You Are An Opposing DC Facing The Cardinals (1 Viewer)

how did defenses deal with this last year?

i would be tempted to say fitzgerald would be a bigger concern for defenses, but it is really almost a dead heat... with other offenses that have two outstanding WRs (IND & CIN), it is still clear that harrison & chad johnson are #1 threat (not wayne & houshmanzadeh)...

what would you do?

talk about pick your poison...

i'm not even sure this might not change from game to game...

I'd let the LCB play the left WR and the RCB play the right WR.

Kind of like asking which OT you want to have block Julius Peppers.

I do not think it's so much a question of who is your # 1 CB on as much as how are you schemeing. Like you said, it's pick your poison, but I think you keep them guessing. Change coverages, disguise coverages, use a lot of nickle and keep your safeties back. And most importantly, get after the QB.

It's an interesting question, but obviously, DCs have been able to contain these guys enough. How many games did they win last year? :lmao:

Fitz and Boldin don't play defense as well. Just cause the Cards didn't win, doesn't mean the WRs were contained.

I'm Jim Bates, the broncos DC.....I don't care who covers who, I got Bly on one side and Bailey on the other.

Put your big corner on Fitz...whether or not he's the better of the two is not as relevant.

If your corners are of equal size, I'd put the better corner on Boldin...but it's really pick your poison.

I think the Cards are going to be facing a lot of 5 and 6 DB sets until thye establish that defenses should actually care about their running game.

I put my best cover corner on Fitzgerald and I use my best remaining tackling/physical corner with rolled/shaded coverage onto Boldin. Those two are each great...breaking records for totals over their first few years... and I say that in an effort to stop what could turn into an 8 page sword fight on Fitz v. Boldin. Their skill sets, though, are different.

Boldin is just a (blanking) monster in the open field and corners are not know for being able to tackle that type of player on their own. That is not a slight on Fitzgerald. Boldin is just better in that aspect of the game. I keep Boldin in front of the last defender with a DB tied to his tip and dare/allow Fitz to go deep or run with my best man on man player. Those L-O-N-G throws are low percentage plays. Boldin in space happens more often and is what I would want to take away. I gamble my CB#1 is going to win more often than not; force the game away from Boldin, while daring the QB to look deep and cross my fingers I have a decent pass rush that day.

good post, both WRs are scary to defenses, but in different ways... boldin is more dangerous in the middle of the field, just a beast at RAC (had florida prep record for career combined yards at one point, i think, as running QB)... fitz is the aerial acrobat with jordan-esque hang time capable of making the circus catch, scarier in red zone...not that boldin isn't also dangerous in red zone, & fitz isn't improving at RAC, & both have extremely balanced skill sets as well as being luminously talented, but that is how i see their strengths...

some systems are zone & than of course point would be rendered moot... i was thinking of cases of defensive schemes where CBs are moved around for matchup purposes (but wasn't specific - my bad)... not too many teams i know of flip-flop the LT & RT dictated by where DE lines up...

to put it simply...

the better cover corner on Fitz. Prevent larry from touching it... then he can't catch it, easier said than done. If he catches the ball its over.

the better tackler on Boldin. Anquan is catching the ball, the question is how far will be go with the ball.

yac yards in '06

503yards - boldin(83 catches)

223yards - Fitz(69 catches)

Yards After the Catch stats says a TON for this question. Only 14 catches seperates them, and Boldin dominates with +330 yac yards!

And to elaborate more, i would play Fitz straight up and focus more help to Boldin.

Simple. Best CB on Boldin and double up on Fitz cause he's the better of the two.
- sigh - and Koren Robinson was better than DJax
I'm sorry, you lost me. Did I miss somewhere Fitz a hopeless alcoholic?
Nope - just that everyone said KRob was so much better than DJax because of his natural talent, where he was drafted, yada yada...Boldin is the better WR in Ari, even though he wasn't as highly touted coming out of college...

the question of who is better is certainly debateable...

i'm guessing if you asked 32 GMs, more than half would pick fitz before boldin... part of that because fitz is younger & boldin's history of knee injuries...

 Not much more needs to be said. Of course, this assumes that you're willing to move your corners around and that you've got the corners to do it. Otherwise, you probably ought to just play a Cover-2 and hope your safeties are quick enough to cover the weak spots and your team is physical enough to tackle these guys and keep the play in front of them.

It's really going to depend on what TYPE of #1 CB I have. Shutdown cover guy - he getz Fitz. Good cover guy who tackles well - that's Boldin for him.

I think the poster above who said attack the OL had it right. I'm less worried about bombs to Fitzgerald if Leinart is swarmed.

I wouldn't really worry about it much and just blitz the snott out of ARZ.

If AZ can add a playmaking TE to this offense then lookout!! G. Olsen? He would be a nice fit here.

I would agree that pressuring the QB is the key to guarding Fitz and Boldin. Otherwise, I think it doesn't matter. You will get beat by one of them.

Arizona ranked 19th in yards gained, 19th in points scored, 10th in passing yards, and 10th in passing yards per attempt last year.

there is a chance OL could be improved...

it started to gel some last season in second half, once latui was inserted & they made few other moves (replacing the center that has since been released)... latui year more mature, oliver ross is reunited with PIT OL coach russ grimm... & they have 1.5... there is slight chance joe thomas falls in their laps, & they might take levi brown... they could get a very good OG (not original gangsta, unless they make a move for pacman) in second... they did lose leonard davis, but he was out of position last year, & team was right to not overpay for a player that carried such a large risk of being an underachiever...

anyways, i wouldn't assume there will be no improvements by time season rolls around, with the draft still to come...

NYJ weren't as bad to start with, but plugged in some great players in ferguson & mangold & got some talent & youth in one draft...
