Youtube Competitor - Vessel.com (1 Viewer)

Interesting. Pretty fascinating to see them target the top content providers to YouTube to see if they can get exclusivity.

I want this to somehow mean YouTube decreases the ads, but then I wouldn't get those little nuggets of joy when a video starts without an ad

It will be tough for them to gain traction. As a viewer, I don't think a three day exclusivity wait is a big enough value proposition for me to leave youtube. For content creators, it's nice they get a bigger cut but ultimately revenue is dependent on the number of views, so it will take awhile (if it even gets there) to match the viewership and revenue youtube will bring.

But it will be interesting to see what bells and whistles they have to try to set themselves apart.

I dont think they are asking them to leave Youtube. I read it as ...post it to Vessel for 72 hours first and then post it on YouTube if you like.

I'm all for competition but it will be hard to go against google money. I hope they can carve a niche out to keep YouTube honest at least.

The reason I posted this was a friend was hired away from Hulu to be the website/app designer by Kilar when he left to start the company. This was actually a much different project when it started (something to do with being able to view magazine/newspaper articles). Didn't work out so they went with this.

Youtube isn't anything special as a site so if Vessel looks better and has access to popular content sooner then I can see it catching on. The big question is can they get people to start uploading their videos to Vessel instead of Youtube.

People post to Youtube since it gets the most views and viewers want to go where to the site with the most content. That will be the biggest hurdle for Vessel.

Or maybe the plan is to be a big enough threat to Youtube that Google buys them for a billion dollars.

I have an adblocker installed and haven't seen an ad in years.
Stupid question. Do they just show up as blank spaces?

It kind of amazes me that more people don't use ad blockers and that more people don't talk about the threat of software that blocks ads to major companies like google which make most of their money off of online ads.

Using adblockers is stealing!!

:grad:

yea.. work computer

ctsu- really cool that a friend of yours is in on this. Maybe we'll get a cool story.

I've had so many problems with the player on Hulu. Can't block the ads or the video won't play, same few ads over and over and over, ad fails to load or the show fails to load then I have to reload the page and watch a bunch of ads again trying to get back to my spot. Just a nightmare. I won't go anywhere near this site if it has a similar video player.

I hate Hulu, so I hate this company.
From what I'm told, Hulu ended up not being what Jason Kilar wanted it to be, which is why he resigned (and took half of Hulu with him). The media companies that own Hulu want it to be 'ok' but will make sure it never disrupts their TV business.

Up and running now. The first thing I noticed was how clean the interface is compared to Youtube.

Vessel just gave me a free year for being a beta user but I haven't spend more than 10 minutes there. Clean interface but it seems like you have to spend a lot of time finding something worth watching.
