Bill's To Return As Gansevoort Las Vegas In January 2014

March 15, 2013 at 8:46 PM | by 702Becca | Comments (5)

First, Caesars Entertainment gave a tower to Nobu. Now, it's giving an entire building to Gansevoort Hotel Group.

USA Today reports that Gansevoort Las Vegas will replace the now shuttered Bill's which closed on February 5 for renovations. Caesars is spending $185 million to remodel the entire hotel-casino before turning it over to the New York-based company for a reported January 2014 debut.

The renovation will bring a new exterior, casino floor, dining, and rooms while adding a spa (likely a new addition to Gansevoort's established Exhale brand) as well as an already much talked about rooftop pool experience. The 10th floor pool deck will be run by Victor Drai whose long-running nightclub, Drai's After Hours, will return "to its former location in the hotel's basement," according to USA Today.

Rooms at Gansevoort Las Vegas will start at $249 a night. A rendering shown below reveals accommodations with wood (or wood-like) floors, a brick-lined feature wall, a flat-screen TV, what looks to be a bedside smart panel for technology and a bright purple headboard and accent chair.

Additionally, Total Rewards members may be happy to hear the hotel-casino will finally be included in the program.

If Gansevoort is not a familiar brand for you, it operates two hotels in New York and another in Turks and Caicos. It's also hot among the celebrity set, attracting such stars as Beyonce, Prince, Brangelina, and more.

So does the $20 tip to the lady at the front desk during check-in still work for room upgrades? I'm staying at The Hotel at Mandalay this weekend (arriving Friday). Has inflation bumped this up to $40?

Not sure what upgrade you'd expect already staying at The Hotel. $20 may get you an upgraded view I guess. With the cheaper hotels $20 is enough to get a suite.

The last time I was there in 2008 (a while, I know), we had booked a standard room at The Hotel and were upgraded to a high floor room with a great view of the strip.

Just make sure you get up to Mix for a drink to check out the view after dark.

I did that on the last trip and already have plans to do it again. It's fantastic up there.

Will be at the Hilton/LVH all day Thurs/Friday wearing some sort of Indiana shirt/hat (gray/crimson) with black and gray shorts. Will be in the auditorium. Feel free to say hi!

Re $20 bill trick, couple friends did this at Rio a month ago, got upgraded to a two story suite.

Update: I just received an e-mail from Mandalay Bay offering to upgrade me to the V-Suite (the next higher room) for $10 more per night. That would come out to being an extra $10 + tax than if I try to roll with the $20 trick. This might be worth it considering it's a busy weekend and I'm not checking in until late afternoon/early evening on Friday.

Hmmm. I'm staying at the Rio. Might have to give it a try.

If the hotel is booked, how well will the $20 trick work?

ETA by booked I mean full.

I booked the upgrade. I'll still probably pull the $20 trick at check-in to ensure a high floor and strip view (don't want to be stuck with the mountains or pool view).

Post-weekend update: It was a disappointing weekend at The Hotel. It started with trying the $20 tip at check-in Friday night even though I had already booked an upgraded suite prior to arrival. I specifically asked the check-in attendant for a higher floor room. Not only did he not accommodate me by putting us on the 13th floor (he said nothing better was available for a 3-night stay), but he also informed me that there was some sort of glitch when I booked the reservation online and that my credit card had been charged for 3 separate room reservations. This took 20 minutes of him going back and forth with his supervisor to supposedly straighten out the charges. Oh, and no other freebies or discounts were offered. He asked if I wanted my $20 back. I should have said yes. :wall:On Saturday, our hot water in the shower gave out on two separate occasions. We reported the problem and again asked for a different room, but were denied. At check-out today, the bill total showed a $1,100 credit from the screwed-up extra deposits. The only problem was that credit never actually hit my credit card. And there was no indication that the $280 from my initial deposit made in January was ever applied to this bill. I'm still waiting for the accounting department to get back to me.All in all, The Hotel just seemed like a mess. Mandalay/The Hotel has always been my first choice when looking to stay somewhere nice in Vegas, but in the future I'll likely be looking at going to one of the City Center hotels instead.

