GOT IT!

Ended up going with the Leather and also automatic start (why not, heat them seats before I get in dammit!). Some pics of her first moments driving home from the dealership:

SHARP!!! Nice choice man! I'm sure you'll love it!
Need to know some good (inexpensive) options to spruce her up. Saw some nice break light cages for under $100. Would LOVE black wheels, but unless I get a really good deal or find a pair of used wheels / tires not going to be worth it, especially since it's a lease.
If you're just looking for cosmetic stuff... go to quadratec.com and go nuts if you want. There is some real garbage out there though.

If you're looking for actual performance mods, let me know what your goals are. If it's a lease you're probably not wanting to modify it too heavily but that's up to you.

Will you be wheeling it at all? dirt roads? Easy Trails? Honestly in it's stock form that jeep will go anywhere you want it to.

It is leased, and for the foreseeable future I don't see any hard core off roading that would necessitate lifting it and all. But I definitely was to hit some trails and dirt maybe some beach though need to make sure the sand won't #### things up. Easy off roading and I could see gettin into a little more moderate but nothing beyond that. I wont be climbing rocks anytime soon.Mods are cosmetic - thanks for the link. Just accent type stuff like tail light cages etc. again, I'd love black wheels but just can't justify the cost of wheels and, in this color at least, the we stock wheels aren't bad.

ETA : quadratec was actually the site on which I saw some things. Big learning curve ahead. Fun stuff.

It was the deciding factor, actually.

I need some advice from you pros and hope to join your cult shortly. My daughter should get her license in the next few weeks, so we'll be in the market for another car. I would like to spend around $20,000 and have something "fun" for me. The guy that sold me my last 3 GM vehicles works for a dealer that also has a Chrysler/Jeep lot attached and they have a few used Jeep Wranglers in stock. Unlike most car salesmen, I trust this guy and would like to give him the business versus going the Craig's List/eBay/classified route.

The two Jeeps I am looking at are both 2010s. One has 25,000 miles on it and is listed for $21,500, the other has 48,000 and is listed for $18,500. It seems like a no brainer that the lower mileage vehicle is the better deal (before any price negotiation), as the lower miles me warranty coverage, less future maintenance, etc. Am I looking at this the right way? Also, while I trust the guy there, are there tell-tale signs that Jeep have been beat upon by the prior owner? I would like to know where to look for concerns in case I want to have them looked at by a mechanic other than the dealer's.

Part of the reason for looking at the Jeep, is that I want something that would be very easy to put my kayak on without a rack. I Googled up things and it appears that with a bit of padding, kayaks can be placed right on top of the Jeep (with the soft top pulled down) and tied down to the tie downs on the hood in the front and off the hitch in the rear. Anyone have feedback on if this is possible and if there a chance doing this would harm the vehicle and/or make the kayak a projectile?

Thanks in advance for any advice!!
I'm buying the 2010 Wrangler Sport and pick it up on Thursday. I drove it last week and wanted it bad, but honored my wife's wishes to not buy a car until my daughter got her license. She passed her driving test Saturday morning and I agreed to purchase the vehicle shortly afterwards. I thought I'd read up on the manual a bit (600 page manual :loco: ) to, among other things, learn how to remove the hard top. I quickly gave up on the manual and resorted to YouTube and think I've got it figured out, other than a few questions. Is the recommended torque wrench (#40) something that is readily available at most hardware stores or should I order one? Once the screws are removed is it better to remove the top and replace the screws or just leave them out until I put the top on? I don't recall seeing the washer fluid plug when I test drove the Jeep. If they don't have it, are they generic and should I ask the dealer for one or could it be specific to a 2010. I have tons a question about UConnect too, but I'll wait to see how easy pair is before I worry about this.

I've yet to remove the hard top - the two front panels are so easy and like 90% convertible feeling right there. That said, under the mat in the rear interior of the jeep, they have little slots for you to place the screws for storage until you put the hard top back on.

