Your Best Sports Moment of Glory

A time that you were in the action- playing, coaching, ref, whatever.

Baseball- little league as a catcher. It is late in the season and my team was not very good. Our third baseman sucked big time. There was a play with a runner heading to third base and a play being made from a throw from shallow outfield. I backed up the third baseman and of course he bungles the throw but at a bad angle. I go for the ball and the runner heads for home. I grabbed the ball and ran towards the runner but there was no way I could get to him. Just at the last moment, I dive and tag him out just before his foot taps home. I hit the ground and quickly get up to turn and throw the ball to second to get the original hitter out with a perfect throw. I made the all-star team that year.

Basketball. My team was getting beat badly. Our guards were just over matched by leaps and bounds. I have no idea how many steals the other team had. But on one stretch, I inbounded the ball to my guard... before he reached half court the ball was stolen. I was still trailing a bit so I was able to get back on D. The guy with the ball came right at me and went up with a layup. I swatted it clear away heading the other way where one of my teammates grabbed it but quickly lost it from another steal. Again, the other team came right at me as I was the only defender and went up again. And again, I swatted the ball. This time it went to one of their team who challenged me a third time. Once more, I swatted his shot. I grabbed the ball and passed up to a team mate and started to head down to set our offense when once more we lost the ball. This time as they came down it was a 3 on 1 but instead of just coming right at me, he decided to pass... but I intercepted the pass and took it down the court.

My other basketball moment was on our end of the court. I was set up in a low post and got the ball. Made a move and went up. We scored. We were not really in full court press buy my guy was throwing the ball in so I was not in a hurry to get back on D. I realized that the guard was close to me and no paying attention to me to get the ball- so when the pass was made, I nabbed it. Turned quickly and took the shot which I drained. I kinda thought... no way he let's me do that again... but they dang near did the exact same thing and I did the exact same thing again. 6 points and two steals in literally like a 45 second time span.

All Delaware County Pole Vault champ, 1988.

It wasn't that high though, 12'3", just the highest that year at the county championships.

I jumped the school record at 12'6" in practice near the end of the year but couldn't do it in a meet so I never officially set it.

Throwing a 82 yard TD pass on the first play of overtime to win a game in HS or catching Westfield's anchor guy from 1/2 a lap behind in the 4x100 freestyle relay (last event) to win the North Jersey YMCA team championship in 1988 by 1 point.

THere was a parking garage overlooking the field filled with friends and fraternity/sororities partying and cheering. They rushed the field at the final whistle and the party continued all night!

Track: Regional 4x400 champions

Basketball: We were playing a game vs our "rivals" in Junior High. Played most of the game within a few points of eachother. Early in the 3rd, we were down 2. This guy runs his rock hard head right into my nose and breaks it. There was blood everywhere. I go and get cleaned up and start watching the game. This is when we started getting killed. I finally came back into the game at the start of the 4th to a team down 16 points! We won that game sparked by my defense and everyone went nuts.

Won last years Madden tournament in my hometown and got Madden 08 for free.

I took 2nd place in men's jumprope in the 7th grade. Every year about 8 or 10 local parochial schools get together near the end of the school year and they have a competition of all kinds of events. Anything from baseball to track and field, to jumprope. Earned 2 points and a ribbon for jumping about 350 times without missing. Some other nerd got over 400 hundred. But our school took 3rd place and got a trophy by only 1 point over the 4th place school. So I contributed to us getting a trophy. :lmao:

I suck at sports. :nerd:

Little League All Star Baseball tourny in NJ. I was 9-10. Playing 2B.

First pitch of the day, leadoff hitter nailed a liner off our pitcher and I dove and caught it. My last time up, bases loaded, down a run, hit a grounds rule double that ends up winning the game.

It was the first game my father ever went to.

1) An unassisted Triple Play in kickball in 3rd Grade. That's right, #####es.

2) Making "Plays of the Year" for the state of Tennessee for a diving catch in the corner of the endzone.

3) A diving interception on a lateral across the field on a kickoff return, after telling everyone I would do so, following a fake of the same play in the First Half.

