I started Byz, but haven't gone back to it in awhile.  I think I gave up in the middle of one of the end of century recaps that would go on for several episodes.  The combination of the guy having zero personality and the narrative flow stalled was a bit too much for me (I guess I could skip ahead, but there's just other stuff that I'd rather listen to.)

I've been using the Byz podcast as the base and pulling in other history podcasts.  So far, that's just Bulgarian, Islam, Normans, and a little Russian.  Later, it will be the Ottomans, Mongols, Crusades.  I don't think I'll bother with Franks or Papacy, and I'm still hopeful that Islam will speed up and that someone will do Persian someday.  I'm not sure if the Ottoman or Islam podcasts will fill in the Seljuks or not - if not, I hope a good one turns up for that as well.

The new Hardcore History is pretty good.  "The Destroyer of Worlds" about the Cold War.

Great episode. Everyone should listen to this or something like it (discussion re threat of nuclear war) periodically because it's easy to forget about what a knife's edge we're living on.

Pod Save America is good if you want a lefty political podcast.

I don't know of a good righty political podcast to offset it. Best I know of is The Glenn Show on bloggingheads.tv, but that might be better characterized as centrist rather than as true righty.

I've never really been the political podcast type, but starting to get into them lately...

I just started listening to Pod Save America which Maurlie just mentioned, hosted by a bunch of former Obama admin alums --  Jon Favreau, Dan Pfieffer, Jon Lovett, and Tommy Vietor.

Tommy Vietor also hosts a sister podcast, "Pod Save the World", which just released its first episode.  Its focuses on foreign affairs.  The first episode was an interview with Jake Sullivan, who was Hillary's Deputy Chief of Staff and Biden's National Security Advisor, and who was involved in the Iran deal talks.  I'm looking forward to more of that too.

...Not a leaning podcast, but also started WaPo's "Can He Do That?".  Newest episode is about the immigration ban, for example.

I am a big Stephen King fan. I just started listening to a new podcast called The Losers Club. They are going through all of King's books chronologically and discussing the book as well as any movie or tv adaptations. They start each podcast with a few minutes of what is going on currently in the Stephen King world.

Its not bad but its not great either. As I listen to it I think I would be able to add to the discussion quite a bit. While they are all fans of S King they sound young and as if they got into King well into his glory days. Maybe I am being snooty but I was reading him from day one and I can tell these people weren't.  I do believe this has to do with their age. I guess I would like it better if there was someone my age on the show.

If your a King fan though it is worth checking out. I am listening to the second episode now- Salems Lot

Thought I remember one called Left, Right, and Center that was decent.  Concept like it seems - have 3 people that lean 3 ways talking about news/issues.

For politics, I like Dan Carlin's Common Sense.  He's not on either side, just anti-corruption on both sides.  He doesn't really say it, but I would guess that he voted for Gary Johnson.

For you guys with Iphones - do you use a different app for your podcasts or just go through Itunes?  I have an old Samsung Galaxy now and I use Podcast Republic for my podcasts, but that isn't on Iphones as far as I know (didn't see it as an option on my Ipod).  I was thinking about switching to an Iphone soon, but always found going through Itunes a bit clunky so I didn't know if there are other decent options to manage podcasts.  Sadly, it'a high % of what I currently use my phone for now, so I don't want to switch and be annoyed for a few years.

Same and same. My greatest dream is that when we die, we are reincarnated.  Seems like there is an equal chance of being born in the past as their is the future so there is still a chance I will get to be Humphrey Bogart or Cary Grant.

Overcast is the one I use. Can't find a reason to complain, and light years better than apple's

i was never into iTunes for some reason (I guess cuz Never had an iPod and have only had iPhone for about 4 years) and the native podcasts app is awful.

Downcast is excellent.  I found the native Podcast app to be awful.

Second downcast. I got it for a buck a few years ago and it's easy and intuitive. It also sinks between my phone and IPad.

Not sure I can really give you answer other than I just prefer the design of Downcast.

Depends.

I thought the same thing when TiVo(and the rest of the digital video recorders) came out. I had been watching TV just fine before so I figured, "What's broke with the way I've been doing it?" Then I tried it and could NEVER go back. But that will depend on your usage. If someone only watched live sports all the time they still may scratch their head as to why anyone would want a DVR.

Same goes for alternative podcast apps. Some people will like the new UI better. Some will enjoy the organization options appealing. Others will find it easier to find new content that they actually care about. Some will appreciate less overhead in terms of system resources being used. It all depends on the person and for the most part the alternative apps are free to try.

It's been a while since I used the apple pc app. So, i just cracked it open and it seems like it has come a long way from when I ditched it. 

Seems they have added things that were frustratingly missing before, like the ability to jump forward and back 30 sec, speed options, sleep timer, scrubbing etc. 

So I can't say that there is a real UX difference now. But I like Overcast and my whole library is there, so I don't really have a need to move. Plus, I'm not going to say Apple "stole" these features, b/c they are pretty basic audio playback controls, but to be behind the curve on them to the point that I had to change doesn't make me super quick to say "yea...lets flock back now!" 

From a playback experience, what I do remember is that there were times in the apple app, where I would stop a pc and then go back a few days later and it was at the beginning again. IDK if that's been fixed, so I can't compare. But I do know that was a main driver to me looking at other apps.

My fav is called "True Crime Brewery". The website is tiegrabber.com and they post a new episode late every Tues. evening. It's a husband and wife; middle age. Not sure what the wife does; the husband is a Dr. Each episode is about an hour

They start with a craft beer review, usually from the city/state the crime they are discussing occurred in. They then cover a know murder mystery (Dateline style). They do a lot of research and even with well know cases (I.e., Casey Anthony, Madeline McCann...), they always bring new, non mainstream info.

The presentation is NPR style; relaxed, but funny. The husband is the ultimate cynical, and adds a lot of good medical info. The wife drives the presentation, but has her own sense of dark humor, that keeps things light.

It's a really good podcast, especially for folks that are true crime, Dateline, Discovery ID... fans. Give it a try.

My main problem with it was that I could not figure out how to effectively save podcasts for later and create a good queue.  I have a lot that I want to mark to listen to at a later point, but I would lose track of them and continually have to scroll back through stuff to find them.

Also, I don't think that apple has a faster speed option, which I wanted to experiment with.

That may have been it.  Stitcher does have a 1.25 option.  I stopped using it for some reason though.

I use BeyondPod. Easy to use with a good widget.

Big fan of Tony Kornheiser and I enjoy his podcast. His Littles send in songs for the bumpers, some are pretty funny parodies and others are polished songs from semi-professional bands. Also can't go wrong with The Joe Rogan Experience.

Absolutely love the Waking Up Podcast with Sam Harris.  I was a little late to the game and behind on the podcast, so I have been going back slowly.  Really loved episode # 65 where he and David Frum talked about Trump.  For me eyeopening stuff and answered a couple questions. 

Also, people were talking about balanced podcasts for news - I stumbled on a podcast titled The Politics Guys, that is on the lines of Left, Right, and Center.  It's two guys (I believe both lawyers) on opposite sides of the aisle discussing the week's events.
