Vegas (2 Viewers)

Anyone have experience with the really expensive places (or their somewhat less expensive "cafe" counterparts" for a great / special dinner? One issue I have in Vegas is the overpriced food as compared to what I can get here in NY. For example, someone mentioned Jean Georges steakhouse - as noted, quite expensive, but I was way underwhelmed (a number of far better steaks, not to say dry aged steaks, here, or I'd rather even hit the Palm Steakhouse for taste regardless of value)?Le Cirque / Le Cirque CafePicassoAndre'sBouchonAlizeJulian SerranoSageAlso, any of the really well reviewed off the strip places worth it (fwiw, I find that there are far too many very high zagat grades in vegas - is it because people just think they are having a better meal, want a better meal or just dont have good food where they live?)Lucio RestauranteMichaels
I've said it about 10 times in this thread already, but Mix at the top of THE Hotel is spectacular - great food and view. The braised beef is one of the best things I've ever eaten.I have eaten dinner at Bouchon and it was also excellent. They had some fancy scallop special, and they were the best scallops by far that I've ever had.
Out of those, I've only eaten at Alize. It's amazing how small that place is. Cool view, food was very good. I actually didn't think it was more expensive than SW, Delmonico or any of the other nice restaurants we've eaten at. Mix was really good too. Excellent food, menu was somewhat limited though. Great view too, of course. Mix, along with all of the Manadlay restaurants, are on restaurant.com too, so you can actually eat there for a pretty reasonable amount.

ah, here goes:

I think it's impossible to give/receive advice about restaurants, as everyone's palate is different, and things out of the chef's/restaurant's control can effect the meal to extremes (i.e. a server having a bad day, a lost/misplaced reservation, etc...)

that being said, I can't really recall having a bad meal at any of the higher end restaurants (take note, I am not a steak nor meat eater).

A lot of people have given nice reviews of mon ami gabi at paris but I didn't think it was all that, way over priced and the food wasn't that good, i.e. stale croissants. again, take this all with a grain of salt since I prefaced this by saying my advice was worthless.

All that being said, the Eiffel Tower Restaurant at Paris was excellent. As was Prime at Bellagio. I would go to either of those again in a heartbeat.

I think your best bet is just to pick a nice restaurant while your there and just go  imo.

Food - check (undecided but got some good info)

Clubs - check / XS and Marquee

STRIP CLUBS - nice one with hot chicks but not a frat party. I'm goin with my wife for goodness sake.

Also, any of the really well reviewed off the strip places worth it (fwiw, I find that there are far too many very high zagat grades in vegas - is it because people just think they are having a better meal, want a better meal or just dont have good food where they live?)

That's awesome! I didn't know that. They have a $50 gift card for $20. Pretty good.My wife and I are going in a couple weeks. I'll be sure to use it. Thanks.

- Mon Ami Gabi in ParisAlso, any good sports betting tips for the weekend games?
Mon Ami Gabi is my favorite in Vegas.... but... where its december and it is a littl chilly out I could understand passing. He food is as good as anywhere else in Vegas, but the outside seating can't be beat.Have a hunch? Bet a bunch!

I have to agree about Mix.....we had a 5 course meal with wine pairing, by far the most expensive meal I have ever had, but by far the finest I have had. And the view is fantastic, even in the restrooms....unreal.

If you are looking to get crazy one of your nights while you are out, hit up the Artisan Hotel for After Hours. It's pretty crazy. http://artisanhotel.com/nightlife/
That sounds very cool, may have to saunter over if we are still conscious.Decided to hold off on a show - O is on hiatus for a couple weeks and we'd rather spend the money on a sick dinner (just made reservations at Picasso) and we hit up Broadway shows every couple of months anyway here in NY.

STRIP CLUBS - Help me out boys. Ive been to the new Hustler (underwhelmed, nice place but was not hopping, has it gotten better as it had just opened?) and have heard good things about Sapphire.

Looking for a place that is not frat boy like nor too crowded and is good for a couple to hit up.