My mite team won the Alaska State hockey championship, I had a shutout as goalie and was game MVP. Switched to defense after that and never really had the opportunity to be the hero. Always the unsung hero.

I was in the regional table tennis championship playing for a trip to state (Oklahoma) and everyone was real excited because my school had never gone. Half way through I lose feeling in my arm and can't grip the paddle so I switch to my left hand. I'm way ahead in the match so even though I wasn't doing as well left handed I was still winning. Then I lost all feeling in my left arm as well so I finished the match with the paddle in my teeth with my arms flopping around numb.

Baseball - Playing left field in little league, threw out three consecutive runners at home plate. That was about the extent of my baseball highlights.

Football - Ran for a TD, passed for a TD, returned a punt for a TD and returned a fumble for a TD in one game.

Soccer - Had a streak of 12 consecutive saves on penalty kicks. Okay, so I wasn't the greatest soccer player.

Tennis - Only person to win my league's singles and doubles titles in consecutive years.

Basketball:

In 9th grade, I hit a 15-footer at the buzzer to win the game. :goodposting: The next day, my name was spelled wrong in the statewide paper.

Baseball:

My senior year of high school, I hit a homerun in the last conference game of the season that won the game and gave us the last spot in the state tournament.

I was the tackling dummy for the 1991 Indiana Class 5A State Championship Football Team. We finished the year ranked number one in the nation by ESPN or SI or whoever was doing the national rankings at the time.

However, there was no Rudy moment for me. No Friday Night Lights. I was a junior and never saw the field during a varsity game. Heck, I struggled to get playing time on the JV team. It was still pretty awesome to be a part of that team.

Our ground game is rolling. They can't stop us. First and goal at about the 4. Call is a belly to my side. Hole will be right where my DT is lined up. I come up to the line, look at the guy and say, "Get ready. Ball's coming right at you." He looks at me and I nod as if to say "Oh yes. Right at you." I blow the guy off the line and out the back of the endzone. Of course it's on the game film, me blocking the guy out the back of the endzone and into the triple jump sand pit.

Edit to add result of play. Six points.

Baseball- Doubled a guy off first when he was caught napping, unassisted double play as the first baseman, a couple inside-the-parkers, playing third and shortstop as a lefty.

Football- Throwing and catching some long passes for TDs, couple fumble recoveries and INTs (in an unorganized game).

I left out:4) Playing as an undersized DE in high school. Winning by 6 in the 4th Quarter. They have it 4th and Goal at the 3 with about 1:20 left in the game. They run it at me with a Tennessee Mr. Football Finalist and I stuff him at the Goal Line.

High school hockey tournament - Met a chick outside our hotel. Drank with her and a couple of her friends till 6 am. Team breakfast at 8 which I spent puking in the bathroom after trying to eat a soggy cinnamon bun. Played back-to-back games (started at 9:30) and had 7 points (5g, 2a). Won the tourny later that day with... had the game winning goal.

Winning the freshman championship not sure if it was all of long island or nassau cty, in the 100M dash over some insane competition. Ran the perfect race and beat guys that if never again beat. That earned me the nickname, fastest white kid on long island.

High school football (best and worst mixed together): Our TB routinely led the state in rushing but the FB is just a hammer and hardly ever gets the ball. Third and long and they decide to give me the ball. I roll over a few guys for a first down but refuse to go down as they pile on. Just excited I think and you guys that run the ball know there's a time when you should go down. I didn't and my leg eventually snapped in half from the weight of everyone piling on. Probably better memories are pancaking DEs on 56 blast.

Adult basketball league a few years ago: Furious comeback. Big crowd and I get fouled at the buzzer we are down by one. So court is empty except me on the line. I miss the first and hit the second and we roll them in OT.

High school football coaching: First win as a sophomore head coach was nice (I think we only won one or two games that year). But all the wins are sweet (7-2 the next year and each one was awesome). Watching players you coached play in college is a real thrill.

