Vegas (3 Viewers)

Currently booked for august 5-8.

Biggest concern is rental car shuttle. Have a p99 respirator that I will wear on plane and shuttle.

Plan to spend almost no time on strip. Two big hikes planned.

Where are you hiking? I’ve hiked in the area several times. I was there last October and hiked in Sloan Canyon Conservation Area. Not a bad loop with one technical portion.

I got an offer from Caesars that was five nights comped, an iPad pro for showing up and a MacBook Pro if I earned 5,000 TCs during my stay. I almost ####### went lol. Never got an offer like that from anywhere before. Had to be a glitch or something.
I looked. I have this too.

Cheap, but seem way to COVID risky.
Same here. Also just not the same without all of the restaurant and show options. I don’t think my wife will go back until she can use the spa amenities.

What are some good general Vegas twitter follows?  Not hardcore poker related per se but more like what the crowds are like etc..

Thanks.

@LasVegasLocally is a good one. For more info I would say check the trip reports on Vegas Fanatics and Vegas Message Board.

Thanks GB.
From what I've read it seems like people that are looking for a "safe"environment have been very impressed with how the Wynn is handling this. On the other end of the spectrum, Cosmo and the D/Golden Gate have been pretty lax with the rules though they've been forced to tighten up a bit over the last couple of weeks. Seems like during the week Vegas is a ghost town but gets busier on Friday and Saturday nights with people driving in from Arizona and California.

@VitalVegas is a great one... lots of daily content. Great blog and podcast as well. Scott is a bit of an acquired taste, but he breaks more news than anyone in Vegas and he's quite entertaining once you can get past his voice.

Also, as mentioned, @LasVegasLocally is great. Much less edgy than Vital Vegas, but good content.

@ClassicVegas, @VegasDrinks, @360Vegas (good podcast too), @JacobsVegasLife (good YouTube vids for info as to what's happening now)

I used to like Scott until he became a justaflubro. 360 Vegas is good too, forgot about them since I haven’t been listening to many Vegas podcasts lately😢

Totally agree. He let his own livelihood cloud his judgement. I'm only barely able to let that go for his good takes.

I feel like his position has "evolved" somewhat. Full disclosure: I've been a guest on the VitalVegas podcast.
Oh that's cool. He blocked me on Twitter for calling him out on that BS early on. I used to really enjoy his takes and sense of humor. Glad to hear he's changed somewhat.

Was there in the early part of the year and hiked to the Ringbolt Hot Springs. It was about a 6-mile loop but the hot springs were definitely the highlight. This was pre-COVID-19 so it was pretty chill to just hang in the hot springs, listen to some tunes (someone had a speaker) and just hang out for a bit.

Have also hiked the Old Bristlecone Trail (Upper to Lower). That was a 7-mile loop and the temp was about 30 degrees cooler than it was in the valley. Did that one last August.

Pretty sure they closed all the hot springs trails for covid. I am not sure about the AZ side, but the nevada side closes them in summer too because people are too stupid to stay out of hot springs when it is 110 degrees. Big fan of the gold strike ropes obstacles.

Now that you mention it, I remember someone saying that as we were at the hot springs. You're right, people are stupid.

I'll have to check out the Gold Strike route next time I get out there....whenever that may be....

I think one summer like three people died. Getting out of there is no joke. I have had to help entire parties up some of the ropes.

Got to be a hero to a group of slutty college girls. Sorry, did I say slutty, I meant sweaty. And remember, they couldnt climb up the ropes. The story plays out way differently in my memories. There is a lot less of the group.

Been meaning to post about my trip...

Wore a P95 on the plane. Had a whole row to myself and nobody behind me on either flight. Airport in Vegas was dead. Just surreal seeing it. Hotel check in was dead. Asked for the lowest room possible since elevator rides were the least appealing thing of trip and figured if I had a low floor I could just hold my breath. Only ended up with other people twice.

Went to grocery store and then total wine to stock up. Tried to find a book that had any kind of action other than the winner for the PGA championship. Ended up at Westgate and faded sergio, which worked well. Missed on the winner though. One thing of note was the posted hours for the sportsbooks right now mean nothing. They routinely just close them early. Stopped at Mandalay at 8:30pm, with plenty of games still on, and they were closed.

Sin City brewing was closed which is my favorite place to grab a beer. Ended up getting yardbird carry out two nights in a row. Place was packed and had no desire to sit in a big crowd like that.

Went hiking twice. Stopped at Red Rock casino one morning on way to place a couple bets and cash some March madness refunds. Place was packed. Was so weird to see considering the emptiness at other places. One time at Palazzo walking through to yardbird we stopped in the middle and realized we couldn't see a single non employee.

Lots of stuff is closed. Mirage, Trop, Hooters, buffets, bars, etc. Websites very poorly updated on closings, so definitely need to call and ask.

