From a maturity standpoint maybe, but I think he has a lot to learn about the engine room and he would have to earn the respect of the crew and I'm not sure that will happen quickly.

I think someone else hit it on the head when they said Jonathan will probably captain the boat, teaching Josh the ropes for a while. (I didn't see it, but Josh and Jonathan were on Leno last night.) If not Jonathan, then perhaps whatever captain Cornelia chooses until Josh is ready.

MLB All-Star game is preempting Hell's Kitchen this week.Can't imagine it is going to be easy watching his final moments
I would suggest just grabbing the box of Kleenex and putting it in your lap tonight.
We end up DVR'ing it as my wife insists on watching Hells Kitchen live so won't watch it until tomorrow.

Yeah, Josh mentioned last night that Jake was doing well and out of rehab. That they were trying to put together another $million to buy the full share of the boat.Thats about all from that aspect.I think Josh would have immediate respect of the crew though just from all the crap and how he has handled himself. Still at a young age though I could see some mouthing off for a second to test him. With Freddy on board (if he stays after Phil) I could see him being a huge help on deck to ensure people stay in line.

There is a big difference between respecting how he has handled his father's death and respecting him as the captain of a 100+ ton fishing vessel. IMO he needs at least 3 - 5 years to season up before he would be able to captain that ship well.

Riveting, to say the least, but yeah I agree, they've gone too far with some of it.
I keep thinking how Jake is gonna end up, and it's not good. The worst part for him is still coming, probably years down the road, and it ain't gonna be pretty. He'll never get rid of those demons. Not good. I hope I'm wrong, but that kid is a recipe for disaster, you watch.
Oh, and how about that one shot of Phil in his Captain's chair looking straight into the camera; brutal. That, and the one on the wall in After the Catch. Get me every time.

What have I been missing on After the Catch? I generally hate the whole post-show "sit around a table and talk" reunion shows, so I haven't watched any of them.

Not much. I agree. The best parts are typically some footage that hasn't been shown...no biggie.

I'm not sure how much the storyline was an edit room concoction, but some of the events just before Phils death had me saying "wow" out loud. The huge storm, Jake going to rehab, Phil asking for his lucky necklace. i know a lot of it was pieced together to build the story. things like the "have i been a good dad" speech and the shots of Phil looking out into the mountain scenes. but some of it was eerie if true

Watching ATC is actually worth it this time, it's all about Phil with some good stories we haven't heard/seen. One good part was how Phil asked to talk to his cameraman in the hospital. He (camera guy) goes in and Phil tries to talk to him but he couldn't be understood. So a nurse gets him to write instead. And he basically said that he wanted them to show the end of it. Gnarly.
The camera guy goes on to say how he often explained to Phil how you have to have a beginning, a middle, and an end to every story -- that without it all, you don't have a story. Clearly, Phil finally bought that.
So it just goes to show the Discovery folks didn't really push it too far after all, like some of us (me) had thought. Phil wanted it this way and that's all that matters.
A funny thing they just showed is how Phil loved to build bird feeders/houses -- like really intricate ones with stairs, furniture, fireplaces, etc. Classic! Also, I guess he had this perfect signature, haha, never would've guessed.

And the person I want to see more of, but I assume it was just too emotional for him, is Freddy. His speech to Josh after they took Phil off the boat was the best piece of television that I've seen in a long time...

Discovery has really stepped it up this year and made it more of a documentary than just a 1 hour show. Kudos to those guys, they do a great job.

I am paraphrasing:"Season every year""Crab every year""You can't catch a Dad" then: "I go home, dead body" I've been hooked on this show since day one, got the GF to watch this year, and we both thought it was a fantastic episode. It was a "weep" fest at the Jabroni household last night. It was tough to see the optimism with everyone and then it ended. Heartbreaking.Also, put me in the camp that thinks Jake will be alright in the long run.

Toughest part was seeing Phil the way he was in that hospital bed. Going from a talking human being with emotion and all of a sudden to the dull, half mobile person we saw. That is what was heartbreaking.
I downloaded the last few shows to see this unfold since I do not have cable but that was tough watching those episodes. The contrast is remarkable given the setting. RIP Phil.

That was what I was expecting this week. I teared more watching "after the catch" then I did during the show this week. The previews alone for next week are enough to start the tears...

There was one piece of obvious editing, was wondering if anyone else noticed. When Josh was in the hospital room the last time, talking to his dad and rubbing his hands, Josh's beard was neatly trimmed into a thin line beard. When they showed him walking out of the hospital after leaving the room, he had the full face beard.

Yes, He doesn't want to be filmed or miced up though. They tried to get him to do or say something either in season one or two and he just kept working.
