health care and home improvement). You are right that it sucks to be on the wrong end of a crazy person review. That said, there are a few things that owners can do to mitigate the damage and own the conversation a bit better.

Pay yelp a LOT of money?

The most likely reason that your positive reviews were filtered is because the reviewers created an account simply to post one review for your business and did not include any personal information or pictures. Reviews such as these are often automatically filtered in an attempt to prevent people from creating fake Yelp accounts to illegitimately boost or depress the ratings of a single business. The reviewers should be able to get their review for your business unfiltered if they add some personal information and a picture, review some other businesses, and perhaps contact Yelp. While people often get annoyed at Yelp's filtering software, it likely does more good than harm overall.

I would probably recommend posting a thoughtful response to the negative review and encouraging more patients to post reviews on Yelp if they are satisfied. Like it or not, Yelp is an extremely useful tool that many people use to select the businesses that they frequent.

It also may have triggered because you received a bunch of reviews all at once after not having many. I always recommend spacing reviews out over at least a few months so they appear "organic"

They were spread out over a month or 2, and some of them it was not their first review. A few have several. I see what you are saying, but the math just does not add up.

Can't believe Facebook hasn't latched onto the Yelp angle yet.

Facebook's angle is this - you only penetrate 12% of your followers (leaving that one out there as a softball). If you want to get into all of their timelines, you pay.

I work for a small business that just changed names and ownership. We have a history of amazing reviews. They told us they would be happy to just change the name of our old account to the new one, but for thousands of dollars. We were under new ownership and poor, so we're starting over with reviews.

Hello small business! I'm going to be juggling bricks in front of your windows. For just a bit under half the cost of new windows, I will be extra careful while juggling. For just over the cost of new windows,I will juggle bricks in front of your three biggest competitors stores.

you are a good egg bromigo take that to the bank

I suppose you could always send a cease and desist letter demanding removal of the negative review as long as it contains false allegations

Mad Cow, many of us here are your customer since we've bought glasses from you. (Thanks again, by the way, for the great deals. :tebow: )

So, I think all of us that have done so, should post a yelp review for you. I'll do so in the next day or so.

What's it going to cost him? <_<

Hah, I just went to your website and noticed Keerock developed it. Too funny. And I went to Yelp to read the review that the ahole gave you. Wow. I then went through the reviews she gave other businesses and I see what you mean. She has given a very high proportion of 1-star reviews.

I always laugh at the 1 star yelp reviews when someone talks about loving everything about their meal and then complaining about something ridiculous like getting a parking ticket and blaming it on the restaurant.

makes you want to figure out where this lady works and then leave nothing but crap yelp reviews about how horrible she behaves and see what happens after that bam i would never do it but man it feels good to think about it take that to the bank brohans

Yeah, Kee was great to help me. I appreciate any offers to counter her and will PM the info.

I thought long and hard about leaving terrible reviews about her at her job, but I really don't want to sink to that level. It was an exercise in restraint.

I think you did the right thing, and combined with your other customers leaving you good reviews to more than offset her crap, it's a better way of dealing with people like her.

We would love to

I will take a PM too as a satisfied customer. Your review of my vision plan has my wife getting the best pair of glasses she has ever owned.

I love the review on the chitty tatoo...anything you put on that lady would look the same......It is worth leaving a review just to laugh at the chick.

You now look like the eye dr to the nation on your site. You must have more tourists passing your store then your town gets annually.

I would say that you need to finish the website and put info into all of the tabs, but I am now jealous of your working hours..lol

brohans this thread is restoring my faith in people way to fight the crapheads out there bromigos

These review sites are mostly slimy.

I've dealt with a company called reseller ratings and the more reviews we got the more they would charge. It got to the point they wanted thousands a month and said if we cancel they will remove all the reviews we worked years to get. It's pure extortion.

The filtering Yelp does unless you pay them is gross. Sucks they are allowed to do this ####.
