We might need a subthread for history podcasts... has anyone listened to the Bulgarian or Persian history podcasts referenced by Byzantium?

For Joe Rogan fans, you might want to check out the Onnit podcast. He is on more than a few episodes. Just did a great Q&A in Austin this last week.

SO the Dan Carlin history stuff has been mentioned many times, correct? We likey?

I just start the Genghis Khan series.

Fun stuff.

I haven't listened to those, but I like the subthread idea. I wouldn't mind a thread for history podcasts, books, shows, etc and have thought about starting one. I feel isolated in the book thread too, since it is primarily fiction in there.

Start it up.

I love that stuff.

It's good stuff. Wrath of the Kahns was very good. I went and bought the series on the Roman Republic (solid) and the Eastern Front in WWII (listening now).

If you're into social science, check out Christopher Ryan's podcast Tangentially Speaking.

He's been a guest on Joe Rogan's podcast numerous times.

One of my favorite subjects. Is this old enough to be listenable or do I need to buy?
Need to buy. It's like $10 for the series - well worth it.

The Longest Shortest Time

(parenting)

I Seem Fun: Diary of Jen Kirkman

Virginia Historical Society

(heavy on ACW but not exclusively so)

The Bowery Boys: NYC History

TLDR

Death, Sex & Money

The Longest Shortest Time

(parenting)
Just wanted to expand on this one. If you're a long time listener of This American Life, you'll immediately recognize the voice of Hillary Frank. This is the number one podcast about parenting, but it covers a lot of topics from postpartum sex to how to speak to teens. It's informative and highly comedic.

If there are any Littles who listen to Tony Kornheiser's radio show podcasts, they are now available immediately after the end of the show, not 24 hours later. The former program director who insisted on the delay got fired and Mr. Tony changed the policy.

The Eclectic 24 stream from KCRW.org just played Girl You'll Be A Woman Soon by Neil Diamond and Sugar, Sugar by The Archies back to back. :loco:

And I sort of enjoyed it. :oldunsure:

How did I go this long without listening to Comedy Bang Bang? Hilarious.
It is the best one in my opinion. I recommend anything with Paul f. Thompkins, James adomian, Lauren lapkus, or Andy Daly especially, though they are rarely bad.
I love the improv bits. Sometimes they are flat out terrible, but the humor derives from the comedians understanding the bit is terrible.
Aukerman is a genius. His wife Kulop has a good pop culture podcast (Who Charted) as well.

Another boring ACW podcast:

The Civil War (1861-65): A History Podcast

This is a husband wife team. Pretty straight forward linear / sequential walk through American history; I think they did about 30 podcasts (25-50 minutes each) to survey everything from The Missouri Compromise to the Secession winter. Sumter is done five parts; 1st Bull Run, eight parts; Fort Henry/Fort Donnelson was six. They're on Shiloh now - April 1862 is podcast 112. Grab a Snickers.

 His questions are hilarious.

Another one I'm listening to is "Guys We ####ed: Sorry About Last Night." It's two female NYC comics around 27-29 who talk about sex. About half the shows are interviews with guys that one of them has ####ed, the other half are just other comics talking about their sex life.

The show with Aukerman and his wife Kulap Vilaysack was pretty epic. She's Vietnamese and has typical uptight immigrant parents who are disappointed their successful daughter didn't become (or marry) a doctor. :oldunsure: Oh right, she also has a spectacular rack.

CBB from a couple weeks ago with Thomas Middleditch, Martin Starr and Kumail Nanjiani from Silicon Valley was pretty great. Middleditch was amazing.

The WWI series was great. The final one made me go back and relisten to 1-5. I downloaded all of the podcast & am in the middle of Fall of the Republic. So far I really enjoyed Ghengis Khan, WWI. Prophets of Doom & Thora Angela were good as well.

Still my favorite. I think you have to be a little older to appreciate but for me it's the right amount of sports/politics/news with humor always sprinkled in. His guests are almost always good (although I skip through some of the DC-centric sports interviews) and I find that I learn something frequently.

And the jingles are outrageously smart and funny - the recent one about the Old Man and the Swordfish was fantastic. The one about Big Rock Cocaine Planet was hysterical.

Maron really blew it with Obama. Let Obama talk the entire time. Really didn't get much out of it.

Perhaps it was negotiated but it actually would have been funny if Maron did live read commercials during the podcast.

We heard Obama. Not Obama on WTF. Misfire.

Nonsense. What exactly were you expecting?

Are you being sarcastic and that of course Obama talked the whole time? Well no I was hoping it went like every other interview Maron has done on WTF.

Maron's interruptions and putting the focus on himself are the worst part of his interviews.

What were you expecting Maron to do exactly? It certainly wasn't groundbreaking, but I thought that it was a pretty good, relaxed interview. Obama seemed very real and human (though perhaps in some way that was calculated. It was interesting that he said that the reason he was there was that he and his communications team thought that it would be a good venue to reach more people who had lost interest in politics).

I think that Maron's ability to handle it all calmly was pretty impressive.

Yes, Maron should have spent 10 minutes with the president trying to make some common connection to Albuquerque or explain why Obama should have been listening to the Stooges or Lightning Hopkins 30 years ago.

I thought he did a good job of trying to get under the surface of what makes him tick. Even if Maron pushed more, I don't think the President would be willing to share more to an interviewer.

You want to hear Obama share his thoughts on Lorne Michaels for half an hour?

:lmao:

President Obama, did you have that guy, that older guy in the neighborhood who introduces you to new music and all the cool stuff? Everybody needs that guy.

I thought it was really good. Totally stunned that the lazy media is just focusing on him using the n-word rather than trying to analyze some of the points he was getting across.