Here is a pic of my new (to me) Wrangler Sport http://www.flickr.com/photos/7474357@N04/8752238056/in/photostream with the top and doors off. I really didn't think I need mirrors for when the doors are off, but my 16 year old daughter asked to drive it today and was totally uncomfortable not having the side mirrors (understandably so). I bought a set of these http://www.amazon.com/dp/B001FAK28E/ref=pe_175190_21431760_M3T1_ST1_dp_1 for cheap. I am not going to pull and plug the mirror off the door, just swap these on when the door are off. From what I read, the drivers side mirror is blocked by the dash quite a bit anyway.

Just picked up a 2013 Sport Unlimited (Billet Silver). Went pretty bare bones, only packages were the Connectivity, Tow Group, XM Radio.

I love it. Had the hard top and doors off over the weekend and had a blast with the family. It makes me want to drive more which is funny because I 'downgraded' from an Escalade.

Just ordered a Bestop Supertop NX, side steps, and Smittybilt G.E.A.R. Tailgate Cover.

Next I'm looking for new wheels and tires, so any advice is appreciated. Currently running the stock 16" wheels and tires. Looking to probably get 17 x 8 wheels and run 255/75/17 or 265/70/17.

I work with a huge car guy. Builds his own hot rods. He really thinks I should go steel rims and I tend to trust him because he has never steered me wrong before. So that being said, I'm looking at purchasing the following:

Black Rock Steel Wheels Matte Black Finish

http://www.quadratec.com/products/92613_0350_07.htm

BF Goodrich Rugged Trail

http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp?tireMake=BFGoodrich&tireModel=Rugged+Trail+T/A&partnum=67R7RUGTTAOWL

Wrangler Silent Armor

http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp?tireMake=Goodyear&tireModel=Wrangler+SilentArmor&partnum=575TR7WSA&vehicleSearch=false&fromCompare1=yes

Like most, 99% of my driving will be everyday stuff but would like to off road at times also.

Thoughts?

It's something you get used to... with doors off I just turn my head and look out the side. Honestly I never really use my side mirrors now as a habit... just turn and look. That said, if you're not comfortable with them then by all means attach some! Harley post mirrors insert nicely into the door hanger holes too.

WELCOME!

I downgraded from a Lexus GS300 to my Wrangler. I LOVE my wrangler and enjoy driving it infinitely more than the lexus. Glad you're the same way.

Regarding wheels... the reason most suggest "Steelies" is because they can be bent back if you damage them in the rocks, whereas generally speaking aluminum wheels are toast once you bend them. Steel carries an added weight factor so if you're NOT going to be taking it in the rocks then don't feel uncomfortable getting aluminum if you want it. Aluminum is more expensive though.

Tires. those are both good tires.... however I like something with a little more tread for a Wrangler. To me a Wrangler with street tires is just kinda sad :) I'd go with all terrrains at least.... for me, the BFG All Terrrain is the best tire going in that category. Great wear. Great on road manners. Nice side profile look for an AT Tire... and I've seen those get some great traction off road. Several people in my club wheel with them in the rocks and do just fine.

Yes, you'll have a little more "tire hum" on the road but as someone who's run Mud Terrain tires (which hum a lot louder) for many years now... you grow to love that hum... honestly for me, the tire hum with top/doors off is part of the experience. VERY relaxing.

What are some good wheel / tire combos for mostly on road driving. Want versatility and I'll be honest, aesthetics also. Probably a black wheel and need to keep budget in mind since the wife sees NO reason for this and she's mostly right.

See above... BFG All Terrain is a great midway tire. Fantastic on road manners, good looking (side lugs, decent tread gap), and I've seen them do great things offroad.

If I was going to run a non-mud tire that is exactly what I would run.

On a stock height JK if you want a good sized tire I suggest:

When buying Aftermarket wheels for a stock height JK:

Get something with a backspacing of 4.5" or less (to limit rubbing of larger tires at full steering lock)

Get something with a 16" diameter (or larger) to be sure the wheel will fit over the brake calipers)

For Tires... The largest tire that will fit on a JK under the circumstances above is a 33" or 305 high tire and less than 12" wide.