Seamless is not around anymore, it is called something else - I know you were not asking, but am throwing it out there.I am a big fan of Sapphire, prefer it to Rhino, less hustle, same service. Met an ex-playboy centerfold from a few years ago working there, not too surprising, what else are those girls going to do with themselves once their 15-minutes are up?

Anyone ever do the helicopter ride over the Grand Canyon? Wife and I are heading out in a couple of weeks.
Did the one where they land in the canyon, feed you a sammich and some champagne. They also do the strip flyover on the way back to McCarran. It's one of the cooler things I've done on a trip. The only drag is that it's about a 45 minute ride each way. Also, you'll have to do a weigh in prior to boarding.
Do you remember the company/tour? I've read and heard from locals some are "scammers".
We used Sundance. They were legit. They provided a limo pickup and drop off service too.Yelp review
Ummm, scratch the good stuff I said about Sundance:
Five killed in crash of tour helicopter at Lake Mead

BY ANTONIO PLANAS

LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL Posted: Dec. 7, 2011 | 5:47 p.m.

Five people on a sightseeing tour died Wednesday in a helicopter crash at the Lake Mead National Recreation area.

The National Park Service said the helicopter went down shortly before 5 p.m. on the Nevada side of Lake Mead.

Agency spokesman Andrew Munoz said the victims were four passengers and the pilot.

He said the crash occurred about a half mile within the boundary of Lake Mead National Recreation Area, about four miles west of the Alfred Merritt Smith Water Treatment Plant near Boulder Beach. Munoz said witnesses heard the crash and reported seeing smoke west of the lake .

The remote crash site, about 30 miles from Las Vegas, is not accessible by road.

Ian Gregor, a spokesman with the Federal Aviation Administration, said the aircraft was an AS350 tour helicopter. It was manufactured in 1989, according to the FAA registry.

It crashed along a normal route taken by tour helicopters from McCarran International Airport to Hoover Dam and back.

Munoz said he was "saddened" that a search-and-rescue mission turned into a "recovery investigation" of bodies and helicopter debris.

The National Park Service, Las Vegas police and fire departments from Clark County and Henderson responded to the initial call. Officers with the Las Vegas police search-and-rescue team reached the scene by helicopter and confirmed there were no survivors. The recovery operation and crash investigation were suspended Wednesday night and will resume this morning. Investigators from the National Transportation Safety Board are expected to take part.

A park ranger was sent to the crash site late Wednesday to protect the bodies and debris, Munoz said. Information on the victims will not be released until the remains have been recovered and next of kin have been notified, he said.

The crash occurred on the western side of the River Mountains.

It was unclear what might have caused the crash. The weather was mostly clear near Lake Mead on Wednesday, with a low temperature around 30 degrees and winds around 5 mph. Munoz said there were no notable conditions that might have caused the accident.

According to the park service and the FAA, the aircraft was operated by Sundance Helicopters, based in Las Vegas.

A spokesman for Sundance Helicopters said the helicopter had been giving a local tour when it went missing. He declined to answer more questions.

Sundance Helicopters has had accidents before.

A September 2003 crash east of the Grand Canyon West Airport in Arizona killed a Sundance Helicopters pilot and six passengers. Unsafe flying procedures and misjudgment were cited as the probable cause of that crash.

In August 2009, the pilot of a Sundance tour helicopter returning from the Grand Canyon with six passengers was forced to land in the Lake Mead area after the craft's controls indicated an electrical problem. No one was injured.

The company gives daily tours to the Grand Canyon starting at $334, according to its website.

Another tour that costs $509 is described as a flight over Hoover Dam and Lake Mead before the aircraft descends 3,200 feet below the rim of the Grand Canyon.

The AS350 was originally manufactured by Aerospatiale and now by Eurostar in France. It is classified as a light-utility copter with room for a pilot, a co-pilot and as many as six passengers. It is used by military, police and businesses around the world and is marketed in the United States as the Astar or A-Star. It is about 40 feet long and 10 feet high. It has a three-bladed rotor and is outfitted with a Turbomeca Arriel 1SER engine.

