Vegas (5 Viewers)

36 hours from now I'm on a plane to Vegas with wife and another couple.  Plan for now is:

  • Land around 8:30, check in, get some eats and drinks and see what is happening close to the hotel (The Delano).  Good quick/cheaper eats (or drinks) near there?
  • Saturday - no real plan, maybe pool for the morning after brunch at Yardbird.  Slot-crawl through the various casinos in the afternoon, starting at top of the strip and working our way back.  Maybe dinner/drinks in the Fremont area since it is supposed to be pretty hopping on a Saturday night.
  • Sunday - more pool time, probably see AbSINthe that night.  Need to figure more out here.  My goal is to hit it pretty hard this night and recuperate the next day.  Maybe dinner at the patio place at Paris that overlooks the Bellagio fountains?
  • Monday - rent a Cabana at the pool all day.  Later dinner at Momofuku.
  • Tuesday - drive out to Hoover Dam and Valley of Fire during the day, not sure what else to do until we fly out that night.
Any other suggestions to fill in the gaps?
If there's a night where you want a late night cheaper (happy hour) dinner and like hibachi, cab/uber over to Musashi. It's by Flamingo off of Paradise. Delicious food! I'm not a huge fried rice fan, theirs is beyond amazing. Happy hour menu is basically a smaller portion but instead of paying like $40 for a meal, it's about half of that. Starts at midnight and they do take reservations.

Momofuku was just OK.  The room was very nice but none of the dishes blew me away.   We ordered a variety of stuff off the regular menu and not the ssam or fried chicken specials.
I've made their Ssam at home and was hoping to try theirs, but with just two of us that might be overkill in terms of sheer volume.  Can you give me any other details about what let you down at the place?  Any other spots you'd recommend instead?

The resort?  Why would I do that instead of just staying at the hotel I already have?  I feel like Hoover/ValleyOfFire gets me the chance to see/do something different that I can't do otherwise.
Valley of Fire is great.  Red Rocks too.  GVR is just chill and in Henderson so I offered it as a place to check out.  Hoover dam is meh.

If you are staying at the Delano (which is on the Mandalay Bay property)--you should try to see the Michael Jackson One cirque show.  In my opinion it is the best show in Vegas by a wide margin.    Save the money on a Monday cabana rental and see One instead.   You should be able to find decent spots at a pool on a Monday without having to rent a cabana.  Also--if you want affordable but good food near the Delano- Border Grille in the Mandalay Bay is solid.

I liked Hoover, but only went on the way out to Grand Canyon.  I wouldn't have done it one-off.
Yeah sounds like a Hoover drive by and photo op and maybe visit the little museum on the way to GC, but no tour is right for us. So that being said, South Rim or West Rim?

I've only been to South, but everything I read says that is the one to go to.  You know all the pictures you usually see from the GC?  They're from the South Rim for a reason.  You can also go around south east a bit to get a great feel for the depth.

What is you had a 12 year old kid with you?  Hoover worth it?
If you're going to the Hoover Dam and GC, I highly recommend doing it by helicopter.  About $300-$400 per person, but it's definitely a lifelong memory and gives you views of the dam and of the GC that you can't see by car.  The car ride from Vegas to GC and back takes 4-5 hours just to drive.  Helicopter ride is less than two hours, you get to fly over the strip to end the flight, and be back at your hotel/pool for the afternoon.

Yes, it's worth it. One of those places that you hear about and tell yourself I need to at least see that. I don't suggest making a day of it, but ya, I'd at least go see it.  I was out there first week of April with wife and 13 and 15yr old boys and we went out there. Glad we did.

Did you do the tour?

Did you do the tour?
No. We just drove out there. Didn't take long at all. We didn't go in the visitor's center either. That costs. We just walked along the top and took pics from lots of angles and then went to the parking lot where you can walk out onto the big bridge and take some shots from up there. I just wanted to see it. I didn't care to learn all about it. I did some internet studying on it on my own time. The tours are generally first come first served and get snagged early - at least the ones that get into the belly of the dam.