Great writeup: http://www.wranglerforum.com/f27/largest-tire-on-stock-jk-heres-your-answer-142837.html

Go with the bigger tire assuming your gearing is okay (3.73 or higher... 3.55 is pushing it )

Thanks. These good with the lower ratio rear axel? It's the one confine I got because none were in stock with it. And... Wheels? Can't justify spending 2k on tires and wheels

You want a 16" Black Steel Wheel on 5x5 bolt pattern with 4.5" backspacing or less. You should be able to get all 5 for $500ish.

Tires are going to be ~$200-250 each. That sucks but that's the price for tires these days. Blame our government. I advise to at least EVENTUALLY try to have all 5 tires matching. It looks bad if not and more importantly driving with three 33" tires and one 30" tire isn't good for your driveline after getting a flat.

Expect to Spend just under $2000 for 5 new (cheap steel) wheels and tires. If you want to run on existing wheels for now you can plan on just stepping down to a 32" tall and 10" wide tire to avoid rubbing at full steering lock.

Koya.I'll add... if you're looking to do this on the cheap, contact your local jeep club (where do you live? NY or something IIRC?) and start asking around for take-offs. You're very likely to find someone who's upgrading from some 33"AT's to 35-37" Mud Terrains after putting a lift on. Those tires (usually 50-80% wear) are often available for a fraction of the cost.

There are several guys in my club to continually refreshing used tires every year or two based on buying other folks' take-offs. Sometimes they'll include the wheels.

Yeah, Long Island close to NYC. Appreciated.

SO MUCH TO LEARN!

After icon's recommendation and some research decided on BF Goodrich All TerrainT/A KO LT265/70R17.

After lunch I'm going to pull it into the shop and put on the side steps/running board.

Also ordered couple more items:

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B003CG9QFY/ref=pe_175190_21431760_M3T1_ST1_dp_1

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00651CLCS/ref=pe_175190_21431760_M3T1_ST1_dp_1

I also ordered some touch up paint for when I have to drill into the tailgate.

I'm excited. Jeeps are the Ruger 10/22 of the automotive world.

This thread is starting to suck. I have an '02 Camry I'm about to hand down to my stepdaughter. I have a limited budget to get myself a newer car for my daily driver. It would be a rediculous decision, but I've been checking carsoup for Wranglers. Of course with my budget I'm looking at something 10 years old and 150k miles. I'm telling myself that is not a good decision, but it should sounds fun right about now.

I'm never going to be the guy who says not to buy a Jeep, but I would be really wary of an older one with a lot of miles unless I knew the seller/ prior owner(s). Some of those old rigs really got the #### beat out of them.

I agree. It's really unlikely I get one, but I just may have to give myself a timeout from this thread once I star car shopping. It will be late July/August, and a convertible will be sounding really nice.

In the twin cities the jeep will be a lot of fun in the summer months. Do you have a garage? Jeep heaters are phenomenal but they take a few minutes to warm things up. Hard tops help retain heat but older jeeps are still not as airtight as most cars. That said the wrangler will be unstoppable in the snow. If you don't mind me asking... what is your budget. $10-12k goes a long way in the world of a Wrangler these days. I would suggest a 2003-2004 Wrangler (6cyl) if you can swing it. Should be able to score something in that range if you're diligent shopping.

They are infinitely customizeable no doubt. Be careful though... next thing you know your ride looks goofy because you have too much stuff strapped to it.

That's exactly my budget.

My first new vehicle was a '99 Wrangler Sport, 6 cyl, black with both tops. Loved it. I bought it brand new when I was single (ordered it at the factory, kept the window sticker that said "This Wrangler is being built for Bull Dozier") but then I got married and a kid came quick. Rear facing car seat didn't fit in the back so good bye Jeep.

