.the books by one author, the music of one recording artist/band and the movies of one actor, you can have everything they did but just those three. Why that is the case, hell...????

I thought this would be easy then found out that no it isn't, at least not for me.

Obviously  you need to look at those who had a large output. Maybe even bypass someone like a James Dean, Robert Johnson, Olaf Stapeldon because they did little in comparison to others.

Yep, stalling.

This really is tough.

Hell....

Author......Robert E. Howard  he is the king of the sword and sorcery/sandals in the sand...genre, I could read his Conan, El Borak, Brak Man Mon, King Kull, Solomon  Kane, Cormac , and short stories again and again.

Recording artist.....Bob Dylan, he has a ton of stuff, been at it a long time.

Actor....Marlon Brando, I not only get.....STELLA  STELLA, and.....you don't understand, I could have been somebody, I could have been a contender...I also get  THE GODFATHER.

Sorry...Louis L' Amour, Michael Moorcock, Robert Heinlien, H.P.Lovecraft, Lightnin' Hopkins, The Beatles. Muddy Waters,Tom waits.  Paul Newman, Humphrey Bogart, Kirk Douglas and Robert Mitchum.

Author: Douglas Adams. Can't get enough reading about life, the universe and everything.

Recording artist: The Smithereens. Haven't gotten tired of them 30+ years of listening to them, so I figure I can go 30+ more years if need be.

Actor: Kevin Bacon; not because he's my favorite actor but because he's been in so many movies that I would have a larger selection to choose from.

Author: Raymond Chandler- the Marlowe detective novels are the best combination of high literature and pulp fun

Music: Van Morrison- deep catalogue covering a wide array of styles

Actor: Jimmy Stewart has the best filmography so while he isn't my favorite actor, he has the best movies

It's a Wonderful Life, Vertigo, Rear Window, The Philadelphia Story, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, Anatomy of a Murder, The Man Who Shot Liberty Valence, Winchester 73, Harvey, The Shop Around the Corner, Rope

Author I would go with Andy Rooney. Not big on fiction.

Music would be Neil Young (which hopefully gets me Buffalo Springfield and CSNY too).

Movies would be De Niro. Gets me Mean Streets, Taxi Driver, GFII, Raging Bull, Goodfellas, Cape Fear, Casino, Heat... I'm good.

Author:  Tom Clancy:   From when I was younger to now and can still read almost anything he has written...

Actor:    Tom Hanks  (though reading the thread DeNiro has got me reconsidering this).  From dramatic to comedy to animated spanning multiple decades of some really good stuff.

Music:   Dave Grohl:      This was probably the hardest as my musical tastes have changed so much over the years...but ive always come back to rock of some sort...so I cheated and said Dave Grohl, that way I get all of this stuff with Nirvana and Foo Fighters and any other side projects.

Author: I have read more Stephen King than any other author but I will go with James Patterson since he is so diverse

Actor: Harrison Ford - Gets me Star Wars, Indy, Blade Runner (s), Jack Ryan

Recording Artist: R.E.M

I might go DeNiro as well, but if I change it to Joe Pesci, I get most of those great mob drama movies PLUS My Cousin Vinny for the win.  That said, I might still go along with James Stewart since I love his Hitchcock movies so much, plus I’d get so many others.

Music: tried to find a band instead of the Beatles...college favorites with large catalogs like the Smiths and Cure. Or high school favorites like Rush. But it all leads back to the Beatles at the end of the day for me.

Author: loved me some John Irving back when I actually read books. Not a fan of heavy fading and prefer lighter-hearted fair and Irving hits those notes well with Gump, Cidar House Rules, A Prayer for Owen Meany, etc.

I own a few of those Chandler/Marlowe novels, great reads and bummed I don't own more.

Author:  Stephen King

Music:  Paul McCartney (assuming it includes the Beatles)

Actor:  probably Tom Hanks but DiNiro and Stewart make it very close.

Ain't it what.....weird?

What chance would Bob Dylan, Neil Young,  Leon Russell, Dr. John stand in one of those talent singing shows, yep...none. But, they just have.....IT.

David Foster Wallace or James Joyce

The Beach Boys

Actress - Grace Kelly. Could watch her forever in anything.

eta* Herman Melville deserves consideration here and probably should win hands down.

What is it with The Beach Boys?  Yes I own enough to have a legit opinion.
It's really the '65-'66 output of Today!, Summer Days (And Sumer Nights!!), and Party!  -- along with Pet Sounds (no small thing) and Good Vibrations as a song.