I need some thoughts on a couple restaurants and possibly some additional recommendations...

Sage at the Aria: I've seen good reviews of this place. We're looking to go out one night for a "nice" dinner, but I don't want to break the bank. The $89 tasting menu looks about right in terms of price, but I'd be willing to spend a little bit more if there was something really intriguing or trendy out there. Any opinions?

Raku: I've heard that is also a really hot spot for foodies. My girlfriend and I have access to good Japanese izakayas from where we're from, so is this really worth it?

I also want to hit up Hofbrauhaus at least for a little bit. I've only been once, but it was a good time and the sausages and beer were solid.

I'd welcome any other suggestions for both a $150-175/head and a $50-75/head meals.

Restaurant update...Raku was great. We did the $75 tasting menu and were thoroughly satisfied. Make sure you make reservations ahead of time. The dodgy strip mall location in Chinatown adds to the allure a little bit. The dive bar across the way, Kilroy's, is actually pretty cool with some good bartenders, but the lack of windows in the bar (literally NO windows) gives off an insanely creepy vibe. Even gay bars and S&M shops have windows that are least blacked out. Kilroy's - NO windows.

Hofbrauhaus was fun as always, but I did not realize that last call is at 11:20. This is ridiculous for a place like this.

The Wicked Spoon at the Cosmopolitan is an insanely good buffet. I'd recommend lunch over dinner b/c eating that much food will wreck the rest of your night.

I ate for the second time at Aureole at Mandalay. It still ranks as one of the best dining experiences I've ever had. Fantastic from start to finish.

Oh, and the best attraction in Vegas for the next few weeks is Def Leppard's residency at the Hard Rock. They're playing the entire Hysteria album from start to finish. They also start the show as their own opening act by playing a lot of older, less heralded, but harder stuff. I've seen them a bunch of times and this was the best show I've seen and these are the best set lists they've ever done.

Try calling there and ask to speak to one of their managers about what happen. Complain about what happened and say you're never staying there again etc. Chances you get comped for something for a few nights are pretty good. I had a friend that had an issue where when he stayed at Venetian, he booked a room and was told it was a room good for the poker rate. When he was checking out, he was charged for the room at regular price that was slightly bigger than what the poker rate allows. He emailed his dissatisfaction, got a call from one of the higher ups, they refunded him his money, I believe for the entire stay, and comped him for two nights. Not sure what upgrade you'd expect already staying at The Hotel. $20 may get you an upgraded view I guess. With the cheaper hotels $20 is enough to get a suite.

Update?
We did slip the guy a 20 and ask for an upgraded room. He gave us a room on a high floor with a great view of the pool and the strip. My buddies who came a day later and didn't ask got a room on the 4th floor with a really crappy view. I don't know if the $20 helped at all, but the room itself wasn't upgraded, just the view. I was OK with it.We had an amazing trip. Three straight nights of debauchery. Twice we ended up at Casino Royal playing $5 blackjack switch until 3 AM and raising a huge ruckus. One night we went downtown and had a blast.Nothing super special to report on the eating front. We did hit Mix one night (love that place), and the breakfast at The Cafe in The Hotel is pretty awesome. They have a lobster/egg thing that is fantastic.I played in a couple small poker tournaments at the RIO (won one of them - only 13 people in it), and hit a few bets (Butler screwed me - had lots of $ on them). Overall it was one of my best Vegas trips due to the sheer amount of fun, drinking, and ridiculousness that ensued.