Bottom line, I'm very familiar with that vintage Jeep. I'd love to have it again, but I'm nervous about stuff constantly falling apart. I know they are tough and you can beat them, but that's what I'm afraid off. I know I generally get rid of my cars when the start giving me more trouble than they are worth. When I'm looking at a car for sale with 100,000+ miles, I can't help but think the same.

I know the downsides of a Jeep this age as an every day driver (doesn't ride like a car, loud, gas mileage), but they don't bother me. Never having to worry about the snow (I had a blast in blizzards back in the day) and the removable top are awesome.

There are a few choices like this. I'd be happy with something similar, but worried about the unknown of what repairs are coming down the pike:

Re: used wranglers... check for scrapes on underside of skids/axles. Check differential fluid. Check for rear main seal leak. Check oil pan for being dented in. Check on top of the "Shovel" belly skid for mud/rocks. If you don't find any evidence of issues there it's probably not been beat on a trail. the I6 is a tank of an engine and shouldn't be an issue with high mileage. Listen for creaky (arms/bushings) issues when driving over big speed bumps or anything that causes compression of the suspension. Drive it at 55mph and feel for vibration in the rear end (driveline balancing). Hit bumps while driving at 25+ mph (not speed bumps but bumps in the road) and feel for "bumpsteer" (the steering wheel to shift hard..a little is normal) to check for steering wear/misalignment.

Unfortunately I don't understand most of that. I have a good friend that is a mechanic, so anything I bought I would bring to him to check out first. The driving stuff I could handle. I can take a look underneath and would be able to tell if it had been riden over stuff. Anything beyond that...nope.

Granted, I know some of the fun of owning a Jeep is tinkering with it. I didn't have a chance to get into that the first time around, but would like to the second. Going in though, I've got nothing.

And hey, thanks for talking me out of this!

Started pricing out a 2013 Unlimited Sport Automatic.

A dealer has this one on the lot, not sure if I should try negotiating it down to under $30k or just ordering exactly what I want and wait 4-8 weeks.

http://img407.imageshack.us/img407/7443/img20130522195750.jpg]Sticker

Things I originally wanted that it does not have:

* Supplemental Front Seat Side Airbags (is this worth the ~$450) and does it affect the doors coming off?

Options I wanted that it has:

* Alpine Premium + SiriusXM

* 3 Piece Black Hard Top (includes Rear window defroster; Rear window wiper and washer), this is different than the combo soft top + hard top and about $400 more - it rains a lot in FL, I thought being able to see out the back window would be worth it

* No heated seats (live in South FL)

* 24S Package (+$2047 Invoice) Vehicle with standard equipment; 17" x 7.5" aluminum wheels; Air conditioning; Chromed and leather wrapped shift knob; Leather wrapped steering wheel; P255/75R17 outside white lettering all-terrain tires

* Power Convenience Group

* Connectivity Group

* Black/Black but might get Deep Cherry Red instead if I order custom

* Deep Tint Sunscreen Windows

* Anti-Spin Rear Diff Axle

Things it also had that was not on my list:

* +$195 3.73 Rear Axle Ratio - does this affect gas mileage? I can't see it affecting it much since the mileage isn't that great to begin with

* +$445 Tubular Side Steps - don't know what this is or if it is good, is it?

The base price on sticker was $4k over invoice, oof.

Sticker shows $32835, would they be more eager to sell this for less profit or would they want me to order a custom with just the options I want?

Don't want to pay more than $28k, with the options above is that unreasonable? It is about $1500 under invoice of options on this model in the lot, but it has $640 in options that I didn't originally want.

Side airbags are cool and won't affect doors. IIRC they are tucked away in the B pillar between the two doors. If you really want them wait. The 3.73 gears are better if you're ever thinking about going for bigger tires. They are also a nice bump in resale for the offroad market for that reason. Tubular side steps.. meh... for mall crawling they're an aesthetic thing. If you like em great. If not, tell em they can take them off if it helps the 28k deal. The worst you could do is hold out a check for $28k and say This is what I'm willing to pay for that Jeep right now. If you guys are interested consider the jeep sold. If they hmmm and haw say alright, here is my card. If you want to sell that jeep for that price gimme a ring, and walk away.