The helicopter is flown by several Las Vegas tour companies and is used extensively by tour companies in Hawaii.

There have been several crashes of this type of helicopter in the past few years.

An AS350 helicopter crashed northwest of Reno on March 13, 2010, killing all three people on board. The copter had just dropped off a patient at Renown Medical Center in Reno and was returning to Susanville, Calif.

Fatal crashes of this type of helicopter also have been reported in Tennessee, Texas, South Carolina and California and in Peru, Australia and Antarctica.

Freemont Street East Bars - Haven't been downtown in a looong time and seems to be a growing buzz over the new bars down there.
Went down there on Monday night and did the zipline down Fremont and then stopped into the Griffin, Insert Coins, Beauty Bar, and the Downtown Cocktail Lounge. Great places if you're looking for smaller, low key, cool places to try out. It's now worth heading downtown for a night again.

Ok, so far Vegas is kicking my brain cells' ###.

First, the Cosmopolitan rocks. Has become my favorite place to stay in Vegas. Boutique feel, hip, more compact than most sprawly casinos. Great location Between Bellagio and City Center so lots of restaurants within a quick walk.

Came in thursday, went to Tao. Not the greatest scene but was packed and overall fun enough for a Thursday. Ate at Mario Batalis BB at Venetian. Pleasantly surprised. I had a great lamb dish my wife had a really good grilled octopus.

Last night we hit up XS at encore. One of the best club experiences we've ever had. Great talent all around (fwiw a large asian contingent), awesome vibe. Neither the crowd nor the workers were doughy. Packed but not overly so. Was a cold night so not much going on outside.

Tonight we hit up Picasso then Marquee and will follow up on those.

OK, Picasso didn't happen. Got hit with a nasty little bout of food poisoning, which had me bed / bathroom ridden for Saturday afternoon. That said, I rallied by evening and did hit Marquee.

Really cool setting - indoor mega club type atmosphere in the main room (there are a bunch of rooms, with all but one using sound from the main DJ). Lots of cool little nooks and places, but too dark (and crowded) inside for my liking. The pool area was hopping though - not as loud and not quite as crowded so was perfect for some fun (lots of heat lamps too, mind you).

Upstairs (literally, you have to walk up like 2-3 flights) there is a smaller room with a few pool tables and a more lounge atmosphere, so that was very cool.

Good amount of talent, tons of people - though I preferred XS personally. Would hit both on my next trip there though.

At TAO we were on the VIP guest list and paid no cover and skipped lines (well, had a very short wait with others in our position). We got there around 11, which I thought was early but damn, vegas seems to start much earlier than NY. Things inside were going near 100%XS had no guest list for Fri or Sat, so even going through a promoter wouldnt have helped unless they had mad pull. I don't recall if I just paid for me or if my girl also had a cover but either way well worth it. We were told that the best chance to get in was to go early, get stamped then we could head out and return, which is what we did. We got there just before opening and got stamped then checked the Encore and Wynn out for a bit. But again, things get busy early so if you dont want to wait in line for ever (especially if you are not just a group of hot chicks, and sometimes even then), you need to plan accordingly. We were on the Guest List at Marquee, but again this is subject to how full they are. We stayed at the hotel so assumed we'd go around 10, get stamped, leave and return... but holy ####, it was freakin packed already! So, we just stayed. I got a discount on my ticket and my girl got in free - whereas usually even girls have to pay like 30 bucks cover.Quick summary:Tao: Fun, but it has aged. Not the hip place, though a lot of talent. More touristy and more amateurs. The staff were rude at times as if their #### didnt stink when it was by far the least fun of the clubs - but still a really good time. We left around 1:30-2:00 am (thursday night).XS: My fav. One level, not VIP sections where chicks get in but only guys buying tables can follow. Staff was utterly classy. Expensive (15 buck drinks) but great music (dance/top 40), a very cool crowd. Large asian contingent fwiw - fine by me as a lot of those asian chicks looked fantastic. Indoor/outdoor but was chilly and a 90% indoor scene the night we were there. Stayed til' 3:30 and had a blast. Fun crowd and not pretentious.Marquee: The largest and most physically impressive - huge outdoor space by the pools, tons of full tables with service, different rooms though only one had different music. Crowd was the most diverse but the service was good overall. If you want a mega club, especially one that is heavy on the house music (kinkade was there as the dj) this is the place. For a slightly more laid back straight forward dance club, XS.