Resorts World international is in full construction mode. Place looks cool.

In and Out has drive thru only so the chaos is kind of comical. I prefer del taco so I got my food there and watched the hilarity. People just losing heir minds in a parking lot that has several ways in and tons of cars. Lots of yelling, hand waving, etc.

Non covid closing as it happened a while ago, but was sad that Bonnie Springs is closed. Mountain springs state park is closed due to covid.

Went swimming in lake mead. Was very warm and I was disgusted by how much broken glass was around the beach. But still beautiful looking out. Walkway along pat tillman bridge is closed. Same with Hoover dam.

Hit two nice parlays, which paid for the trip and then some.

Le Reve closed permanently at the Wynn. Award winning, really good show. I’m sure the first of many more closures to come, but still sad to see.
####. We were planning on seeing it when we were supposed to go in June. Put it off for too many years. ####.

Only "locals" place you stopped?   I could see the locals saying eff it and frequenting the locals spots and the strips places being dead.

Some other locals spots are closed too, so i am sure that just makes the others more crowded. I think there are 4 station casinos closed.

I'm heading out there in a couple weeks with my Dad, driving from Chicagoland. He's pushing 75 so he's in the high-risk zone for sure. Question: how stringent are they with mask requirements? My assumption is they aren't really worn outdoors, but are worn inside casinos. Is that correct?

Plenty of people were still wearing them outside, but plenty werent too.

Compliance was good inside casinos. Security was pretty good about telling people to put them on. The two biggest offenders for masks were women that were super done up that had makeup on and I assume didnt want to smudge. Saw several masquerade stick style masks. When workers were near they would hold it up, then immediately take it down.

The other issue was smokers and vapers.

FWIW I felt most comfortable at mandalay. Taller ceilings, wasnt very crowded, good airflow, everybody in masks.

The fam and I (wife, 2 HS age boys and dog) are considering a 2-month visit to Las Vegas this winter. The boys are distance learning for school and my wife and I both work from home. So rather than be isolated in wintry Minnesota, we are thinking it might be nice to spend a couple of months in a warmer climate (with the understanding that "warmer" doesn't necessarily mean super warm). The goal isn't to "do Vegas" in the way we've done in the past - but simply to rent a good-sized house there with a hot tub and backyard heated pool that we can enjoy while living mostly in Covid-induced isolation (but with some patio dining options that would be impossible up north).

We're primarily looking at vrbo and airbnb but are there other websites to use when searching for a 2-month furnished rental?

Are there any particular neighborhoods we should be targeting or avoiding if our goal is simply safe isolation?

Am seeing some good looking properties on Craigslist but I'm generally afraid of scams on that site. Avoid - full stop?

Are there realtors who specialize in this kind of rental? I would feel much better if we had a local rep/agent looking out for us.

Any tips/tricks/experience any of you can share would sincerely be appreciated. TIA.

I dont know if abodo does that type of thing, but I know they have a rep out there.

As far as area, we are looking to move out there and we have targeted the Summerlin area as a place we would like to be.

Use a "superhost" on ABB.  These are the ones that do it full time.  Ask for a discount if they don't have one

Stay away from CL.  Scams all over the place,

Just got back from five nights. It's...different without bars. I never saw the Strip. Rented a car and made day trips to Laughlin, Mesquite, and Boulder City. Went to a lot of locals places around town too.

Lagasse's Stadium closed permanently. RIP.
####, really?  We used to have a great deal goin' there.  Buddy of mine was connected somehow and got their "all you can eat/drink" VIP/couch deal for $300/person instead of the usual $500/person for March Madness.

Sports bars and I guess bars in general are just takin' it right in the ###.

I don't think I'll go back to Vegas for a good 2-3 years if not longer.

FF League I run is celebrating our 20th year next year and we've decided to have the draft next year in Vegas to celebrate.

So I'm looking for recommendations from FBGs for a hotel suite (or more likely an executive suite) that's big enough to hold a draft. Some considerations:

1. We have a huge economic disparity amongst the group, one guy will be flying his own plane to Vegas while some others will likely have to dip into their savings to make this trip work.

2. I started looking into AirBnB/VRBOs off the Strip and I just don't see the point.  We're in Vegas, so minimal sleep, no down time, and need quick access to casinos, sports books, cabanas by the pool, etc.

3. I've stayed at one of the nicer suites at Wynn Encore, which would be perfect, but I'm really aiming for a more mid-level hotel (New York New York, Ballys, Trop, etc.) so everyone can possibly afford to stay there (see #1) but I'm not having any luck finding that.

Any and all advice is appreciated!

Most folks can afford a regular room at Planet Hollywood. Howard Hughes can rent one of their boffo suites, with views of the Bellagio fountain, for the draft.

Does anyone have status with a casino? I would talk to a casino host.