Jeep posted a very cool pictorial of their concept vehicles over the past 15 years or so on FB (still can't figure out the linking function): https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10152188313546515&set=a.10152188298276515.1073741842.7037526514&type=1&theater

Being bald, I am torching my noggin on longer drives with the roof off so I bought a mesh island top and the windshield channel that should arrive today. Got the mirror on too.

If anyone has Sirius radio and has not renewed your subscription, you may want to turn it on. Sirius/XM is running a promo for two weeks of free radio for 60 stations. XM pulled some shady stuff with my credit card a while back so I will never give them another dime, but it is nice to have the radio for a while.

Okay.... You're going to freeze your ### off in the winter. There... that's all I got
I shouldn't have gone down this road because I am full on in Jeep shopping mode.

If I find a TJ with a hard top only, does it come with all the mounting pieces to put on a soft top if I bought one separate? I would assume so, but want to know for sure. I'd definitely want both tops living in MN, but finding Jeep ads advertising both are few and far between.

Yes soft tops generally come with all the hardware to mount up. make sure you get the year right and buy the kit that INCLUDES the frame hardware. you might need to buy the frame hardware seperate (try ebay or craigslist).

You DEFINITELY want BestTop Sailcloth Replace A Top or OEM soft top only though. Much thicker material = warmer = less flapping/noisy. Budget close to $600 for the full new Replace-a-Top withOUT hardware. Just FYI.

That hurricane is fantastic.

Those mesh tops will help a lot. There are times in the summer where I'll leave my soft top up with no windows in and doors off (safari top, essentially) to just keep the sun off my head/shoulders. If you're moving it's not bad but stop and go traffic in 100+ degree temps are rough with the top down. ;)

I was shocked when I saw it was from 2005. I couldn't figure out why that has not been brought to market by now. I would think that style, in today's market, would be a huge seller. I also really liked the retro look of the J-12: https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10152188303246515&set=a.10152188298276515.1073741842.7037526514&type=1&permPage=1

Next to market or Jeep will likely be a Pickup style Jeep most-likely based off the JK platform (expected 2016 Model Year Release). Jeep hasn't had a pickup since the 80's with the Comanche (My first vehicle was an 86 Comanche).

It will be interesting to see if they run quadra-coil (limits load capacity but increases capability off road) which has been the signature wrangler suspension since 1997, or if they'll move to a leaf sprung rear to increase payload capacity.

It will also be interesting to see how the engine situation sorts out. Jeep has finally started moving into Turbo-diesel territory. I'd LOVE to see a JK-platform based Pickup featuring the 3.0L Turbo Diesel V6 in the '14 Grand Cherokee. (240 and impressive torque at 420 lb-ft - 7200 Towing Capacity - 22 mpg city/30 highway economy). Certainly not trying to compete with the true workhorse pickups but more than enough power for the vast majority of the market.

First email in to a dealer, here we go. :bag:

My thought is that since I don't need anything until August, I can just watch whats available, throw out low ball offers, and be patient and get to know the market before I really have to move on something. If someone bites and gives me a great deal in the mean time, giddyup.

Keep an eye on private sales as well.... I see rigs going on forums for a steal.

I assume forum sellers will be those sellers who have driven them hard on trails? I guess I'm looking to find one that was used mainly on the road.

I'm checking the websites (autotrader, carsoup, craiglist) that are going to include both dealers and private sales.

Was reading about waterproofing a Jeep out of curiosity and stumbled upon someone trying to waterproof their sound system and amp since it is pretty easy to get caught out in the rain with the top down. Someone suggested next time they replace their audio to opt for all marine parts, thought that was pretty clever.

ICON, I have the two-door 2013 Sport. I do need a light top for the summer months so that i can remove my hard-top panels. Do you recommend Spider Web? Or is there another brand you think is better? The Texas sun can be brutal.
1 thing I read about the spiderweb is you can install it, then put your hard-top over it, so its always there ready for you when remove the panels.
