See "Phoenix" at the Apple Bar at New York New York. They play 5 nights a week starting at 10:30. One of the best rock cover bands evah - trust me on this one..

"Rehab", which has been a great Sunday pool party at the Hard Rock for years, is officially done. Seriously, what a joke. Hit it up last week and I might as well have been an extra in that MTV Jersey Shore reality show. Velveeta oozing from the pool. Endless, cranking rave music with average chicks and a million guys for your relaxing day at the pool. Just awful. It used have a nice, mellow vibe with a much better crowd.
Some porn mogul had an area blocked off for all his girls and a few of his friends or employees. That was entertaining for a bit. He ended up throwing out stacks of $1 bills to the crowd in front of him, watching them scramble. I will say the girls were insanely hot, and he was one old, ugly human. God bless him. He would cruise around, sweat stains all over his tight, yellow polo shirt -- belly popping out the bottom -- sticking his tongue down selective throats. Pretty funny.
I guess like any club, average life span is short...too bad, that used to be the best spot in Vegas on Sunday.

If by February, you mean Superbowl weekend, it will tough to get a comp'd record without a previous record of big play at the casino.

To update a little - The Aladdin is now Planet Hollywood. Had a comped room for the first week of the NFL season through another website and it was great.
Off strip - In Summerlin, the Red Rock Casino is great and offers many contests for NFL Sundays. It is part of the Stations group. Many locals hang out there, but the scenery was great. Very laid back, and had a huge sportsbook.

I had never been to Aladdin, and I was confused to see people bash it. It must have changed a lot then because PH seems really nice to me. I think I'd almost compare it to the Borgata in AC(although poker room doesn't compare). Good location too.

These were my rankings....they still hold....but I was recently in a room at the Sahara and was reminded what a ####ty room in Vegas is like vs. a nice room.

Posted in another thread, but a quick rundown of some downtown feedback from this past weekend:
Some further details on downtown having just come back from there:
There's a bunch of new pubs and bars down at what used to be the "bad" end of Fremont (East end) that are worth checking out. They've even gotten rid of the crappy 7-11 down at that end. The ones I visited:
Jillian's - Sports bar with a bunch of video games and a bowling alley upstairs. They seem to get a bunch of bands in there on the weekend but we didn't see any there. Decent place to watch a game.
Brass - Upstairs lounge/club. We stumbled in there at about 3:00 AM on Friday and the place was packed with local young talent. There were a couple of decent DJs (techno/dance), drinks were $4 and strong and, oh yeah, there was no cover. The place had a great, friendly vibe and is well worth checking out after hours. We passed by on Saturday and nothing was going on so the locals scene must move elsewhere. Someone else will need to check it out after hours on a Friday and see if that's a regular thing.
The Griffin - Hole in the wall lounge/bar even further East on Fremont towards the El Cortez (which has had a bunch of money sunk into it recently - it's still not the strip, but it's not nearly the janky place it used to be - more on that later). Anyway, we went in there a couple nights after hours and it was packed with people - most of them young locals. No music of DJs, but, again, an awesome late night scene
There's also another newish pub down there with the "Biggest pint glass in the world" but we never went in there. Looked nice enough. There also was a fish house place with an Irish Pub feel (Mickey Finn's I think?).
As mentioned, Jackie Gaughn has dumped a bunch of the money he made from selling the Plaza into the El Cortez. It's much nicer than it was even last year. You still get a bit of that Fremont flavor walking in there but not nearly as much as in the past - and for me, anyway, that's half the fun. There's a diner in there called "Careful Kitty's" (named after Gaughn's late wife), that is a fantastic place to pick up a late night meal (or breakfast in the morning). Cheap, and really good quality diner-type food.
The "nicer" restaurant in there also offers a $25 stone crab special on the weekend that wasn't bad at all. It's not the surroundings of Trader Joe's but a buddy who had just paid $75 for the same plate at Trader Joe's the night before, ordered up a plate for comparision and declared them more than acceptable at 1/3 the price.
Now, it's still the East end of Fremont so don't expect you won't see some shady characters. We had a late night snack on Saturday night and sat next to, and had a length conversation with, an authentic American pimp. Again, for me, it's that kind of Fremont experience that I love. _4_ still won't approve as he pays to hang out with the "A" list celebs but things are much better down there than they have been in years (decades?) with the highlights being Brass on Friday night and The Griffin.
Oh yeah - We also went into the club upstairs at the Nugget. It was pretty lame. Only a $5 cover and the bartenders and go-go dancers were hot (and friendly) but the talent was sub, sub-par and the DJ sucked balls. The balcony overlooking Fremont below the giant Vegas cowboy, was a cool place to catch a drink but don't plan on spending much time there.

If by pay you mean grease a buddy $20 to get in a club without standing in a line - yeah, I do that. If by not approve, you mean I roll my eyes that people travel all the way to Vegas to spend time in dumps with talent that is "sub-sub", then yeah, I do...but understand some people are more comfortable in that sorta environment.Glad you had a good time.

I paid nothing to jump the line getting into the Cathouse. $20 tip to jump the line and get into Moon and the Playboy Club. Zero to get into Spearmint. That said, I am pretty sure I paid more for drinks than you had to. But to me, a bit more for amenities is worth it.....

About a block north of Flamingo on Paradise....it's good...but you have to cab it there unless you have a car. Plenty of good steak places on the strip.

Are there any specific recommendations for a midweek trip? A buddy and I are stopping there on the way to LA for work. We'll get to Vegas Tue night (4/29) and leave Thur morning.
We'll want to go out, get drunk, and harass drunk women but probably not at someplace overly trendy.

Thanks, but I got Hooters for $35 a night. Great location (I like that end of the strip), and we're not too picky on room quality. Anyone ever stay there? I spent an hour or two in the casino one night playing video poker and watching a decent cover band.

I stayed there for a bachelor party, nice little boutique casino, small poker room with only a few tables. Food at the Hooters bar is cheaper in Vegas then in nyc. The quality of the girls working there was not bad. Surprisingly it's not all guys staying there, women have smartened up and stay there thinking there will be a good ratio of guys to them.

Do a sort on "price" and there are a ton of FREE shows.Is there a nightlife schedule somewhere that shows what's going on in all the lounges and piano bars each night? Thought I saw something before, but all I can find now doesn't seem to be current.I still need to see one of the midget KISS cover bands.

I was there all last week and I can't recommend a restaurant any higher than Lotus of Siam - it is at 953 E. Sahara -(East of Paradise). One of the best Thai restaurants in the country - after you blow a wad of money at the overpriced "name" restaurants at the casinos - you will freak out when your $100-150 tab(which includes a boatload of Singa) fills you up with awesome food.

PLAR DOOK O-CHA - Catfish - whole and soooo tasty

It's in a freaky place(beat up shopping center) - but when you tell the cab captain at the hotel where you are going - he will tell you - awesome place.
It opens at 5:30 and if you call ahead get a reservation - if not go early or a little later(you may wait about 10-20 minutes) - There is a lunch buffet but it is not as good as the menu.
