So I've got 3 go-to's at the moment.
My #1 is Dan Carlin's Hard Core History, but the 3 month wait between episodes is killer. I went and found a torrent of all his older stuff and binge-listened to them last summer. (I then threw him a $20 donation because I know he charges for old episodes on his site) Great, great stuff.
A buddy of mine got me listening to 99% Invisible. It's a design-based pod-cast. Short segments, but they're interesting. Some of the older ones are very amateur, but I enjoy them, and they're frequent.
And of course...like basically everyone, I'm listening to Serial.
Any recommendations as to particular episodes of Carlin's older stuff?
So I specifically remember these to be some of my favorites:
Wrath of the Khans series
Prophets of Doom
Old School Toughness
History Under the Influence
Steppe Stories
These are also really good, but not my absolute favorites:
The Death Throes of the Republic series
Desperate Times
Judgement at Nineveh
Bubonic Nukes
Thoughts on Churchill
The What-Ifs of 1066
Punic Nightmares is OK, but the other two bigger seires, DTOTRepublic and Wrath of the Khans are better.
I honestly find his WWI (including Blueprint for Armageddon) and WWII ones to be sub-par. Blueprint for Armageddon is so dry. I feel like he just keeps re-hashing how horrible the trench conditions were and how much some of these strategy moves played a role in the battle. I get it...but it's not interesting for 4 episodes. I'll be glad when he moves on. His ancient history stuff is much better.