They're responsible for a lot of the independent movement of the aughts, for some reason. Probably because of harmony as a Pythagorean concept. Pythagoras was actually one of the first on record about harmony and dissonance. Weird. I read it back when I worked for an author who was into that stuff.

I thought long and hard about The Beatles (who I didn't care about at all back in their day, I grew up musically). Did I goof?

Author - Dean Koontz - So MANY good books, many of which I've read 2 or 3 times.

Band - Judas Priest :headbang:   .. From time to time I even enjoy going all the way back and listening their first album "Rocka Rolla"

Not sure I can pick one actor .. I'm more of a  movie fan and too many to choose from (  Harrison Ford, Sylvester Stallone, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Bruce Willis.. Heck even some of Nicolas Cage's roles, Tom Cruise with Mission Impossible and some other actors mixed in.. )

Some years ago Rolling Stone Magazine had their 500 GREATEST ALBUMS of all time.  Pet Sounds (which I own) was like 3/4?  Hell...2?

Yes their talent is obvious but they are just too happy for me, that make any sense?

Author - Stephen King

Music - Robert Plant.  This will pull in all the LZ stuff, plus some of his solo stuff.

Actor - Tough choice.  I do like the DeNiro angle, which also leads me to think about Al Pacino.  Tom Hanks would pull in a wider range of movies.  Thought about someone like Kevin Bacon, just because of the volume of stuff he's been in.  Also thought about Matt Damon or DiCaprio for a more recent actor that has been in quite a few films.  But I keep coming back to Tom Hanks, so I would go with him.

Sure -- if you're listening to the earlier stuff than I mentioned. Then yes, I can see that.

But it starts to get dark around Today! and doesn't relent on Pet Sounds. Brian Wilson saw special psychiatrists for years to try and channel away the impact his father had had on his life. It's quite unsettling, actually, and if you listen to Pet Sounds front-to-back you'll find it one of the most plaintive albums you'll ever hear, IMHO.

In other words, it's not very happy. He called Pet Sounds "A teenage prayer to God."

He was obviously searching for something, both musically and lyrically.

Time to dawn the headphones and give Pet Sounds a real listen, something I haven't done.

Brian Wilson an interesting ah....situation.

I have a Robert Plant with Allison Krauss CD, in a word....wow~~~~

I am sure the local library has most or all of them. That is how I read them. IMO they are all good to great.

First one I thought of. But I find I get tired of foo after a while

Maybe Paul Simon or Jimmy Buffett but sometimes I'm not in that mood either.  Nowhere near enough material yet, but I can listen to Lindsey Stirling for hours.

Probably selle with Johnny Cash.

I don't know if I'd pick him, and I read non fiction mostly, but James Rollins isn't mentioned yet and I'd definitely consider him.

Probably go with Samuel L Jackson for actor.

Johnny Cash....cool~~~~~~~~~

Once heard a little three piece Filipino band (Navy) do....Folsom Prison Blues. Little guy sounded just like Johnny Cash.

When they took a break he walked right by me, I...."great job, you nailed it"....he looked at me, yep...couldn't speak English.

Cash a great choice as well.  but sometimes I just need something a bit more rock than Cash brings.

I was coming to post Jackson as well.  Talk about a diverse library.

Coming to America, Do The Right Thing, Goodfellas, Patriot Games, Jurassic Park, Pulp Fiction, Jackie Brown, Unbreakable, Kill Bill, The Incredible's, Many Marvel and Star Wars movies, Kingsman, The Hateful Eight......

and that barely scratches the surface

Author:  Stephen King

Musical artist: Jeff Tweedy (Wilco, Uncle Tupelo, Golden Smog, Loose Fur, Tweedy, solo)

Actor: thought about DeNiro.  Maybe Harvey Keitel.  Would go with Robert Duvall (Godfather I/II, True Grit, MASH, The Conversation, Network, Invasion of the Bodysnatchers, Apocalypse Now, Great Santini, Tender Mercies, The Natural, Sling Blade, The Apostle, Crazy Heart, Jack Reacher, to name a few).

Choosing by actor is tough, it's the director that makes the movie.

But if it has to be by actor without giving much thought my first thought is Robert Downey Jr.

That’s why I chose Clint great actor and director 😁
Great choice. IIRC @Otis is a huge fan of Ford Fairlane...or was it Pontiac GTO...Nissan Sentra??? Whatever, the racisty old man one.

I really love Clint and a ton of his films, might be willing to change my choice. RDJ was the first name that popped into my head.  He has a good combo of mainstream and indie stuff, and if I'm on this desert island with one actors catalog there better be some big budget popcorn fare and with RDJ you get most of the Marvel catalog.