Anyone with any insight on airfare? Looking at July 18-21st and prices are slowly climbing. They bottomed at 503 and have been now creeping into 540-570 range...which sucks. MEM>LAS.
Airfare Booked... So far 8-9 guys claiming to be IN. 6-7 booked. 2BR suite(s) booked at Palms. This should be interesting... Looking like Ditch Fridays for sure at Palms... Saturday is up in the air:1) Palms again (If guys whine on budget)2) Wet Republic (Dance deck table or pre-sale tix)3) DayLight (MB) (New pool not open yet, gotta look into table/cabana pricing once out)Still hammering through options

What is Ditch Fridays at Palms?
Live DJs, drinks, ####loads of drunk folks, etc. It's far from a premier scene there anymore but we're staying at Palms so it's an easy/cheap way for us to hit a good sized pool party without having to pay crazy covers or pay to rent cabanas and such.

Anyone got any feedback on teh sportsbook in teh Golden Nugget? Size? Smokey? Free Drinks? # of TVs?
I was here for the first weekend of March Madness. Plenty of TVs but it's not a huge room. The book actually smelled more like B.O. than smoke (the March Madness crowd doesn't shower I guess since they get down to the book before 7). It takes $100 bet to get a drink ticket. If you go during a big event you can actually sit in the lounge next door - they turn on all the TVs and have servers there. That's where my group camped out and it was pretty awesome.

Worked for me at Venetian (first room was on a low level, 20 got us a high floor with a really great view)

I was in Bally's and had some Walter Hill Sportsbook tickets to cash, so I strolled down to Ellis Island. Hoofa what a dive. It was about 77 degrees inside, nearly pitch black, full on BO experieice...but damn if the sportsbook wasn't packed.

FYI - Paris is no longer doing the theatre experience for March Madness. They've turned it into the Jersey Boys theatre. Shame, as it was my favorite place to watch games, drink beer, and bet on the games.

Subtitle wiped out. Nobody would have any idea this thread is "A compilation of Vegas recommendations"...

Bring Back The Subtitles!!!

Edit: Found the info, but anyone used Patty lately for shows? Is she still doing the ticket thing?

On another note: highly recommend Margaritaville on the strip. Thought it would be cheesy but the food is actually pretty darn good, strong drinks and a good atmosphere.

Any suggestions for a hotel off the strip that's not exactly a "free for all?" Taking a group of high school soccer players there for a weekend in the fall.

Not sure what you mean by a "Free For All" because that's a forum here. But I stayed at Palms Place off the strip and enjoyed it. Little refrigerators in your room too. :)

This thread is so long and extensive, that's it's not really a list of recommendations as much as it's a review of every single thing in Vegas.

Which room did you get? Studio Suite, 1BR suite, or 2BR Suite (just the first two combined)? Or did they have standard rooms too? That's where we'll be staying as well. How were the facilities overall? What kinda eats options, etc? Pools scene?

I just had the Studio Suite which was still huge and very nice with a great view of the strip.

The pools at Palms Place were quiet. The good pool is obviously at the Palms. It's about a 4-5 minute walk to the Palms though. I didn't mind that. What I did mind was being so damn far off the strip... basically $15-20 cab ride in depending on where you go. I guess if you just went straight to the Bellagio it might be cheaper.

But I enjoyed it. And I liked hanging out at the Palms more than I thought I would. The vibe was good.

:thumbup:Good to hear. Thanks. Yeah the long cab ride from the strip was mentioned repeatedly in reviews. The way I see it is if it's half mile or 3 miles away I'll be taking a cab so it's irrelevant other than the cost. Budgeting 100ish for cab fares (splitting multiple ways) for the trip for just that reason. I'm going in July and I'm not a big fan of sweating my ### off unless it's poolside

What part of July? I think I'll be back on or around the 25th. Staying on the strip this time though.

Will be in town for a bachelor party the 18-21st. Staying at Palms Place. Hanging at Palms Pool Thursday (land at 10am). Dinner at N9NE then out onto the strip Thursday Night. Likely doing Ditch Fridays (did you hit that? how was it?), then considering Encore Beach Club (WYNN) or Wet Republic (MGM) or possibly DayLight (at MB) during the day saturday. Likely Saphhire or Rhino Friday Night. Saturday Night will just be pub/casino crawling around town.
