Elway calls a meeting with John Fox in his office...
Elway: Hey John, wanted to sit down with you and talk about our plans the next couple seasons.
Fox: Yeah that's great, let's do it.
Elway: Well with the health concerns you had this season and then the major disappointment in the Super Bowl...
Fox: I wanted to talk to you about that-
Elway:(cutting him off) Well I am gonna talk to you about it. We love what you have done for us but I think it would be best for all of us if you step down and walk away.
Fox: But I don't want to retire, I want to coach.
Elway: Well the decision is already made, we would prefer that you retire due to health concerns and at least take a year off. We are going to pay you the balance of your contract in full, Pat already said he would pay you out of his personal bank account for all your hard work here. We're not mad but we have a limited window here and we have to act quickly. By stepping down over the heart conditions, you can walk away for a year and then in a year say you are ready to return, teams will line up to interview you. We'll give you a glowing recommendation.
Fox: Who you gonna replace me with?
Elway: We have a couple of names in mind.
Fox storms out of the office and Elway rolls his chair back around and turns to face the windows as he picks up the phone to make a call…ring ring.
Elway: Hi Tony, this John Elway thanks for taking my call.
Tony D: Oh no problem John, I was just finishing up my morning daily devotion, tough luck yesterday in the SB, a couple bounces your way and it might have been different.
Elway: That's why I'm calling you Tony, we just got word that John Fox is going to step down as HC and we need a strong leader to come in here and work with Manning. You are on a very short list of candidates we want to reach out to...