Little league baseball: First (and I think last time) I caught a pop fly (I only played two years). It was actually a line drive kind of hit and I made what looked like a pretty athletic leaping grab but it was mostly luck.

Some great gym class memories.

Playing shortstop, bottom of the ninth, had to hold the batting team scoreless on the inning to win. Deep drive drops in right, guy on first has his wheels on and is going to try to score. Right fielder finally corrals the ball and throws it to the relay second baseman. I see the catcher is out of position so, Jeter-like, I sprint to home. Second baseman wheels around and throws a bullet to me. I get to the plate the same time the ball, and the runner, gets there. Field the catch, spin around off balance and have a massive collision with the runner that knocks me flat on my back. Kept the ball in my glove, final out, game over.

Another game, got up in the final inning down three with the bases loaded, and smacked the walkoff grand slam to center field. My classmates carried me off the field on their shoulders.

Year or so later, I'd blown a play at second the inning before, so I was still on tilt when I got up to bat and wanted to make up for costing the team a run. So I gave the first pitch I saw a big whack, but ended up popping it up to the first baseman. It was a high one, I ran all the way to first before the ball came down. In fact, I'd already made the turn to second base trying to stretch it out when I passed the first baseman--distracting him enough that he muffed the catch. The ball dropped at his feet, and I was already on the way to a double. The shortstop was as confused as the guy at first, so when he ran over to cover the throw to second, he was off balance. Plus, I was coming at him full speed. The ball sailed right over my shoulder, but hit the heel of the shortstop's upturned glove and rolled up and over his head toward left field. I hadn't even thought about slowing down, I'd already decided to round second and head for third. Left fielder scoops up the errant throw and fires it to third. I turn, see the ball is going to short-hop as I pull up to the bag. I stop for a second and duck--the ball bounces in the dirt six or so feet in front of me and passes about an inch over my back, and the third baseman's view was blocked by my body enough that he fumbles the ball, too. It rolls most of the way to the bench, allowing me to trot in for an inside-the-infield home run (off 3 errors).

Hockey: The only hat trick I had in college was in the only game we played in my home state. I had a bunch of firends/family there, so that was pretty cool. (From that point on, any time I struggled offensively, my coach would ask if he needed to fly my mom into town inorder to get me to show up) :blackdot:

Hockey: All-University Championships of my senior year. I was playing for our Fraternity team, against our rival frateniry for the University Championship. We had lost to the same team in the All-Greek championship, and they had been talking trash all week. I was the last shot in the shoot-out. I told the goalie "I am going top shelf, left side!" I juked, he went down, I shelved it over his left shoulder. I was carried off the rink...and didn't pay for another drink the rest of the week...

Roller Hockey: Playing with a bunch of buddies after college, we won our league, then our region, and played in the National Championships in Vegas...

My favorite hat trick was in the dana cup in Denmark. Scored three vs a German team to win. 2 of them were PKs and the 3rd a breakaway. Oh and i was playing sweeper!!!!! Germans wanted to kill the English ref and he had to be escorted from the fields.

We won the bantam B state tourney in Alaska by beating a strong Anchorage team and making it to the final against the hometown Soldotna team. The night before 6 of us were surrounded by police in a parked car behind the grocery store. We were smoking weed but had just finished and a few had some cigarettes. The police let us go cause we upset the best team and gave the local team a chance to win it all. They didn't. I thought I was going to jail.

I never had any at a level that high.My favorite was in an indoor game against a local HS team that had just gotten 2nd in the state. On my first goal, I tore up my right knee with about 10 minutes left in the half. I sat out the rest of the half. Second half, I went back in with my knee popping every step I took, and scored 2 more. We got crushes, but it was awesome.

Bottom of the 9th in High School baseball, man on third down a run. Decent crowd with a good amount of my friends watching, none of them baseball educated. Pitcher throws a ball in the dirt, I put my hand up to tell the runner at third to stay put. Next pitch I hit a game winning homer which in itself was a great moment. Come to find out my uneducated baseball friends think I called my shot ala the Babe. I never told them anything differently, I am a legend....