All of them work. Dinner is great because of the awesome whiskey selection, but I've eaten there at all times and it's always good.

Going July 2-5. Playing in event #63, 1K NL HE. Hoping to avoid Legionnaires' disease. Yardbird better have the short ribs this time (sold out last year).

Can you drive over the Hoover anymore?

Last time I did it...it was awesome...but I know they stopped that after 9/11...just wondering if they ever opened it back again.

if you just want to drive across the dam, you can do that, but there is no access to US 93 on the Arizona side, so you’ll need to turn around and come back over the dam to the Nevada side.

We did brunch, and it was great. The chicken and waffles is quite good. Also liked the watermelon and farmers cheese as well as the shrimp and grits.

I saw cars driving over it yesterday.

Any tips for booking hotel rooms? Thru the property's website or a third party? In the past I've done both (Orbitz or similar) but its been a few years.

My friends booked their hotel/flight together through Expedia because it was "a good deal."  Turrns out the flight was on Spirit.  Once they started adding up the fees that airline has it became more expensive than the American Airlines flight I was on plus the room I booked directly.  They canceled the flight through Expedia and booked their own flight.  Then later they had to change their checkout date to make it a day earlier due to a funeral.  Expedia never got back to them to confirm it and they couldn't change it at the hotel front desk because it was all done/paid through Expedia.  On the day of their new/requested checkout they still hadn't heard anything from Expedia so they assumed they still had the last day in place and left their stuff in their room to go to the pool.  Came back around 5ish to the room to find out their keys didn't work.  Expedia did change the checkout for them and never notified them or the hotel until the last minute.  Had to get their belongings from security and as of the following day still didn't have the credit for the removed night's stay on their credit card.

So I guess bottom line is beware of some "deals."  I booked direct through the Delano and had zero issues.

Without knowing your particulars, my best advice is that if you have a good deal, you should book it. They don't last.

Polish Hammer is correct about the flexibility afforded by booking direct. Also, I have player's club accounts all over, which usually results in some kind of break on rooms. Having said that, a Cyber Monday offer on Vegas.com got me a deal on a mini-suite i never would have sprung for otherwise. Just be agile, is what I'm saying.

If you're a big gambler, book through the hotel.  They can't(won't?) cover your room if you book through a third party.

I saw absinthe which was pretty awesome.

Not sure I totally get the logic of not having legalized prostitution in parts of the city. I assume Tinder is just as good and free-ish for the most part.

I'm heading down in a couple of weeks. It's my first time, and I don't know what I'm doing. Room is booked at Bellagio, which I'v heard of and seems to have gotten okay reviews in the thread. I'm seeing rave reviews for Absinthe everywhere. It doesn't totally seem like my thing, but I'll probably pop in. I'm not a huge gambler, outside of the sportsbook, and there's 0% chance I end up at an EDM club. I'm all in on the zip lining, and I've heard that the tall guy from Ray Romano's show puts on a good comedy showcase. I'll miss Andrew Dice Clay by a few days, but I intend to hit up a couple of comedy places.

Any must eat restaurants? My strong preference is generally for non-touristy spots when I'm visiting a new city, but my impression of Vegas is one big tourist trap.

Extended my trip by a day.  Now going Thurs-Monday July 13-17.  Working around concerts - Tim McGraw/Faith Hill on Thursday night and Bruno Mars on Saturday night.  Both at TMobile.  Saw the Stones there last year.  Probably just fill in the rest with sportsbook, dinners, check out a few new spots like YardBird.  Staying at Elara for the last 3 nights with a Hilton promotion, probably just do Mandalay Bay on day 1 since I like their race book and can play it on Friday.  Also Phoenix (rock cover band) might be at Mandalay Bay Thurs late night.  May do some pool time briefly but not if it's 110.

Say hi to Faith for me. Love her. Have fun!