Heading to Vegas tomorrow for my wife's 40th birthday. It's just the two of us and my sister and BIL (good buddy too).

We are hitting Mix on Friday night (of course). Got a $50 gift card for $5 on Restaurant.com.

On Saturday we are doing the helicopter ride to the Grand Canyon  . I'm a little unsettled about this, but what the hell.

On Thursday we are going to Ferraro's for a good Italian dinner (got a $100 gift card for $9). I've never eaten there but have heard good things. Anyone have any comments on the place?

We are thinking about Bouchon for breakfast one day.

The free time will probably be spent playing blackjack and some poker. I will probably hit up the Venetian poker tournament at 7 PM Saturday night.

If I'm still alive on Monday, I'll let you all know how it went.

BTW, until the end of today, restaurant.com is having an 80% off sale. Use the code STOCKING at checkout.

Just booked for Jan 27-29. Mandalay Bay $120 a night on the weekend, AND get $100 resort credit? So $140 total for a Fri-Sun stay? Wow. Booked. Kid Rock at the House of Blues - booked. Used Southwest points to get there. Already have Raffles Cafe Restaurant.com certificates for breakfasts both days, just wondering which Mandalay hotel is best to use the other certificates. Sounds like you guys think Mix over Strip Steak, RM Seafood, etc???

Vegas on the cheap - gotta love it..

I got a 2-3 night free stay coming to me at Venetian/Palazzo +300 table credit, but will probably pass since I need to use it by Jan 31 and I prefer going to Vegas when the pool scene is open.

My thoughts exactly. XS is the perfect for me for the reason you mentioned. Hate how Marquee breaks people up into several different rooms.TAO is just terrible. It is a ##### to get in and it's super crowded all the time. You should definitely go back when there are pool parties. Those are more fun than night clubs! Last trip when to Wet Republic. Chilled with Jake Englberger, Meyhem Miller, and saw some dude totally PWN a chick in the pool.

Yeah, totally pumped to go when it is warmer. My wife is already planning her crash diet. (I would roll my eyes, but let's face it, I'd be in full support. Me on the other hand, well - I'm judged by the hotness of my chick)

Hate to let the air out of your joy balloon but your math is a little off.
120x2 = 240-100 = 140 :confused:
120x3 = 360-100 = 260
Hint: The pizza is round.
Not if its sicilian. Or grandma.

Had a fantastic time on my trip. Here's the highlights:

Went with my wife for her 40th b-day and our 19th anniversary. My sister and BIL met us there.

Stayed at the Venetian - I love the rooms and the feel of that place. The only thing I don't like is that the toilet is on the adjacent wall with the bed. It kind of sucks when you have to let one go and the wife is in bed. It comes through loud and clear.

Ate at Mix - Again, this place is just fantastic. I had the Filet topped with Foie Gras and truffles. It is out of this world. My wife had the braised beef which is also amazing. Both of those dishes are two of my favorite things in the world to eat. And, as someone pointed out earlier in this thread, Mix is on Restaurant.com so you can buy a $50 gift card for $5 bucks (assuming they are having one of their specials).

We also ate at the Carnegie Deli in the Mirage (one of my standbys). Awesome sandwiches. We had a dinner at Ferraro's, which is an Italian place just off the strip. It was excellent. I would highly recommend it. And, I got a $100 gift card for $9 on restaurant.com, so it was even better.

