***OFFICIAL*** Deadliest Catch Thread! (1 Viewer)

They showed some clips last night when Josh Harris and Johnathan Hillstrand were on Leno. Tonight's episode is going to be rough. :goodposting:

Josh has really stepped up since Phil passed, I really think he could captain the Cornelia Marie in the near future.

From a maturity standpoint maybe, but I think he has a lot to learn about the engine room and he would have to earn the respect of the crew and I'm not sure that will happen quickly.

I think someone else hit it on the head when they said Jonathan will probably captain the boat, teaching Josh the ropes for a while. (I didn't see it, but Josh and Jonathan were on Leno last night.) If not Jonathan, then perhaps whatever captain Cornelia chooses until Josh is ready.

Can't imagine it is going to be easy watching his final moments

I would suggest just grabbing the box of Kleenex and putting it in your lap tonight.

We end up DVR'ing it as my wife insists on watching Hells Kitchen live so won't watch it until tomorrow.
MLB All-Star game is preempting Hell's Kitchen this week.

Get your Kleenex ready GB....

Yeah, Josh mentioned last night that Jake was doing well and out of rehab. That they were trying to put together another $million to buy the full share of the boat.Thats about all from that aspect.I think Josh would have immediate respect of the crew though just from all the crap and how he has handled himself. Still at a young age though I could see some mouthing off for a second to test him. With Freddy on board (if he stays after Phil) I could see him being a huge help on deck to ensure people stay in line.

There is a big difference between respecting how he has handled his father's death and respecting him as the captain of a 100+ ton fishing vessel. IMO he needs at least 3 - 5 years to season up before he would be able to captain that ship well.

The wife, who used to hate this show, has already prepared herself for a break down tonight. Glad I wont be alone!

I'll be crying with you

Riveting, to say the least, but yeah I agree, they've gone too far with some of it.

I keep thinking how Jake is gonna end up, and it's not good. The worst part for him is still coming, probably years down the road, and it ain't gonna be pretty. He'll never get rid of those demons. Not good. I hope I'm wrong, but that kid is a recipe for disaster, you watch.

Oh, and how about that one shot of Phil in his Captain's chair looking straight into the camera; brutal. That, and the one on the wall in After the Catch. Get me every time.

What have I been missing on After the Catch? I generally hate the whole post-show "sit around a table and talk" reunion shows, so I haven't watched any of them.

Not much. I agree. The best parts are typically some footage that hasn't been shown...no biggie.

I thought the handled it as well as possible. I thought for a second there they were going to show him actually die, and I've no doubt that they have footage of it. Mercifully, it was done as tactfully and tastefully as possible.

Yep, I just said this exact thing to a friend. Kudos to Discovery for ending it that way.

I'm not sure how much the storyline was an edit room concoction, but some of the events just before Phils death had me saying "wow" out loud. The huge storm, Jake going to rehab, Phil asking for his lucky necklace. i know a lot of it was pieced together to build the story. things like the "have i been a good dad" speech and the shots of Phil looking out into the mountain scenes. but some of it was eerie if true

Hug your kids. Hug your father. This one got to me. It was rough to watch mostly because we knew what was coming yet everyone was so optimistic about the big guy.

RIP Phil. Seemed like a helluva guy, father, and friend...

Watching ATC is actually worth it this time, it's all about Phil with some good stories we haven't heard/seen. One good part was how Phil asked to talk to his cameraman in the hospital. He (camera guy) goes in and Phil tries to talk to him but he couldn't be understood. So a nurse gets him to write instead. And he basically said that he wanted them to show the end of it. Gnarly.

The camera guy goes on to say how he often explained to Phil how you have to have a beginning, a middle, and an end to every story -- that without it all, you don't have a story. Clearly, Phil finally bought that.

So it just goes to show the Discovery folks didn't really push it too far after all, like some of us (me) had thought. Phil wanted it this way and that's all that matters.

A funny thing they just showed is how Phil loved to build bird feeders/houses -- like really intricate ones with stairs, furniture, fireplaces, etc. Classic! Also, I guess he had this perfect signature, haha, never would've guessed.

I was fine until Josh picked up the phone to call Jake..."I don't know how to tell you this..."
That didn't really affect me. Probably because they kept playing that line in all the commercials. Next week, when the news hits the fleet is going to cause major  for me.

 And the person I want to see more of, but I assume it was just too emotional for him, is Freddy. His speech to Josh after they took Phil off the boat was the best piece of television that I've seen in a long time...

That Johnny Cash song playing over the montage of the boats in the storm and Josh calling Jake to give him the final news was a awesome touch. In general, the music on this show, other than Bon Jovi's opening theme, has been outstanding.

Discovery has really stepped it up this year and made it more of a documentary than just a 1 hour show. Kudos to those guys, they do a great job.

Never saw the show before last night. Apparently picked a memorable episode to catch. Had no idea that Phil was going to die.

Rough life on those boats. I wonder how much those guys make.

At the end of each season they do a complete breakdown for the boats they film and show you what they just made.

EW had a great interview with Josh yesterday.

In anticipation of tonight’s episode of Deadliest Catch — in which friends and family say goodbye to Phil Harris — the captain’s son Josh Harris spoke to EW today about missing his dad, the outpouring from fans, and how he and his brother, Jake, hope to buy the Cornelia Marie.

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: You said on The Tonight Show that you are trying to raise millions of dollars so you and your brother can buy the other half of the Cornelia Marie. Have you set up some sort of fund in Phil’s name? Fans may want to help out.

JOSH HARRIS: Not yet. I really don’t know how to go about this stuff, and I really don’t want to depend on our fans to help us. I’m hard-headed. I’m trying to figure all of this out. I want to be able to do it on my own. My old man got the boat on his own. I’m just going to check out a couple of avenues and if that doesn’t work, we’ll go a different route. The last thing I want to do is beg for help from complete, utter strangers.

Talk about the outpouring of support from fans.

It’s been quite different. A lot of people will come up to me who have never seen the show, or they just started watching, and they are in a state of shock. They don’t even know the name of the boat. They just know the name of the captain who passed away. Everybody wants to give you hugs, give their condolences, tell you their stories. They try to comfort you in every which way. I’m very thankful for all the people who genuinely care. They don’t know anything about me or my brother or our situation but they really care. It’s really bizarre to me.

How do you feel about the way the show’s been edited this season?

I think they have done a wonderful job, I’m actually kind of shocked. I have not been able to watch tonight’s episode. I’ve had the copy of it sitting on my table for five days now. I stare at it. I saw the commercials for it a couple of nights ago, and I just broke down and lost it. My biggest fear is crying in public, and that was in public so it f—king sucked. I think the story is being told in the best way possible. The old man wanted to go out big. The only different way he had in mind was to be 70 years old, popping about 50 Viagras and having a 21-year-old Vegas hooker. That was the original way he wanted to go. But I think this way will suffice for him.

Leno showed the clip where you heard your dad say he loved him. What was that like to watch?

That f—ed me up a little bit. It’s a process, I’m working through it. He was pissed. He thought he was a failure and that he f—ed up. That irritated me so much. He’s such a good guy, and he had such a big heart. To be in the last moments of your life and think you are a failure, just broke my heart. It absolutely crushed me because he wasn’t a failure at all. He produced two good kids and did the best job he could with the cards he was dealt. We weren’t born rich. Everything we’ve got, we earned. It’s not like Discovery has handed us a house full of money. I think I got $1,000 and a fruit basket that I have never seen. They say they sent it!

Did you ever think about telling the cameras not to film that hotel room shouting match you had with Jake?

Oh you didn’t see the half of it, sweetheart. There was more, all right. They chose not to show it. They showed Jake leave nice and casual out of the room. It didn’t happen quite that way.

What’s your relationship like with Time Bandit captain Johnathan Hillstrand?