We took the helicopter ride to the bottom of the Grand Canyon. It was awesome. Thanks to whoever suggested it (someone in this thread). We had a great time, and it was something we will never forget. Now we have taken a helicopter to the bottom of the grand canyon, and to the top of a glacier in Alaska. That's pretty cool.

The last night my buddy and I played 4-8 HORSE at the Venetian. It may have been the most fun I have ever had playing poker. We played from about 7 PM to 3 AM. We were both a bit smashed, but I ended up winning $400, so it turned out great.

Overall, another outstanding trip.

Heading out for our annual trip March 8, the weekend BEFORE March Madness begins. We are thinking there will be just as much basketball to bet on due to conference tourneys, and probably better pricing across the board as well.

Has anyone done this? Is the scene dead compared to the following weekend?

:bowtie:Wife and I are headed up for MLK wknd. I have a bunch of Southwest passes, but we're actually going to try that new airline out of Mesa (Allegiant). The airport is literally 10 mins from my house door-to-door and the R/T cost was only $148 for the both of us combined. If all goes well, I'm afraid this may become a habit. The only thing that sucks is we're on the tail end of CES, so room rates are a little higher than usual. We're doing Flamingo, but Venetian just sent a promo email to me yesterday that has me considering. Thanks for the heads-up on Mix. I know you've mentioned it before. I'm going to grab one of those Restaurant.com certs.

Yeah, it's a weird time to be out there, period. Pools aren't open yet, it's an in-between time.

While pool scene won't be open, its hard to find a truly "dead" night in Vegas if you want to go bar hopping or clubbing. In fact, going during one of the more dead weekends (Dec. 8-11) the clubs were hopping, if we didnt have inside info or VIP wouldnt get in (and we went early) - so it's not like youll be all alone. But yeah, the pool scene is something else.

Had a fantastic time on my trip. Here's the highlights:Went with my wife for her 40th b-day and our 19th anniversary. My sister and BIL met us there.Stayed at the Venetian - I love the rooms and the feel of that place. The only thing I don't like is that the toilet is on the adjacent wall with the bed. It kind of sucks when you have to let one go and the wife is in bed. It comes through loud and clear.Ate at Mix - Again, this place is just fantastic.
Thanks for the info!My wife and I are going out in June for our 20th anniversary. It's been a few years since we've been, so alot of the Strip will be a new deal for us.

Question just popped into my head.

Have you or ever seen anyone actually win money from the slots machines at McCarran?

Yah seems to be so few payouts considering there's a decent amount of play on those slots. There should be a craps table at the airport. Pretty sure airlines would foot the bill because I can imagine a bunch of changed/missed flight fees.

Leaving tomorrow morning. :pickle: Cancelled the Flamingo res. Now staying at the Venetian which I won on Priceline ($120/nt if you're curious on winning bid). Got a car on Hotwire for $6/day. Always beats that long ### cab line and winds up being cheaper too.Have tix to the Phantom show which I got on discount from Travelzoo. Will probably hit the Tix4Tonight window for the 2nd night's show and pick from the selection then. Going to hit Macy's tonight to get something a little more stylish than my everyday office duds.Any good restaurant recs for the Venetian/Palazzo area? We ate at Lavo last time. Reviews were mixed. I loved my dish (some Bolognese pasta), wife hated hers.

Bouchon -- One of the better meals I've had in Vegas. Service was fantastic.
I agree with Bouchon. I had the best scallops of my life there. Really good. But don't forget about checking out Mix. One of you has to get the braised beef.

I'll have to check out the flights from Mesa. I know Agilent has some great prices - sounds like you got a good deal on the flight. And 120 for the Venetian is pretty damn good too.

Have fun.

Anyone use or talk to Patty of late? I sent her an e-mail last week and she didnt respond?
I used her 3-4 months back. Initially it took her a couple days to respond. Worth waiting however, as she is every bit the hookup she is described to be in this thread...and then some.