He’s been such a huge support system for me and my brother. I can’t thank him enough. This has not been an easy task by any means. I’ve been in shock and so numb through this whole thing. Everybody has been kind and gracious and patient. It’s nuts. I don’t know what to say right now except this whole f—ing thing is crazy. I miss my dad a lot. I don’t know how you are supposed to feel in a situation like this. It sucks. I lost my hero, my best friend, my buddy. I don’t know what to do about that.

What is the future of the show?

I can tell you one thing: that I’m pretty sure me and Jake will be battling next year. What weapons come out between the two of us, I don’t know. Who gets the first black eye, I can’t tell you. What I do know is we will be back in full force one way or another, hell or high water. I can see myself making sure that the boat sticks around — whatever it takes to make sure that f—er is running and my guys are employed, I will be right there every step of the way.

Maybe you can start tweeting from the boat.

Some of the guys at Discovery are really into tweeting. I don’t even know what this tweet thing is about. Apparently, you’re supposed to tweet “I’m taking a poop now” or “I just used three toilet tissues.” Sig Hansen [captain of the Northwestern] apparently is a tweet master. But Sig also has a mullet and thinks he can go on Dancing With the Stars. I’ll leave that sh– to the Norwegians and people with mullets. And Kim Kardashian.

Back when the producers first came to you about doing a reality show based on your lives, what did you think?

My initial reaction went a little something like this: “Uh, cool.” They put the camera on me, and I didn’t know what to do. “Am I walking funny? Do I need to do my hair? Do I look at the camera?” And they’d go, “Don’t look at the camera, look at me.” So then you find yourself talking and moving your hands really oddly. They just kind of freely float around. It’s kind of like a Ricky Bobby thing. “I don’t know what to do with my hands. The car was real fast and, uh….” That’s about how I felt.

Did you worry about cussing too much on camera?

F— yeah, but I gave up worrying. It’s how I talk. I don’t have a really good mute button, and it really sucks when I’m around children. I go do school appearances and talk to kids about drugs and stuff, and I seem to always drop the f-bomb by accident. The little kids will look at me and say “He just said f—.” And I’d be like, “Sh– you are right!” Then they go, “He just said sh–!” I’d say, “Dude, I need to get the f— out of here.” You wanna talk about a problem. But I got a good heart. I try really hard.

 I am paraphrasing:"Season every year""Crab every year""You can't catch a Dad"  then: "I go home, dead body"  I've been hooked on this show since day one, got the GF to watch this year, and we both thought it was a fantastic episode. It was a "weep" fest at the Jabroni household last night. It was tough to see the optimism with everyone and then it ended. Heartbreaking. Also, put me in the camp that thinks Jake will be alright in the long run.

Toughest part was seeing Phil the way he was in that hospital bed. Going from a talking human being with emotion and all of a sudden to the dull, half mobile person we saw. That is what was heartbreaking.

I downloaded the last few shows to see this unfold since I do not have cable but that was tough watching those episodes. The contrast is remarkable given the setting. RIP Phil.

 That was what I was expecting this week. I teared more watching "after the catch" then I did during the show this week. The previews alone for next week are enough to start the tears...

There was one piece of obvious editing, was wondering if anyone else noticed. When Josh was in the hospital room the last time, talking to his dad and rubbing his hands, Josh's beard was neatly trimmed into a thin line beard. When they showed him walking out of the hospital after leaving the room, he had the full face beard.

One of the funniest  paragraphs I've read in awhile:

Never been a big fan of the Wizard, or Capt. Keith. But classy move dumping the pot back "So Phil always has one to come back too" was beyond classy, and extremely respectful in my book. :pickle:

Keith is a waste of space. Dumping a pot full of live crab is the polar opposite of classy.

He told the guy to go check the level in the tank. I don't know if that requires shutting off the hydros, but the impression I got was that the captain was surprised too.

He made a comment that essentially said he was more worried about the pot than the crew IIRC.

Keith and Sig's brother Edgar are a couple of drama queens. Other than that, they seem okay.

Yeah, that was an ####### comment.

I know it's the biggest boat and so makes the most cash but it would still suck to work for Keith. And I don't buy his moments he has every now and then when he sheds a tear over something. 95% of the time the guy is a dbag.
